The worst part is it's clear that he was scared. Imagine it from his perspective....he thinks he's a good guy, that his gods will save him, but hears of their destruction and realizes his powers are gone, and as much as he wants to not believe it, there's clearly a part of him that considers the possibility. He may even be thinking that if his gods are still alive, maybe they stopped talking to him because he failed and he was an outcast, which makes hearing the going to hell part even more frightening for him.

This why I love the Ori as Villians in Stargate they give the Tau'ri(Humans of Earth) a real challenge not just in lower Plane combat standards by also as an Ideology opponent as well. In order to defeat the Ori the Tau'ri needed to defeat their armies but as well to remove the Ori Ideology or at least have moderates within the Ori that want to follow the book of Origin and spread it peacefully and without extreme violence unlike their Corrupt and Power hunger Priors that are willing to spread the message of the Book of Origin through extreme violence and without any compromise.

Defeating an army might not be so hard but stamping out an ideology or religion is near impossible. Let's not forget that while the Ori had been corrupted, and were a massive threat, what SG-1 did was still technically genocide when they wiped them out then went after their followers. And the ancients allowed this because _they_ were finally at risk, which hints that while they are much better than the Ori, they might not be so noble as they think

I would guess that it is either a deliberate design choice by the Ori (maybe to remind them that they are not as worthy as the Ori so they have to sacrifice something for it) or it may be a side effect of the artificial advancement similar to what we saw with Nirties advanced humans so healing it may be impossible without also losing his powers.

The fact that the prior retain their powers afterwards means that either, their powers were probably granted, but not dependent on the Ori after that, or that the Ori were in fact not dead. Adria ( main villian of the ori arc) confirms it when she meets SG-1 later on. The weapon worked because it targeted whatever energy or what have you the ori were made up of and broke them up. Also the ancients prevent them from interfering in sg1 Galaxy during the war. But they could still do whatever they wanted in thier own Galaxy

The Ori were always so annoying, they just seemed like a campy re-skin of the Goa'uld with higher power-levels.
