Risking a trip to the emergency room seemed "interesting"! Since I couldn't finish the first one it seemed like a natural personal "challenge" to try to get this one down. Was it worth it? Hmm...

Your advice at the start of the video is very valuable to the newbie. As an old salt, I purchase my MRE's from only three companies who are online. All of the meals are within a year old mfg date wise. I constantly inquire storage temperature at the seller. And only buy them fall, winter and spring as the shipper cannot control the transportation temperature of their packages. Summer temps can go way above 100 degrees F in the trailers during transport. Excellent review!

+Admiral Preparedness Thanks Admiral! You know, I never even thought about the fact that the simple act of shipping MREs during the summer would effect their shelf life, but that's absolutely true. I mean, hopefully they wouldn't be in extreme heat for very long (a few days at most hopefully), but still. If they were otherwise strictly stored in a nice cool environment that little "uncontrolled" time would potentially shorten their life if you want to keep them for long-term storage. Good point.

Hey gshultz, your videos are great! I just thought I'd suggest that you would benefit from using a pop filter. You can buy one fairly cheap, or even make one for free using an old pair of tights (or pantyhose in the states?) and a metal coat hanger.

Ocean State Job lot sold "MREs" (same ones I'm willing to bet) maybe 4 years ago for $2.50 each. It was the entree from Sopaco or Ameriqual (spelling?) that was just out of date or immanently expiring, a gatorade type drink powder from an asian country, a generic snack like pretzels and some dried fruit/nut mix with a condiment pack that had tea, coffee, sugar, wet nap, salt etc.., but no FRH, or breads, cookies,pouches of fruit, shakes/flavored coffee mixes.... i.e the good stuff. They also sold the sopaco/ameriqual entrees loose (in the brown paper boxes) for a buck. As I recall (don't quote me!) the meals sold at that time were the omelette, chicken chow mein, chicken a la king, sausage gravy, hamburger or meatloaf, and a vegetable/beef stew. For $2.50 for weekend camping, or the odd winter emergency it was fine, but certainly not a very good and balanced meal for a soldier or someone who would depend upon it for total nutrition. I'm betting that this person bought cases at a further discount then realized that they would be of no real value to a person who is buying these things to actually survive on and werent going to be able to get much more than the $2-2.50 they invested.

Samidella idella Thanks for the information Samidella. I remember around 10-12 years ago that Ocean State Job Lot was selling loose entrees and sides like you mentioned. They must get an occasional deal on large amounts of the stuff and sell it whenever they have it. I hadn't seen them selling complete no-name commercial MREs though (but I also don't get to Ocean State Job Lots very often). It doesn't surprise me that they'd have ones similar to this one, but I wonder whether they package their own meals with loose components that they have on hand, or if they bought them already packaged. Perhaps they had a closeout special when 5ive Star Gear stopped producing/selling their MREs? Would be interesting to find out.

Elizabeth Shaw I love to shop at Ocean State Job Lot, you never know what you're gonna find and you better grab it because tomorrow it might be gone, never to be seen again. Assuming you are from MA or RI, do you remember Building 19? Or Spags in White City (Worcester)? Those were also full of unique finds and bargains. Be happy that you didn't get the veggie omelet-the one time it paid to not get there in time. LOL. Happy Holidays.

But there have been some recent ones that seem to be upping the taste level. I REALLY liked the Pulled Beef in BBQ Sauce one I had recently.

I bought a case of those "no-name" MREs many years ago. They were disappointing to say the very least. For those who have never had one, however, I can state categorically that genuine MREs of the last few years have been remarkably good. I had a chicken pesto pasta yesterday and a spaghetti with beef today. Both were excellent.

And I agree that the constant reviewing/improving of MREs over the years has really led to a much superior tasting product than stuff from 10 or 20 years ago!

What it seems is that the seller had opened genuine MRE's, took out a dish and SOME components, and packed it. The remaining components from the pack are pry spread through other MREs like this he is selling. Since you can acquire JUST the meal super cheap at bulk places, especially older ones - one or two genuine MREs components can be spread along with several different main dishes and boom you made like 5 MREs for the price of maybe 2-3 and sell them as 5. So - instant profit. It's a little shady, but I have seen similar things with repacked stuff before how they shift stuff out to spread to others. So ya get the regular price for the one missing stuff, take another solo item, toss stuff in and make 3 times what the solo item costs by stuffing in stuff you took from other packages.

Technically it is newer... barely, but it is newer, Yeah they need to label food as "fresh" instead of "new", new never used means shit when we are talking about something that can rot, ie "Check out my brand new 10 year old chicken nuggets, never eaten".... actually considering all the preservatives, it will still look good, but you probably shouldn't put it in your mouth, yes I am looking at you.

crimsoneyes419 Yes. They're kind of an "intense" food--with all the added nutrients designed for active soldiers and the fact that they're made to last for years can serve to mess up your insides if you're not ready for it. They can easily "stop you up"...or do the opposite!
