MRE Review: Menu No.1 Ratatouille from XMRE

This is the first look at a civilian MRE from the XMRE company. They can be found at www.xmremeals.com/ . XMRE is a relatively new company, and since the time I received my first MREs from them they have instituted some changes in their products. If I get some new ones this will probably be the only review of one of these original meals. This is a longer video than I'd have liked it to have been, but since it was a first look at a new company's MREs I wanted to do a little comparison with some other commercial MREs and give some more information about the company.

Coincidentally, I just ate Lot 4064 Menu #3 (chicken/egg/noodles) from XMRE while watching this review :P The main dishes change significantly between lots, so you'll want to compare them on XMRE's website (the link to "Lot Number Search" is on the bottom right). They let me customize my order from lots 4056 and lots 4064 to accommodate some allergies. The lot numbers appear to be the date that group was packed on. I actually had the exact same experience with the dates; the MRE I just ate was 4064 (so two weeks before it arrived, despite international shipping), but the oatmeal chocolate cookie was 3085, just like yours. One major difference was that my main dish arrived in the regular box, rather than the sleeve you got. Customs had opened one of the bags (I bet MealKitSupply ships to Canada in clear bags so that customs doesn't need to open the bag), and the creamer had burst inside the accessory pouch. Apart from that, I've got no complaints. Everything was tasty, it was just the right amount of food, the cost (and shipping) was cheap (ten bucks to ship to Canada). Big props to XMRE for customizing my order for me, even though I was just buying a box of six!

Wow, they actually let you customize your order? That's yet ANOTHER cool thing that I'm learning about this company. They're still pretty new, but they've shown that they're very interested in R&D to put out the best possible product and make their customers happy.

Thanks. Good job, as always. If XMRE were up front, they'd call these a TOTM, because the quantity of contents more closely matches those than of a full MRE. I get genuine TOTMs for half the price XMRE asks, so maybe that's why they shy away from the moniker, eh? I'm glad you finally had a ratatouille. It's one of my favorite entrees, even if it is a "veggie" meal. Very tasty and filling. I have long wondered if they take extra care to make the veggie meals taste better to make up for the loss of meat. Maybe, because all the veggie ones I've had so far have been excellent.

If this "new" company is putting cookies from 2012 in their MREs, that tells me they are just buying bulk lots of old and new components and repackaging them under their own name. That's why they don't have any innovative components unique to themselves. Maybe they will grow into that though.

I notice that all of the civilian companies have items that are in packaging similar to the military MRE. Do the companies produce these items and sell them to the private companies? Or is it simply military surplus? I had thought I remember that the government would tend to frown on reselling once they were packed in a military MRE.

I suppose it's nice to have the choice of commercial MREs. But genuine MREs contain more food and are generally cheaper, so I don't see myself ever shelling out for the commercial ones.

I'm trying to find an item that I found in an MRE when I was a kid. This was in the early 90's so it was probably packaged a while before. It was ( I think) a dehydrated of freeze dried fruit bar. It was sweet, crisp, white and almost like fine grain styrofoam. Do you remember anything like that? Can't find it anywhere.

Oh yeah, I'm guessing you're talking about the freeze-dried fruit that they used to put in the MREs. I remember strawberries, peaches and a mixed fruit mix. They recommended reconstituting them with water, but I always thought they were better (and less messy too) right out of the pouch. If you look through my videos I posted one (in two parts) last year comparing a 1986 MRE to one from 2007. The 1986 one had a fruit mix that I tried out.

I've found that the MRE spoons are actually dishwasher safe so you can wash them and re-use them for other meals. I just wish that MRE makers would package knives and forks so that us poor folk can have a complete set of silverware. Oh and when will the manufacturers ever make a Oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookie.

They are 100kr and wont come with a heater but you can buy heaters from naturkompaniet for 15kr and its the ones that the british army uses too! But its worldwide shipping at XMRE so you shold try them. Yea garderoben Also has airsoft, camo clothing tactical gear and knives so on and its in Stockholm Tegnérgatan 20

What happens if you overfill the FRH?

A little bit extra shouldn't be a big problem (I actually put a bit too much in this one myself), but if there's way too much water the FRH will simply not work--or at least not work very well. You could say that it douses the FRH. It's interesting that it NEEDS water to work, but too much water will keep it from working.

And do you suppose to transport that? It will be either wide (if the tray is unfolded) or thick (if the tray is folded). Would be quite impractical to carry it around when your main concern is to reduce your addon weight to cover more distance!
