I met one of the shadow cats in a server the other night. They were really chill, just kind of floated around/walked through the ocean and sat and watched me and a group of people fish. They sat on one of the rocks in the ocean and waved at me at one point. They had no name and would occasionally try to say something only for an empty chat box to appear. The server gave them the title of spooky cat friend and treated them like our little cryptid buddy.

In versions 1.08 and prior, grincher was indeed capable of using an in-game exploit to do stuff like delete your fishing rod and mail you so many items that your game crashed. However, in v1.09 (and farther in v1.10), the ability to do so was patched, so now he just makes a billion lobbies to flood the server browser so people can't join each other.

gamedev here (not webfishing nor lamedeveloper) and also hacker. The patch notes are correct to a point, and it's something that most of the people in the video are not understanding: When they are quickly joining then leaving a server, what they are doing is creating a list of IP addresses. What this tells me, is that they have another trick up their sleeve... they likely have a way for RCE through the game, but are sitting on that zero day until they map out as many valid targets as possible. Then one day, you'll either be playing (likely at a peak time) and then you'll get either a ransomware or zombied into a a botnet. The worrying thing is that hackers have the ability to do anything,.... at all... in the game. (and with my game dev/software engineer hat on) it's lazy and cruddy craftsmanship. /spit. Glad they are patching things, but I can smell the rot from here and I haven't even played this one yet.

Not sure if it is one of the hackers covered, but when I first got the game and joined a public lobby I was spooked by what people called 'god'. Assuming it was a modder having some good fun, someone with no name joined and wasn't in spawn. People were talking about him and when I said "wait who's the god" an all void black dog with antlers emerged from the pond in front of me until I went "WHAT" and sunk back into the water. Spooked me good! Seemed harmless enough but I got a photo and I'm so glad I did.

Me and my friend encountered a player named "Ao Oni" that entered our code-only game. It was a massive blue avatar that chased me around for a while before going fishing for a bit and vanishing.

I've actually spoke with Grincher (we have a fanclub discord that he's actually in lol). So the way he's able to join everyone's servers is via a script. He's not actually there. He's also got the ability to "steal" your server code in order to redirect other users to servers such as, recently, "Grincher's Evil Room". He's also able to get around the ban/kick function too, somehow. So far, we've got over 300 members in the discord who have actively been in Grincher lobbies, interacting with the guy and no one has had any issues other than mild frustration (or obsession with some members, and their art lmao) in regards to him stealing lobby codes. No reports of saves getting bricked, at least none with any proof. I honestly think it's for attention, and messing with streamers. Speaking with the guy firsthand, it doesn't seem like he has any real malicious intent, just wanting to be this omnipresent mysterious being lmao EDIT: That being said, if you have real proof of your fishing rod getting deleted, please reply lol EDIT 2: I wrote that all out as the video was playing, so you kinda just said everything I just did xD oops

With the Grincher thing, I do want to add that there can be numerous players 'posing' as Grincher just to scare people; Webfishing uses native Steam usernames. It's still better to be safe than sorry with sus lobbies, but a 'Grincher' sighting may very well be just someone changing their steam name as a joke. I suppose the only way to tell is if the host can kick them or not.

Something worth mentioning since I have not seen it. Since the bug patch Grinchers main exploits are patched however he code guesses/ joins via godot console (bit unsure) anyway hes unbootable and he infects the lobby making it redirect anyone joining to his lobby instead which he then grabs their ip since servers are Peer To Peer. Currently he's nothing more than some guy looking for attention and it shows as he spends up to 8 hours messing with people.

I have experience with both grincher and fmann. Me and my friend had just got the game like a night or two ago, and we were playing just fishing and watching a movie and we had had nobody join in our lobby (it was public) until we saw grincher load in. My friend said he "saw" grincher at spawn, and then they left moments after joining. Grincher loads in a second time and is in the lobby for a little longer, and then leaves again. Nothing really happened, he was just there and then gone. Before grincher left my friend went to his steam profile and said he liked his photo, and i went to look at it was very silly. A little more after fmann joined, and again, they were not in spawn, my friend was in spawn when grincher joined, and I was in spawn when fmann joined. We saw neither of them load in. So my friend assumed they were a dev and asked them if they were. I got curious and wanted to look up if there was a list of webfishing devs somewhere because i did notice that there was an exclusive colour that only devs could have. Then I found this video, and me and him watched it, thought it was silly, and went on our way. However, fmann did do something. My friend and me were playing around with the mail and sending eachother gifts, but he had a gift from fmann, it was just money... like... alot of money. So my friend accepted it, thinking he could share it but he couldnt because there is no actual way to send money to other players. fmann also made it so he had like 444,444 bait of each kind, unsure if thats his new limit or if it's just how much he has now. Neither of them did anything "bad" at least that I know of, but its silly that i had the game for no more than like 10 hours and got to interact with 2 "urban legends" in the webfishing community. I also did leave my pc a while today to do stuff and left my world running. I had set it to a 2 person lobby with a code required to join, and it was me and the same friend from the night before. He had to take care of his baby and got off, but when I came back, i had been visited by grincher yet again.

I joined the game 3 days ago, put in nearly 20 hours in that time and i've seen a lot about grincher, honestly though it was just a group of hackers that just botted, I had no idea he's been around since basically release and actually caused some other harm other then confusion. I truly hope lame dev hires some trusted devs to help because Webfishing has huge potential for future updates off the base game but we desperately need to make sure hackers cant mess around with other peoples games, even if its only the server list.

Grincher joined my servers a few days ago, they were doing their spam joining, but stopped when I welcomed them back :> they just vibed. didnt see them ingame tho. ended up leaving when another player joined the server edit: holy shit. watched further into the video. the other person who had joined was the fman dude. wtf? It doesn't do anything, they can't get your personal details from an ip. Your public ip only shows your region, it's just how the internet works. Trust me, you probably use a lot of apps or play other games that share your public ip. There's way too much fear mongering around IPs. GTA online uses peer to peer connection, lots of cheaters, never once heard of anybody being personally identified through the game lol. It's impossible unless you actually tell someone details or you have personal accounts linked on your steam profile, which then isn't the fault of the game.

im not sure if webfishing uses the steam networking api but depending on your settings/games configuration and the version of the api being used your ip can be "leaked". And realistically, you should worry about your ip being leaked if youre being specifically targeted, but thats unlikely anyway
