A couple of suggestions: the magnet wire you are using is too thick. You will end up with a low impedance coil. Standard high impedance guitar pickups generally use between 42 to 44 AWG size wire. And the other suggestion is to be able to enter AWG wire gauge numbers into the winder. None of the major pickup makers use metric size wire. AWG is the industry standard. Nicely made winder. For a typical humbucker you want at least 5,000 turns of 42 AWG wire on each bobbin. Hot overwound pickups can have up to about 10,000 turns of 43 to 45 AWG. A P-90 is 10,000 turns of 42 AWG.

This is a really cool build and there is some serious engineering here, at least in the pickup winding community. But, there is some major issues here, for of all, a Stepper motor is not optimal in this type of application, because in general a stepper with this attachment to it could possible at maximum do 3-400rpm which mean this will takes for ever, also the AWG wire that is used in pickups will not work in that construction without re--design some parts of the construction. What is more interesting is the software, it could be used for this type of application I think :D

The author uses the MultiStepper class of the AccelStepper library, which does not support a smooth increase in speed and a smooth stop of the stepper motor. For this reason, when winding the coil with wires AWG 42, 43, 44 (which should be used in pickup coils), these wires will simply break.

Which class / library would support smooth start and stop in place of MultiStepper?
@AlexandruCalinColodiuc Жыл бұрын
@@xdiscxnnectbeats AccelStepper, I am currently modifying the code and maybe do a build video for the winder, lots of trial and error, it easily breaks AWG 42 wires in this stage.

the look of the machine is ok as described i made this machine i ordered a board and assembled i uploaded the code given in the description to the nextion and arduino display but something with this arduino code is wrong after uploading and starting the machine strange things happen after changing the #deine MICROSTEP 16 code parameter on MICROSTEP 15 or 18 everything works quite well the problem is that the selected coil width cannot be obtained, there is only one parameter about 8mm and the wire thickness cannot be entered e.g. 0.05 only 0.1 maybe someone has a solution to this problem

I wonder if you could vary the rotation rate to keep the wire feed rate constant. Great project!

There’s probably no reason to do that. As the bobbin fills up the relative rotation changes.

I'd love more info about this, especially the software aspect... I'd like to be able to choose "patterns" of how the wire goes back and forth. Also... why does it have a thickness? if choosing number of turns? Looks like what I'm after for sure, just wondering how hard is it to modify the software. In addition to patterns, I'd love to be able to enter in wire gauge, bobbin size and desired output and have it calculate the number of turns.
@DavidRavenMoon2 жыл бұрын
Thickness is the wire gauge. It should be in AWG (American Wire Gauge). That’s the standard used. 42 AWG is typical for the majority of pickups. I’m not sure why he has the size setting unless it has to do with the traverse. Winding patterns is pretty much a myth. When you hand wind you have a totally random pattern. No two hand wound pickups are alike. Yet if you wind three Strat pickups to 9,000 turns of 42 AWG they will all sound the same. If winding patterns mattered at audio frequencies you’d hear it.

I tried to recreate your project. It works too. However, it seems to me as if the motor, which does the constant winding work, stutters a bit (runs unevenly) and the second one, which takes over the wire guidance, travels a lot too far (about 34mm, with a set 8 mm coil width). Trapezoidal spindle is TR8 with 8mm pitch (4-start). Jumper settings for the A4988. Step / 1 all set - Step / 2 all set. What's wrong with me? Or was the sketch for the Arduino nano or the HMI changed compared to what you can download. Most AWG enamelled copper wires are less than 0.1mm thick, usually with 3 decimal places and the stop button in the .hmi does not work either. It would be nice if you could update the corrected scetch and hmi files.

Several questions: 1. How do you ensure that the spool is turned to deliver the wire? I guess it isn't? Then, more importantly, how does the pickup sound with super fat wire and only 300 turns?
@karstenhammerhansen2 жыл бұрын
I think it's just a demonstration of consept, the bobbin also seems a bit oversized
@GitaraMaker2 жыл бұрын
That's also my observation, with 40 to 43awg copper wire it might snap. I tried this multiple times on my diy winder holding the wire with only my fingers and I rarely finish a pickup without snapping it midway. Feeling it by hand, I guess is still the best way to wind a pickup, I hope there's a solution to replicate it on arduino machine.
@TimothyTucker02 жыл бұрын
@@GitaraMaker I have actually wound a couple of pickups since watching this video and I have to position the spool sitting on one of its sides so that the wire can freely unwrap. I also hand tension it and I make sure the bobbin has some give using Teflon tape and isn't fully secured to the shaft. It actually seems quite complex to make a usable production quality machine.
@DavidRavenMoon2 жыл бұрын
The spool doesn’t turn. It’s too heavy and the wire is too thin. It would break. Generally you feed off the top of the spool. The spool can be on the floor in front of the winder, or as seen in commercial winders the spool sits behind the winder, often in a plastic tube (like a bucket) with the wire spooling off the top and usually through a wire guide. So you just need to sit the spool on one end and let the wire spool off the top. My spools (often big 5 lb spools) sit on an upside down plastic bucket on the floor right in front of my workbench with the winder on it.

As someone else already said, that wire was much too large. You should use 42 to 44 AWG wire and to get a coil resistance of about 7 kOhms, it would take about 4200 feet of wire. Also, most players don't like uniformly-wound coils; they prefer scatter-wound coils. Nice job otherwise..
@raleighburns37683 жыл бұрын
Nice clean project but far too slow to wind any single coils. You need 7400 turns.... that would take forever. Is there a mod for a faster RPM option ?
@absolutely_senna3 жыл бұрын
You need it faster?! For me it’s to much fast!! Anyway I think it rotates at 200rpm/min so for 7400 turns you’d need 37 minutes..not so bad!

The project looks good, too bad it doesn't work. What we are presented with is a demonstration of how it should work. A certain variable is taken into account: the number of turns. The rest are mandatory but are ignored. However, the program does not start without them. Only that. In fact at the end of the program it says that you will probably have to experiment with the variables. A comment would be helpful. A B C ...? Anyway it's an opportunity to learn Arduino programming.
