Believe it or not, the Creamy Spinach Fettuccine IS actually much better cold/room temp. It somehow has more flavor and a better texture. Heat turns it into a flavorless glop, true. It was one of my preferred MREs in the Army, although I remember it had peanut M&Ms added before 2019.
@mysock351C Жыл бұрын
Its actually decent either way, but only when fresh. I have a few of them. BUT, I did notice that they are not so nice after awhile. Ate another one that was about three years old a few weeks ago and it was not nearly as good. Had an odd chemical mush flavor. I think this one and the MRE Pizza are two menus that don't age well. The pizza turns into something kids would make out of brown and red Play-Doh, and that's about how it tastes. Like you literally ate the pretend pizza when they said "wanna try?" Salty and weird.

It could have been good, but institutions rarely ever get anything right. If they weren't complete idiots, I would think that the spinach could be dry freezed and turned into delicious crunchy sheets, similar to the seaweed snacks from Trader Joes. As for the alfredo-- I'm pretty sure I recall an MRE that did that and didn't suck, so they know how to do that. I think it's the spinach they have no business trying to prepare. It's a delicate leaf. Overcooking it ruins everything good about it.
@Raskolnikov704 жыл бұрын
The folks at Natick have traditions to uphold. A case of MRE's wouldn't be the same if it didn't have at least one menu that didn't inspire swearing when handed to a soldier.

An MRE one may want to socially distance themselves from? When the crackers and snack have to come to the rescue of the main, you know it’s pretty bad.
@Raskolnikov704 жыл бұрын
It broke my heart to hear they reduced the portion size of the cheese and peanut butter packs though. After eating MRE's for 30+ years you learn the technique for making the spread pouch last exactly as long as the crackers, so that the last bit of cheese or whatever goes on the last chunk of cracker before you pop it in your mouth. 1 oz. pouches feel like a betrayal of everything that makes America great.

I love the advertising on the main packaging: "Warfighter Recommended, Warfighter Tested, Warfighter Approved". As if that convinces anyone that this is actually a hearty meal. That main course really does look terrible. Still I believe it should not be too difficult to make a hearty vegetarian meal that can satisfy even habitual meat eaters. I'm thinking about something with beans (for protein), potatoes (for carbohydrates), some green vegetables and a good mix of spices etc. for flavour.
