Great video. I notice that on my local river, the fishing is only really good for two months or so. Then it goes quiet. I need to get to some more rivers as only two months a year will get me nowhere in terms of practice!

Hi Conor, surely there is more than just two months action normally on most rivers they come alive in May and June when the trout seem to hit everything especially May fly and blue winged olive but then they become very selective mainly taking very small patterns and to catch these you have to fish very small dry patterns and very light tippets. I always emphasise that the fly must float but most importantly the tippet must not float or be seen so a very good quality sinkant or mud is critical in catching these shy fish. Late evening is best for seeing these hatches which can be medium or blue winged olive, small and large sedges,spinners, midges, terrestrials and the anglers nightmare caenis. Covering the olive family in size 18 fished as emerger and adult fly will take many trout especially on last light. Give the small patterns a try trust me thats how i caught most of the trout in the video using nothing bigger than size 18.

Hi Paul. Is that a home made version of your Shakespeare switch rod? Would there be trout up the Lee now 29 Jan. I started fly fishing last year without great success, can't wait to get going again though. Regards, Jock

Thats a norwegian 5wt blank with a slightly longer than normal fighting butt or switch butt which I customised to cover most of my trout fishing needs. The trout season doesn't open till the 15 th of February.

Hi Ruairi there is only one permit available at the dam but it covers salmon and trout. evening is 10 euros and full day 20 euros.

Hi Ruairi, the car park is at the bottom of the hill going into the dam, you will see the second gates and then a left turn into a car park.

Gink floatant and I use a home made mud sinkant that I make myself from fullers earth.
