I found it somewhat insulting when he said that “this genre usually doesn’t have vocals like this.” I had to remind myself that these days most people aren’t exposed to much heavy metal. The reality is that metal is built around high soaring vocals. To sing heavy metal you are almost required to be a baritone with a pretty outrageous range. It reminds me of opera. If you are a beginner I would recommend Dio, Judas Priest, Saxon and deep purple. All of these bands have legendary vocalists.

Iron Maiden LOVES to use Historical, Literary and Pop-Culture references in their lyrics. It's a huge part of their success, because the songs are relatable. They're not big on abstraction and leaving things to interpretation. You can take everything at face value, even if there are nuances to it.

Vocals like this are quite common in Metal. Listen to Dio, Judas Priest, Queensrhyche.

Can you really say "This is quite common" when all of your examples are from the 80's? You need to give more modern examples like Unleash The Archers or something. I would, but I don't listen to much music anymore.

We don't know if this person is guilty or innocent, or what time in history! But contemplating his life, knowing his death is coming, the five final stages of grief run through this man. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance ... *Masterful lyrics!* 😁🤘

One can extrapolate the time somewhat. The gallows as the place of execution would put it between 15th and 18th century, although there were places where executions still took place in that manner into the 20th century it was quite rare.

Sir - as a reasonable educated man - you are going to love Iron Maiden. The primary lyricist is the Bass Player, Steve Harris, who is a voracious reader of great literature. Hence you will find Murders in the Rue Morgue, Flight of Icarus, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Trooper (charge of the light brigade), Alexander the Great, and many more volumes in their songs. Dig in. Enjoy.

It's a shame you didn't think the song was worth finishing. Granted, you ALMOST made it to the end, but that tight ending is part of what makes this version of this song so cool. Great vocals, undeniable. But a great band, too. Thank you sir, for choosing such a classic!

I was 16 when i discovered Iron Maiden and it was this song that opened all the doors. At that time it was already 8 years old, so i felt to be very late to the party...... 34 years have passed since and sometimes it still feels like it was yesterday! And still they rock the biggest stages and everyone gets crazy when this song comes up.... Wild! Thanks man

In the story of the lyrics, there is no mention is the condemned was guilty or innocent. It was all about the death march that would start at 5 o'clock. Walking though life knowing you could die at any moment is passive and comfortable. Knowing the exact time of you death and being escorted to your fate is an awesome concept that only a few experience and none can tell the experience.

Iron Maiden love writing songs that touch on stories, or the Bible, or something historical. This one is, as you say, a prisoner on Death Row. Harris used lyrics from Beckett's Life's Shadow which he meant to replace but ran out of time and they got sued. They settled out of court. Life's Shadow vs 3 (repeated at 6) and 4 Mark my words my soul lives on Please don't worry cause I have gone I've gone beyond to see the truth While I consider my new -(youth) When your time is close at hand Maybe then you'll understand Life down there is just a strange illusion Hallowed Be Thy Name vs. 5 Mark my words, believe, my soul lives on Don't worry now that I have gone I've gone beyond to see the truth When you know that your time is close at hand Maybe then you'll begin to understand Life down here is just a strange illusion I had a 3 or so x g grand aunt who was killed in a barn with a billhook, and the guy who did it was hanged. You have to ask if all these thoughts went through his head as he was lead out the Assizes to the gallows. I've got a ref for that story because it was extremely well reported at the time. "Brackenfield Barn Murder 1896," Crich Parish website. The young woman in the sketch at the top right is my 2 or so x G grandmother.

Got to see Maiden live for the first time a few months ago. Next year is their 50th anniversary. With age and medical issues, they obviously aren't at the same level as in the 80's but two nights in a row they put on damn amazing 2 hour shows. They've already announced their next tour, and I am looking forward to it.

Bruce as a good majority of Metal singers both Male and Female alike are classically trained to some degree there only a few that are self taught that have vocals like this. Almost all of Metal has these kind of vocals. I know you’re still know to metal yourself but trust me. Metal as a genre was built around the singers vocals, all great or even good metal bands have great vocalists.

"This is not a dream, Bro. This is happening to you"! FINALLY someone gets it! He is tormenting himself with reasoning of why he is ok with what is happening. After the long instrumental, which is repetitive intentionally to show the slowness of time, and make him realize he cannot stop his death from coming, he finally gives his soul to God at the very end and screams, "HALLOWED BE THY NAME"!

Ok.... knowing that Iron Maiden usually sing about historical events and the song is Hallowed be thy name, then in my imagination it stands to reason this is probably a couple of hundred years ago not modern times.... Gallow is also a hint.... death row not likely, probably sentence to hang that day or very recently and if it was that long ago then he could be innocent or accused of something minor as they liked to end the life of people rather than put them in prison....
