I liked how you highlighted these eastereggs that Porsche made for these manual-equipped GT3s. To have those functions you mentioned James, must've costed Porsche quite a lot of money to develop, so hope the take-rate of the 991 AND upcoming 992 GT3s with manual will be high enough to make Porsche justify developing them! Perhaps the no-lift-shift applies to the 911R too? The way the gear knob is mounted (up relatively high) reminds me of that from the Carrera GT, brilliant.

Porsche has done an amazing job upgrading their manual cars for both track heads and normal everyday drivers. I think features like this make manual cars less intimidating to those trying to learn. Makes it a lot easier not sacrificing daily drive-ability with the manual opposed to the PDK.

You should try a motorcycle with an up & down quickshifter. No clutch at all. Just bang it through the sequencial gearbox for up shifts and down shifts. Clutchless up shifts used to be something to master. Clutchless down shifts though really mess with your mind if you have any mechanical sympathy.
@timothy9596
@timothy9596 5 жыл бұрын
I've been clutchless shifting for at least 30 years. Someone showed it to me in the late '80s and it was a revelation. Over time I found clutchless downshifting to be useful, but it's completely dependent on if the bike likes it. Most sportbikes I've owned loved to be clutchless up and downshifted. But some brands like the only Triumph I've owned hated it and would almost always lock up the rear for a split second. My next bike will have both up and down auto for sure.
@ardijanuar2036

Quickshifter can also apllied to a car with sequential gearbox with dog ring engagement. With normal syncros you at least have to lift or press the clutch if you don't want to grenading your gearbox.

Another epic video. This amazing gearbox can only be fully appreciated, if you experience it in person. I am so glad you are covering this amazing feature “no lift shift” as there is hardly any reviewers covering it. You sir are the first to do so... well done. Few of us who experienced and appreciated this feature early on, often wondered why no one is covering this epic experience, and I suspect you really have to own the car, to appreciate it, as it is counterintuitive and you must give it time to adapt your brains around it which is a luxury most reviewers don’t have as they are given the car for couple of hours to do a full review and most of them miss it, or possibly don’t fully appreciate it, given the short time they have with the car. Furthermore speaking to many GT3 owners with manual transmission, I am shocked to learn most are not aware of it, or some heard of it but have not experienced it, as no one has ever covered this feature at length. I am glad you are covering one of the most hidden treasures of this car. Well done, Mark

Agreed, but a lot of cars can do that now. And auto blip has been around for quite some time in other cars. It's really cool, but there's nothing like getting heel-toe just right. Part of the fun of a manual. But most people who drive manuals don't even know how to rev match, they just eff their clutches without knowing any better.

It’s interesting to me that this has taken so long to catch on to cars but this no lift shift function has been on racing motorcycles for over 20 years. A sensor is activated by the shift lever and the ignition is interrupted while the shift happens. That’s a bolt on kit you can add to any motorcycle. Today the top bike brands have it integrated but it’s been a common racing function for decades. I like your presentation and enthusiasm for the brand! I think it’s great to inform the car community about these features and demonstrate them in detail. I like your common sense approach to breaking the cars down to what they are and how best to use them from daily drivers to track weapons. Great job, keep,it up and I want to know more about the MR Tuning package!!

Enjoyable video James! Its amazing how a gearbox choice can dramatically change the character to the car - in the case of this 991.2 GT3, the rhythm of the driver going from gear-to-gear is very different from the PDK (gear ratios most likely play that part) and heck the mechanical noises (e.g whines) from the transmissions are different from the PDK too.

James, when I was a teen I had a manual transmission Chevy truck and learned the ratios where I could upshift and downshift without the clutch but did lift off the throttle to relieve the pressure from the gears. Only used the clutch to obviously stop and go. Later on when I married, my wife had a Beetle and I did the same thing in it. Never had another manual. Just a boring automatic American with the exception of two Toyota’s.

This solves the dilemma for me regarding ball-n-ball shifting. On my 997.1 S, I had the brake pedal repositioned to make it on the same plane with the accelerator pedal. It was soooo good that it was far quicker than heal-&-toe, which required an awkward movement of the ankle and therefore less micro adjustment when putting pressure on said pedal. I think that this is a game changer for many people and lets them drive fast with more confidence and assuredness.

I have a 981 GT4 and I use the auto blip rev match 50/50. If I'm driving in the city etc or just cruising it is is great. And for track days, I'm not the best at heal toeing and am still developing my technique, so it's great for that. Why not have the option if you want it. If you don't like it, then just don't use it. That simple.

The no-lift shift just feels so wrong, but it works! We used to "speed-shift" our cars back in high school, with not a lot of concern about potential engine damage, strictly because of ignorance and the fact they were usually beaters anyway. It's nice to know you can do it with impunity on this car. The auto blip on downshifts is nice while you're getting to know the GT3, because the pedal placement is not ideal for some folks style of heel-toe throttle matching. You see a lot of GT-3's with the after market throttle pedal extension to help those of us that roll our foot. Also nice while learning a new track, as James mentions. One less thing to think about...

Great content as always James, and glad you covered the flat shift in more detail in this video. As to the auto-blip feature, I think it is a good thing for those that don't have that much experience with heel/toe shifting while using the manual. It will save a few problems with the back end trying to come around for those that need to practice their heel/toe.

James why have you 'quit' the Modern Classic series? Your channel was growing in such a positive way, but the content recently has been very much of the same. Would love to see some TDF action and some more (modern) classics reviews on the channel. Keep up the great work ;)

Flatshift is simply an ignition cut/limiter when pressing the clutch. People have been fitting kits to do this to modified cars for 20+ years.

@@th3b0untyhunter no, of you knew more about cars, he implies what great tech it is to add to a GT3, and it is. Jesus, this community just looks to pick apart every little thing. Let it go. Do you know how many cars he's driven that have FFS and auto blip on this channel? He knows the tech isn't new, he's merely showing it in a car where it really sings. Settle down, stop being such a know-it-all, and just enjoy the singing of that 4.0, beautiful b roll, from a nice guy. Before you say shit like that, ask yourself how many sheer numbers of cars he's driven, and remember he knows everything you know, and a whole lot more, because I can tell you, the experience of A rev match in a 370Z vs a GT3 are vastly different experiences. Man, I can't stand KZbin know-it-alls.

@@smminco and I can't stand bellends like you who have to make things personal and are sycophants thinking their hero can do no wrong. I enjoy James videos, I've watched them since very early on BUT like most youtubers he does make mistakes and incorrect assumptions. (Shmee is the one who rarely makes errors, but unfortunately a lot of his stuff is almost unwatchable due to his target audience being the lowest common denominator ie aimed at the largest possible audience rather than the discerning one) This video was interesting but missed several key facts and perhaps an understanding of how the tech works.

@@th3b0untyhunter I'm not a sycophant. I'm supply pointing out the truth. He doesn't discuss how it works because, like you said, he knows his target audience. They wanna see the joy of driving, not have a technical explanation of how it works in the ECU, because like you said, that's the target audience of engineering explained or even shmee, like you said. You proved my point in your own comment. Thanks dufus.

Love your videos, quality is always second to none! I will say content has been so so lately. I guess you are extremely busy recently given that starting a new business is very demanding (i wish plenty of success with NVN!!!). Still a huge follower and admirer. Hope for future Aston content, perhaps some Lambo or Ferrari (other than the TDF). Again all the best!!

Mr JWW i think mainly the fact that there has been similar content based on your GT3. Don’t get me wrong, the ‘Ring was awesome and the GT3 is my favorite car (Touring spec, yes please) but i guess there is only so much one can watch you driving your amazing machine. Again, i love your channel and always enjoy your way of explaining and narrating how the cars or events feel. You are awesome! All the best

Heel-toeing is a race track / motorsport technique. So when on a track applying full (ish) brakes, it's easier to just mash the brakes and then down change into a corner. The problem with road use of this technique is that it takes a ton of practice and feel to apply anything less than full brakes while feathering the gas (and at road speeds, you don't often need anywhere near full brakes in modern sports cars..). Often you'll just over-brake which can cause its own problems. So for road cars and the majority of users that don't track their car, I can see why these developments have come into being! (not to mention the fact you're less likely to shag your gearbox synchros) 😂
