Just found your channel and subscribed. Great explanations, coming at a time when I am struggling with a related issue. Anmachen & aufmachen, ,aufdrehen, & zudrehen, eischalten & ausschalten. Up or down with heating, the oven, lighting, etc. Do you have any pointers or rules?

The prefixes in your examples change the direction that is inherent in the base verb. Every verb has a direction, but it's not always a geometrical direction, so you have to think out of the box sometimes. Gehen is forwards. Drehen is from one side to another in a circle. Even verbs without an obvious direction have directions, example "lernen" its direction is from less to more. Almost all prefixes change this direction of a verb. You are probably wondering when to use what, if I understand you correctly. Well, that's not easy to explain if you don't know what the actual base verbs machen, drehen and schalten mean. You can anmachen, einschalten and ausschalten a light; you can anmachen, aufmachen, aufdrehen, zudrehen, einschalten and ausschalten a Heizung (heater/heating); and you can anmachen, aufmachen, einschalten, ausschalten and sometimes also aufdrehen and zudrehen the Ofen (oven). Machen means to do something that has a result, to do something without a result is 'tun'. (This meaning of 'tun' makes it pretty much unusable and it's the reason why it is less used in German unlike 'to do' in English.) If you machen (do) something with the heating, the oven or the light, it will have result. So what can you actually machen (do) with a heater or heating, you can turn on the heater, right? This is anmachen. Can you open the heater? This would be 'aufmachen' and it would foremost mean that you literally open the radiator. It is possible to intend to mean it like turn up the heater to get hotter temperatures but we Germans would rather use aufdrehen. Can you drehen (rotate) a heater? Yes, but no, just kidding, anyway 'drehen' refers not really to the radiator but the valve and the valve can be rotated and while rotating to the right it comes towards you and rotating it to the left it goes back, going back means it closes the water flow, going towards you opens the water flow. Auf and zu can mean open and closed, and here they do, so aufdrehen means literally you are rotating the valve to open up the waterflow inside the valve and zudrehen means the opposite. Here you see, you need to understand and know the meaning of drehen and what meaning it forms with the word Heizung. And then you can find out what prefixes do in that context. As an advise, get a German dictionary with explanations of the meaning in German, not a translation dictionary. Learn the prefixed verbs as you go and over time you will eventually get a feeling for prefixes and what they do, and then you won't need the help of a dictionary anymore. As a bonus: The prefix 'ver-' for example changes the direction of the base verb to 'not that direction of the base verb'. Example: Laufen has the direction towards a destination, whether mentioned or not doesn't matter. "Ich habe mich verlaufen." translates to "I am lost." because 'ver-' cuts off the direction to the destination or in other words, 'verlaufen' isn't directed to a destination due to 'ver-'. But be cautious with some words, 'verlassen' for example doesn't work this way, because its meaning is fixed.

@@MrLAntrim Thanks for the quick response, but it's a bit confusing, since your example in the video uses ''ínsist on''. Duden states that bestehen auf is used ''selten auch mit Akkusativ''.
