Good for including your little one. I did with mine too when she was that age. She's a marine now. My two boys are 11 and 12. We actually got a vacuum sealer and we make our own "MRE's" for our fishing hunting and camping trips. It's a lot of fun for them to figure out foods that will remain stable and they learn about nutrients and good choices for consistent energy. Plus they have a lot of fun making them. I've been watching for Menu #2 myself. No luck yet, but maybe soon! I've learned a trick with the FRH. When I do two items, I don't put them inside the FRH, but sandwich the FRH between them, the whole thing nestled in the sleeve/box and then even wrapped in a towel. The FRH gets much hotter with the cells equally wet, as you discovered. It stays hot enough to heat the coffee after you take the food items out. Try it.

You woulda thought if they opened to check it, they'd be checkin out the FRH cause it can be activated with water so may be hazordous in their eyes. However, the beans? Maybe one of the inspectors was hungry, tried to take them, got caught and had to put them back lol you never know with stuff like that. Also, a bit amazed there is a beef MRE being a popular menu for 2014, seeing as beef prices have skyrocketed past few years at least here in the States. Must be a rather expensive one for them to produce compared to others. As for the pretzels and cheese spread, pretzels with jalapeno cheese to dip in is an amazing snack. I've had it myself before, or something rather similar. Pretty nice, and nice review man. Also, I hate those new "sleeves". They annoy me lol I like the boxes better to put the food in to heat.

Necrodius Ironically, by cutting into the exterior bag they actually made it unsafe for flight. I understand that U.S. MRE FRH's can be taken on commercial airliners as long as they're contained within the sealed outer bag. Some other ration suppliers get around this by not having the salt in the pouches, thus requiring a separate pouch of saltwater to activate. I really loved that this one came with tortillas, it would have been perfect with one more pack as there was a lot to filling. Totally agree with you on the sleeves too!

Jaybird196 It was a BBQ lovers dream, but yes - replacing the BBQ sauce with Hot sauce would have been perfect. I enjoyed this one so much I didn't even notice the lack of dessert at the time. It was only when someone pointed it out in the comments. This may be the first U.S. MRE I've come across without something outwardly sweet in it.

+BornFancy Why? What about those who hate or can't stand certain foods/ingredients of which may taste too overwhelming to some? Some kids have hyper sensitive or strong bitter taste receptors. Do you think kids are being difficult in choosing what they want to eat or are the parents are the ones being difficult in forcing their kids to eat more of a certain thing that they can't stomach. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying parents just let kids eat fast/fried foods as they wish but let them have a a say in what meat and veggie dish to eat. People have the right to choose. Of course choose reasonably.

+Onward 123 a child offered a wide variety of foods with encouragement or seeing that someone else likes them is more apt to eat like crystal does and like I did as a child. And picky people bug the crap out of me because it's not about hating a certain food or two it's about only eating a certain food or two and they will never venture outside of their comfort zone not even to something like asparagus. I was a chef a well trained European worked chef and it drives me crazy to work hard and making a delicious meal and someone eats two things on the plate. picky is far different as I said than just hating a few foods.

There is a "chicken breast filet" one that you crush up in mayonnaise. Actually makes a delicious chicken salad. Regular MRE chicken breast doesn't sound all too great though.

+Duana mason Yes MREs are delicious but they aren't good for your body whatsoever. They were just designed to give a soldier energy to stay in the fight. But I'm going to back-up Zivion's claim... we really don't eat better than most people. When we are deployed we rarely get MREs. We usually get this terribly cooked tray of shit. Back in the US, we get chow hall food (if you aren't married), and even that is low grade. If you're looking for validity, I'm a Cpl in the USMC. Been in 3 years and counting.

No lol. Sorry about that, let me clarify. When you are of single status, you are given a meal card which has a number on it. That number coordinates to your BAS balance (basic allowance for substance). Every time you sign the sheet at the chow hall, it is taken out of your BAS. However, when you become married, they revoke your meal card since you will be receiving BAS in addition to your regular paycheck to pay for groceries. You are still able to eat at the chow hall for a small fee if you wish, but you must pay that out of pocket. Hope that clears up any questions you may have had regarding my post. :)

Kiwi Dude Not too bad all in all. The entrees with rice in them are not as good though. The rice doesn't seem to be holding together and turns into a mealy mess. The pound cake and grape drink are still delicious though! I thankfully didn't need my emergency food so I am eating them before the new stuff gets here. Watching your videos inspires me to dig them out and search for the goodies.
