The reason there is a 15 year age gap is Rolf was born first then breaking news came out that dwarfs can become full sized as long as the estate in the mother's womb for 15 years. So they just stitched her up and sent her on her way. And why Matthew was so mad because they forgot that rule and let the kid out 15 years too soon.

Reading up on this and apparently theres a 150 minute directors cut that was screened like once at a film festival and then never seen again or something. I think the only available version now is the 90 minute producers cut.

To be fair to the film, it is said by those in the know, the final version is NOTHING like the original script. If you google this movie there is a discussion board with details but essentially it sounds like the casting of Oldman would have required VFX/CGI not available due to $$$ in order to make it look good enough to come off as the drama/"Role of a Lifetime" that it was written to be. AT the last minute, they decided to totally re-edit the movie with tons of footage cut out (hence it is only 90 minutes instead of 120+) so the movie's citchy/bad visual appearence could be chalked up to "its an Artsy/goofy/Big Lewbowski--esk" movie so its SUPPOSED to look bad!!" feel. It truly sounded like it COULD have been a great movie but the business of hollywood saw to an end to that potential.
