I don’t think we should take away from what Ridley contributed to the first Alien film either. Obviously the incredible cinematography and direction is squarely on him, and he was adamant about using Giger’s Xeno design. (At Dan O’bannon’s request) But yes, Dan O’Bannon deserves equal credit.

Well that's not the problem and was discussed in this video. Of course he did an amazing job on his side but... The problem is that he relentlessly took credits over most people deeply implicated in the project. Also that he's becoming senile, and he's over-inflating his ego. It's really bad coming 50 years later and saying- You know what??? I DID ALIEN. Alone. It was my ideas all along. Wtf Ridley??

Damon Lindelof ruined the original script with his rewrites from what I have gleaned from various articles and behind the scenes videos. The scriptwriter that JJ Abrams brought in to write the Lost TV series and was an uncredited script editor on Star Trek Into Darkness (a.k.a. The Reverse of Khan) and The Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise. He's Kurtzman's buddy boy as well, so you can see why Prometheus was so bad.

Scott bought him to rewrite the script and then decided to mainly go with DL so its still on him, think the ideal script is somewhere in the middle as original was good but a bit by the numbers. aliens ended open to a sequel. however I don't think alien 3 was the proper sequel. Ripley would have ran a bio scan of the shuttle after what they had all survived. the mother alien didn't have time to make another egg laying pouch or anything. so a random facehugger on board while they were in cryo, is unlikely, unless of course Weyland intercepted the shuttle first and put one on board.

Although 20th Century Fox were skeptical about the idea, they agreed to finance the development of the story, but asked that Hill and Giler attempt to get Ridley Scott, director of Alien, to make Alien 3. They also asked that the two films be shot back to back to lessen the production costs. Who would've thought that we would have one of the most iconic scariest monsters to ever be seen on the silver screen when we saw the beach ball with the clawed feet, whilst we watched the comedy Sci-Fi film Dark Star. It was Dan O'Bannon who took his idea further and with collaborations with others and his vision. Alien was created. It was pure genius to ask H. R. Giger to design the creature that shocked and scared us all so much. Ridley did an absolutely brilliant job with his cinematography. It was excellent. But he screwed things up big time with Prometheus and Covenant. If he had gone down the road of telling the story of how Weyland Yutani had known about the crashed ship on LV426 and the presence of the alien species in the first place and added more as to why Ash replaced the Nostromo's science officer at the last minute. That would've, in my view, been a better road to take on the prequels. I remember seeing an interview with Scott just after he had finished Covenant and he was saying in a very cock sure way that in around 14 months or just over he would be shining our screens with the 3rd installment of his planned trilogy of prequels. But because it bombed that bad at the cinema, he didn't get green lit for the 3rd film. I'm so glad as it was getting so silly and away from the whole essence of the Alien films by saying that the aliens were created by David. Which was not mentioned in any of the sequel movies. I found Ridley on the interview to be very big headed and arrogant. Which came back and bit him in his backside.

Alien was absolutely awesome at the cinema in 1979, nothing like it had been released before, they nailed the realism. Cameron stripped away all of the realism and horror and turned into an american action film. Not my cup I'm afraid.

Aside from the action, set pieces and so on, Aliens was a masterclass in character development. There were a lot of characters in that film, and a few interesting story arcs. The writer made us care about everyone that died. They weren't just cannon fodder, they were real people. That takes skill. Aliens, and The Thing, (and of course Alien), are great examples of how to write characters, so that you care about them.

@@TheSAFEone09 I only call Aliens a b-movie because that is what it was/is,, a low budget cash-in. Cameron came from the Roger Corman camp and clearly made Aliens better than anyone expected but it is still a low budget film. According to rumours from the scriptwriters, alien tv series will be as follows: It takes places just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship is shipping ore.Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years, when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs. One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen, and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then a war breaks out.All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship. Then they nuke the planet from orbit. Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins. They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship. But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing. Then Weyland-Yutani get's a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there. They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born. Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life. They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life. After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs, they drops them on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die. Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives prolongued life. But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the population out, pursue them and manages to get the elixir back, but gets trapped on the planet where both parties crash. Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life for thousands of years, but they are now trapped on the planet, with no means to get anywhere. But then they see a light aproaching, but is the spaceship friends or foes ?

Prometheus is a fine movie even with its issues, my only gripe is it would've been better to tell a story about the Engineers rather than our creation. I understand what you're saying but don't completely agree. The other director's approached about the film before Scott seem to have had some strange ideas about how to handle the material or found it offputting. Only he had the nerve to make it a slow-burning arthouse horror with no big names or happy ending. His background meant he worked in simpatico with the other gifted artists involved. He also had such a hands-on approach he truly was the author of some of it's most memorable sequences. I've rarely seen a horror film (if ever) in which the character's look as genuinely scared or agitated as they do in this one. This was due to things like them not being fully aware of how the chestbusting scene would unfold & Scott going out of his way to encourage tension between the actors.

While RS certainly didn't "Create" the Alien franchise, without him at that time, I don't think we would've had Giger involved, and THAT was THE reason that movie became what it became. Without RS battling for Giger, the execs did think his art and ideas were obscene. As well, his vision and ideas really were important. I think it's too bad that over time his vision has CHANGED, but, in the beginning, we shouldn't discount what he did. And of course, O'bannon and Giler and the Brandywine folks really rewrote the script, but, Ridley's sense of style back then was INCREDIBLY important for that film. Whether he was brought in at the last moment or not, he was a huge reason that film was as great as it was. I would've LOVED to see what he did with "Aliens"---a film that I have grown to dislike more and more over the years due to its lack of horror----but, oh well... There is NO DOUBT that story for Alien: Covenant was Forced on him by the execs due to the backlash from Prometheus. I quite liked most of the path we were on with Prometheus---save Guy Pearce's HORRIFIC makeup job---but A:C is where it went completely off the rails.
