You may be wondering why Americans have an obsession with peanut butter, and more generally, peanuts. Crop rotation was critical to cotton yields in the southern US during the 1800s, peanuts being the most effective nitrogen fixer to improve the soil for this climate. Surpluses of peanuts were initially used as livestock feed, but many people grew fond of them, and became it's own industry. See the developments of George Washington Carver. ( not the inventor of peanut butter, by the way )

I planted some peanuts in my flower bed. What the squirrels didn't steal(ok with me) My son-in -law pulled up while we were out of town. We came back and he's llike "I redid your flower bed, did you know you had peanuts growing in there". I said yes, didn't have the heart to tell him I planted them there, it was a flower bed any way. He was pleased with his work, it did look nice. The rose bush he bought is beautiful every year with tons of roses.

Oh, Henry's are different in the US. Just chocolate covered nougat and peanuts. The Canadian version seems to be what we call Take 5 in the US.

Mr H, It's such fun seeing the joy on your face as you try all those candy bars. Yes, the bar is high with the original Reese's peanut butter cups. I have to admit I haven't tried the chocolate bars you received but that could be due to being in the US and not Canada. Just an FYI, Reese's peanut butter cups are made by Hershey, which is based in the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania. I used to work (and live in the town) and yes it smells like chocolate when you go outside (at least it did when I was there many years ago).

Um I absolutely abhor reeses. You see, I have a very terrible sugar scale, so it is very easy for me to become bed-reddien sick after 3 or 5 reeses. I know, it's terrible I can't enjoy it, but I am honestly glad to be different. Other candies don't affect me like reeses for some reason, and yes I do love peanut butter and chocolate. Hilarious..You are a British anomaly the way you like peanut butter! My old Dad would actually put PB on vanilla ice cream...tastes almost like butterscotch. As children we would put a dollop of PB on our cold cereal, Grape Nuts, Cheerios, Corn Flakes, etc. There's also "Ants on a Log" where you smear PB (or cream cheese) down the cavity in a stalk of celery, then sprinkle on some raisins (ants) and munch away..sweet and salty. Even though PB is loved throughout the USA, the South seems to attach a Deity level of reverence to the snack spread!!! hahaha

I actually find that when I'm having some chocolate that I prefer to drink a soda with it (I prefer Diet Coke). That "burn" you get from drinking that after having the chocolate really does it for me. I especially prefer a dark chocolate and just letting it melt in my mouth. One of my guilty pleasures.

I live about 10 minutes from Hershey and the Reese's factory. (Reese's are now made in several locations, but Hershey is its original home.) I was lucky enough to get a tour of the factory and taste the fresh peanut butter as it was being extruded for the peanut butter cups. It was amazing, what we get in the stores can't even compare. Employees are allowed to eat all the candy they want while they're working, but getting caught taking it out is cause for dismissal. Employees also get boxes of candy or two tickets to Hersheypark with every paycheck.

My favorite peanut butter type candy bar is a Whatchamacallit. It’s the best candy ever!! It disappeared for years and then they brought it back to stay and it’s the only milk chocolate candy bar I’ll eat. I tend to eat just plain dark chocolate now since it’s healthier. Another candy bar I used to love in high school back in the late 80s early 90s was called PB Max, I was so pissed when they discontinued it.

The Frankencup is supposed to resemble Frankenstein's head. The green is his face and the regular chocolate top is the hair. You can see it on the side of the cup. I guess you can say his head is flattened down. 😆

the ultimate peanut butter is definitely not white chocolate, we have those too though - the ultimate peanut butter cup is peanut butter in a peanut butter creme shell. If there's any white chocolate involved, it's been blended with peanut butter.

The reason that the Oh Henry tasted better as you chewed is because it warmed from fridge temperature. Cold reduces flavor, and as it warmed the ingredients released more flavor. The candy will taste better at room temperature (70F, US) than it will while chilled.

Before stopping my addiction to Reese Cups I was so picky about them I would only eat the ones that were sold in a 6 pack of 2 in each wrapper, then I would also know the difference if they are fresh or not because when they are fresh the chocolate when either bitten into or using your fingers has a snap and if not fresh they just smoosh and it’s not the same great taste. But, if your going to eat these wonderful high caloric treats it’s best to try to find in the 6 packs and hope they are fresh because theirs Nothing like a fresh regular Reese’s cup it makes a world of difference.

The reason the Oh Henry! got tastier as you chewed it is that it was warming up. Cold inhibits flavor. That's why one should allow cheese (and candy) to warm to room temperature (or at least 15c) before eating.

Gotta say, Reece's cups are my favorite too, but when I was a kid and had better teeth I was quite fond of butterfingers. I really like a good Reece's Blizzard from Dairy Queen too. Don't think you all have Dairy Queen over on that side of the pond, I suspect her majesty might take offense(j/k), but it's vanilla soft serve ice cream with Reece's cups chopped and blended. Can only manage a small one, cause I'm not much for sweet rich stuff, but man it's tasty.
