Enjoy it but don't let it stop you enjoying modern music either because this was modern music when it was released and was criticised as not being as good as what came before it. Aneka was criticised by some of her fans at the time as she had earned a name as a folk singer and the considered her a sell out for doing this. Is this sounding familiar? I was obsessed with this song when I was 7 I even had a lip sync routine to it, I still like it.

Buenas noches.

Never knew this is the original. There's a german version sung by Andrea Jürgens, who was a popular teenage singer back then. Why am I telling you this? Cause they changed the story of the song completely. In Andrea's version she sings about a young man who came to Germany to live and work there but he feels lonely because besides Japanese he only knows English which in turn only few people spoke in Germany at that time. The singer then befriends the ominous "japanese boy" and assures him, that everything will be allright over time. Very interesting piece of Zeitgeist, regarding the topic of the "Gastarbeiter" (guest/migrant workers), which was a big deal in split up Germany after WWII and had a lot of societal impact in the generations to follow. Thanks for uploading this, it now gave me another perspective on it👍🏻

In many countries back then you were supposed to sit quietly during musical performances the same as you would at the cinema or theatre. It wasn't until the late 1980s here in Ukraine that you start to see the crowds go crazy. It's not that they don't like the music, it was just a different social standard the same way you wouldn't clap or make noise in the middle of a movie you like today.

The syndrum gives it away as late 70s or very early 80s. Syndrums got replaced by Linn drum machines and the Roland TR series from 1981 on

It definitely was not before it's time. This sounds like something from the late 1970s. IDK how anyone could confuse this with a mid 80s song at all lmao.

I grew up with this song as a kid and I still think it is great. TBH, though, and as a now adult seeing the video again, her love probably decided that her wearing a bad kimono and chopsticks in a wig was a little embarrassing at social events so he called it all off and he's in a far happier place.
