To answer your question about where Hogwarts is, it is in the Scottish highlands, but to Muggles, the castle just looks like old ruins with a sign that warns of danger and to stay away (told in the books but not movies). There are other enchantments which you will see in later movies to not spoil anything specific.

Not quire right, the fields and landscape scenes were filmed in the Scottish highlands but most of the courtyards, hallways, corridors and gothic themed places like that were filmed at Oxford university. Several parts of Hogwarts were filmed at Oxford University. In The Sorcerer's Stone, the students arriving at Hogwarts first ascend a stone staircase that, in real life, leads into the Great Hall of Christ Church College.

Fixing a wand is pretty difficult. Not anyone can do it, even a highly skilled witch or wizard. Also, the slug scene. Rupert Grint, who played Ron, had some difficulty with that scene. The “slugs” in question were actually made out of chocolate pudding and gelatin, so he found them quite tasty and didn’t want to spit them out.

The reason Hermione cant fix Ron's wand is because wands are made with extremely powerful and unique magical objects (pheonix feathers, unicorn hair, dragon heartstring) which makes mending a broken wand extremely difficult even for very powerful wizards. great reaction!

Draco's dad remembers Hermione because she's muggle-born and completely outperformed his son in school. That gives him enough animosity toward her and makes her stand out enough that he remembers her name. That and the fact that she hangs out with Harry.

Gotta say, Harry was never said to be the most powerful wizard. You're gathering that from your perception of the series before you began watching, but no one has insinuated it in the movies. You're wrong, he's the most talented one when it comes to DADA as well. People keep forgetting it, he didn't becom the professor of you know what later for nothing, he was much more advanced in it because of the Triwizard tournament, he was also able to perform very complex DADA spells, like the corporal form of the patronus charm at only 13, and it's said multiple times that's a great doing. He got there by experience, but he got there, he was talented at it like he was at quidditch.

I always took the adult incompetence as really magic related. We use a lot of brain power to make menial tasks and responsibilities easier. When you have magic, most problems are solved with a wand or potion and they don’t need to use much brain power to overcome problems. A lot of adult wizards like Dumbledore are described with more of a mischievous personality than what we would see as a stern principle normally. Mr. Weasly works for the government but doesn’t understand rubber ducks, batteries or even electricity. A kid getting hurt, some school drama and dangerous sports are trivial when you can grow back bones, clean messes or summon help with just the flick of a wand. Who cares what school you send your kid too. 😂 I’m sure when Harry isnt there, Hogwarts is quite safe.
@captbunnykiller1.0
@captbunnykiller1.0 Жыл бұрын
Great comment. It is quite true for muggles too, the more we delegate mental challenges to electronic devices the weaker the brain grows, it is a muscle after all. This has been discussed lengthly by anthropologists especially in terms of mnemonic strategies (to memorize epic tales e.g.) before and after writing was established for the general population, then again before and after the printing press and the computer. When the pocket calculator was invented, people were able to perform faster, but slowly forgot the strategies to solve mathmatical problems without it or even understand it. Much like the wands in the Wizarding world, it took a genius to invent it, only to have the user grow less intelligent.

Let me help you out: You were correct when you said Dumbledore could solve things easily in a few minutes (and I will add he could avoid things altogether by, say, NOT putting things like a sorcerer's stone in the school in the first place). But he wants to watch things play out in order to test Harry's strength. He admits exactly that in one of the later books (but I don't think that line made it into the movies).

It’s also based on the books and have a very in-depth story to tell. It’s the small scenes that give context for the rest of the scenes/ movies. SO many scenes on their own seem unimportant filler, but they are trying to explain how Harry’s (and those people around him) lives are. This is building the knowledge you’ll need for future movies. For instance, why does each character do what they do or act how they act. Very very few scenes are in this film to kill time or as filler.

I really enjoy your analizations of these movies. There's so much that's coming in later movies that will explain a lot of what you mention and question. Lots of other commenters told you that wands can't just be fixed, it's very difficult for anyone to do. Also, Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) said that he watched the first movie and got his ideas from watching Tom Felton (Draco). In fact, so it would look seamless in why his "son" acts the way he does. And, the thing about these books, Rowling wrote them basically treating kids with the respect that they'd understand the situations Harry and his friends were put into. And, that's probably why kids loved reading them, they weren't written down to.

The reason it takes so long to make the potion is the same as the reason it takes a long time to make wine or beer - that is, at points in making it, you have to leave it to agree. As for fixing wands, because the wand itself is magical, it is resistant to spells.

Remember Harry is famous because of his mothers sacrifice which countered Voldemorts killing curse. He is only the chosen one due to that fact. Yes he may be destined to defeat Voldemort but that doesn’t mean he will become the most powerful of them all. He has natural ability and is strong in character which is likely he gets from his parents but he is definitely not totally academic, that’s Hermione’s area and he is not as powerful as Dumbledore or even McGonagall. It’s the people around him that big him up and treat him like a celebrity that would take a lot out of a person so young. The magic world exists within the real world, just care has been taken to make it invisible to most of the non magic community like using charms and memory wipe spells. However in some countries like Britain , non magic and magic people are allowed to marry and have children and if the children possess magical abilities they can attend Hogwarts. Families like the Malfoys are prejudiced against anyone not considered pure blood , so that’s why Draco calls Hermione the ultimate insult. Rowling called non magic people Muggles which she created from the word ‘mug’ - a word to describe an easily fooled person. That’s why the normal person in the street doesn’t seem to notice and even if they did notice they probably wouldn’t be believed any way.

Actually, it is a loophole in the magic that binds house-elves. If they punish themselves for lying to their employers or talking ill of them, they don't have to tell them the truth afterwards lest they would be punished again. That was the only way Dobby could do all that without the Malfoy's noticing. For us the technique may be a mental relief, it makes us believe that we have paid for our failures, for them it is an actual getaround the magic.

Salazar wasn’t as simple as some may think. The histories go far back to when people were being murdered & other crazy things between muggles & the wizard kind. He was actually desiring to create this place to not just be a place of learning & curating knowledge but also a fortress against intruders! It’s a longer history that goes into several articles & channels showing this. This was to protect the children and all of wizard kind. SOME of the halfbloods long ago were used as pawns and essentially moles into the wizarding communities. Even back than sure not all hit it’s the ROOT of the judgment upon halfbloods & Muggleborns. Those like Lucius are practicing a tradition that was once noble that had stronger roots & traditions. It’s so far from that now that most families have fallen into mania. But not his wife. His wife is very cool & is only protecting Malfoy and teach him the ways of that realm and how to act and behave etc etc. He’s more like his mother & loves his mother! she grew up in the Black family tree & her original tree was related to Ravenclaws and had to change their name to something else to keep the line alive. Also. The basilisk was for that reason alone. To defend against intruders & infiltration; perhaps even to weed out LEGIT moles who were bringing danger to wizardkind. Salazar also was the only one to match Rowena Ravenclaw’s mind and originally they were to be betrothed. But ended up with Godric! ❤️

True, i've always felt like the general notion of Salazar being this wicked person with despicable attitudes has been overblown and embellished over the centuries. After all, Salazar and Godric were once the best of friends, so he must have had positive qualities as well. Magical people had very good reason to be fearful and distrustful of muggles back then, what with witch hunts and Inquisitions and all. But, I've never heard about Rowenna being romantically involved with Godric? Where is that from?

You put forth a lot of good points there. I'd like to add that if Salazar had been that evil entity as which he is portrayed, they would not have kept his house alive after he left, but they knew his contributon was vital to the integrity of the school. Not to forget that he and Godric were best friends, who challenged each other to new heights and drew inspiration from each other. Godric wasn't as pure and saint-like as he is being thought of either. For one, he screwed over the Goblins and thought it a riot, probably causing some of those in his days. But considering Hogwarts, I guess it is hard to get a fair shake in history if education is put in the hands of your former friends, now rivals.

In the book, At this very point, Lucius and Papa Weasley got into a physical fight and suffered multiple injuries, including black eyes. Haggard was the only one who could break them up. It would have been wild to see in the movie, but they decided against it.

I suppose because they have magic, potions etc to completely heal many of the injuries the muggles would consider irreversible, they don't see much cause to watch their children as much as they should. That does not excuse a three headed dog on school grounds though, but we all know that this is nothing compared to what is coming. The Dursley house is starting to seem safe and homely.

Harboring a runaway wouldn't be an issue. The magic system of government takes precedence over the muggle one, so nobody would really care that a wizard child was taken from muggle guardians.

I'm surprised how many people get confused by the whole 'parallel dimension' thing. I finished a reactor series a while back where the guy got all the way to Deathly Hallows part 2 and still wasn't sure if all the skyscrapers in London were like a wizard version of London, filled with wizard workers, or was the real London. When characters say things like, "you risked the exposure of our world" they don't literally mean a different world - it's an analogy, like the Wide World of Sports, or a craft store being called World of Yarn. They just use charms to disguise themselves and hide from muggle eyes. For example, if a muggle were to look at Hogwarts, all they would see is an "old moldering ruin" as the books describe it.

@12:36 Is Harry a runnaway? I don't think it is expressed explicitly, even in the books; but a reasonable assumption is that you can conceive the legal system or Magical Britain to something close to Southafrican Apartheid. In that system, I suppose, it would be inconceivable that an obviously Caucasian looking orphan kid would go to their last of kin relative, if said relative was Black. The decision to have Harry raised by the Dursleys was most likely Dumbledore's, as you have seen hinted in movie #1 (and is elaborated further through the rest of the series). Who's the actual holder of Harry's custody, and why they cannot live together will be revealed in movie #3. Of course, the Doylean explanation is that the novels were originally written as children books. The Dursleys are unidimensional incarnations of the "wicked step-parents" trope, and the target audience is expected to know nothing about family laws.

The thing about the Harry Potter books is that the author, JK Rowling originally wrote the series for adults. It was the book publishers that decided to advertise it as children's books. If you read between the lines of the story you will see it is a satire. First, one has to understand that you the reader are looking at the story through Harry Potter's point of view as he grows up throughout the years at Hogwarts. In the first book and movie Harry is 11 years old so you see his world from his 11 year old mindset and maturity. But as he grows up and begins to understand things more and more the story gets darker and less innocent as he matures with age. The reason I call the books a satire is that many of the stories deals with racism of a different kind and political corruption. Dobby might be a house elf but nevertheless he is a slave just the same. There might not be any racism in the wizarding world against people of color but there is racism against wizards who do not come from pure magical families. Harry doesn't see the horrible similarities between the wizarding world and the muggle world at this point because he is only 12 years old during The Chamber of Secrets. To a certain extent he is still an innocent little boy and is not mature enough to comprehend it all to the fullest extent. 🏰🧙‍♂️🧙🏻‍♀️🧒🪄⚡️📚📽🎞🖤

So the building in which the movie was filmed around is actually multiple buildings it multiple different locations, and edited to make it look as though it is one Castle. The hall way that you are speaking of I believe was a Abby at one point. The reason why Ron's wand is not repaired was because they tried to but it was unmendable it was too badly damaged, in the books in the movie they don't show that

Interestingly, Hogwarts was not the only magical school founded by four people. The same applies to Ilvermorny, which is located in North America. It was founded by an Irish witch, her No-Maj (“Muggle” in American) husband, and their two adopted wizards kids. Each also named a house, except theirs are named after their favorite magical creatures. The similarity is not a concidence. The witch had always wanted to go to Hogwarts but her evil aunt wouldn’t let her, so when she started her own school across the pond she based it on the idealized vision of Hogwarts

Due to these being movies they can’t explain everything. However there is a reason for everything, which is why I have enjoyed rereading the series multiple times since I started reading them around 2000 (I was 7 or eight when I started reading them). Rereading was also necessary because I would have to wait for the latest book to be publishing before continuing. I don’t have a problem with the movies (besides them making Ron a bumbling baboon) but I definitely prefer the books.

So a little history about the lore (that you won't learn from the movies) to answer your questions about wizard secrecy, essentially this universe is strongly grounded in reality. Muggles used to know about wizards and they used to live together until the witch trials. In the HP universe the witch trials involved actual wizards so after that so after that the global wizard governments decided to hide their presence from muggles with what was called the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy (fun fact the malfoys were actually against it because they still somewhat valued relationships with muggles of noble background). So after that wizards went into hiding, and any wizard who breaks this secrecy law can be in serious trouble. Aside from that wizards can obliviate muggles, that is erase their memories and use concealment charms to hide places such as Hogwarts, making them essentially invisible to muggles and their technology. The only muggles who know about wizards are parents of wizards like Hermione's or people who married a wizard. As to the wand, mending wands is difficult and can only be done by very experienced wand makers, certainly not by a second year student. Hope that answered your interrogations :)

The books go into more detail on it, but places like Hogwarts have a spell cast upon them so that if a satellite passed overhead and took a picture, or if some muggles should hike past it, all either would see is an old, crumbling castle. And if any muggle should have just enough magic in them to see through this illusion, and try to take a picture of Hogwarts on their iPhone for example, it wouldn’t work, because all the magic in the air around places where wizards gather frequently interferes with human technology, particularly anything electrical.

Everything in this film was essential to the plot. You will understand things more as the series goes on. Just remember this is a whimsical series. There's good vs evil. Our laws and rules don't apply. The majority of non magic folk don't believe in magic thus don't comprehend any oddity they might see as magical as it doesn't compute. Magic things are incorporated right in plain sight. Dumbledore looks the same age as he did all those years ago due to the possession of the sorcerer's stone. Which was discussed in the first film. Wands choose their owner and cannot be repaired. They each contain a feather (Harry's contained a phoenix feather). Once it's broken the magic can't be repaired by any ordinary wand. Also, I don't want to give any spoilers but if Harry's parents weren't killed, Harry would just be an ordinary wizard. You will understand more as the films progress. His powers are directly related to the death of his parents. This is definitely a fantasy film and they progressively get darker up until the last one. You will see that transition with each one along with the filters used. You will learn in the 3rd film about Askaban where Hagrid was temporarily held and you will find it is nothing close to a county jail. Yes, Harry, Hermione and Ron seem to encounter the craziest situations but the whole point of Hogwarts is to learn magic. There is good and bad magic as you will learn more about in the future films. Anyone 17 years of age and older are allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts. Ron and the twins did not use magic. The car already had the flying spell so it didn't require them to use another incantation. I know it's difficult to put the logical thinking aside but it's essential when watching these type of movies. The Harry Potter world is anything but logical. Who would the Dursleys call to report Harry as a runaway? First off all they'd have to explain the bars on the window and their neglect and abuse. 2ndly wizard law's and regulations are vastly different then muggles. So if one were too attempt to explain that Harry was a wizard , they'd think you were a nutter and you'd get thrown in the looney bin. Also the Dursleys took no interest in Harry's life so even if they cared to report him and have him found they wouldn't be able to give the local law enforcement any ideas. No non magical folk would ever be able to locate Hogwarts or visit it and I guarantee the Dursleys had no idea who any of Harry's friends or instructors were. It's a coming of age story containing a whimsical magical story. Everything that happens is essential to the film. Even if it seems insignificant now. There is a reason the trio are the ones always finding themselves in precarious situations. While it seems that the older wizards seem incompetent, just because they aren't directly involved in these situations doesn't mean they are sitting around doing nothing. Also only Harry has encountered Voldemort at this point. While Dumbledore is aware of the rising fear of Voldemort's return and what that would mean for Harry and anyone associated with protecting Harry no one knows what his plans are or how he will carry them out. It wasn't until Harry discovered the Chamber of Secrets that Dumbledore and the other teachers found out that Tom Riddle was behind it. There's also a reason why Harry is the one to figure these things out and not anyone else.
