On Twitch, Ren said when he wrote Masochist he'd just come out of a "f'kn sh!t situation with the last people I was working with in the music business, so I was angry at everything and I thought I'd write that song (Masochist) and it made me feel better. Obviously it's not literal, I thought that maybe some people who were more religiously inclined might get upset about it but it's all sort of metaphors and it's all like my own journey and my own wrestling with spirituality when your body's been hurting for so many years, so that's where it comes from. It's not like being offensive to be offensive, it comes from a place of doubting your purpose if your in pain all the time. So that verse comes from there, cause I know some people will probably take it literally, as a face value: 'kill your mother, kill your father'; all that sort of stuff - it's just kind of cursing existing basically cursing the sheer act of beling alive, so in case anyone was wondering, that's why."

The beat when isolated sounds very much like the EMPD "So what you saying" taken from B.T. Express's ("If It Don't Turn You on You Oughta Leave It Alone") break, also the sting like Bee lines with prolonged pronunciation & rising pitch is homage to KRS 1

"Let's switch to role-play. I'll be the court case, and you be O.J." Role-play is often used in a sexual setting. The court case had every indication that O.J. was guilty, but it let him off anyway. I do believe Ren is saying that he is "getting us off" with this song.

Unfortunately, I believe you are following but one line of thinking about 'eenie, meenie... et al'.... The origins are quite clouded, but the main consensus is that it stems from some cultures way of counting.... Whether it's a Celt trying to determine a sacrifice, or a Danish farmer counting sheep.... Ali would have been wrong for protesting it.

He wrote on his community KZbin page earlier today, "I expected a split reception on masochist, I'm glad I got it I wrote the song on a day in 2021 I felt particularly bitter about living in a sick body for most my life, about anger at the greed in the music industry. Killing everything you know, even your support systems is also about rebirth, some people will have caught the Samsara line and see a man cursing the gods for the hands hes been dealt, others will see it as a track thats just being vulgar and dark for the sake of it. It's all of those things."

I discovered ren when hi ren had abuot 500000 clicks after barely two months since then I have been deeply immersed in his universe that is now repeatedly referred to by the reactor scene as Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole. As a German with 68 years I learn thanks to Ren since then an incredible amount of facts about hip hop, rap, alternative pop and everything that is influenced and expressed around it. Listening to you and diving into the deeper aspects and connections around Ren's musical and literary multiverse, to which you so profoundly dedicate your reviews, is an absolute pleasure for me and I really enjoy your contributions which you know how to convey with great sympathy and wisdom. Thank you very much.

I'm glad to see someone else that bursts out laughing at the, "Nah-nah-nah-nah, mate. That's not him." I love that bit. It's like he breaks and calls himself out on the song - a song that is very aggressive in a way we don't generally hear from Ren. He can come at you, but generally is still good hearted when doing so (unless you are the establishment of course). But this was just aggressive, and I love it. Everybody has to vent from time to time....

I didn’t enjoy this song even though I am a Ren fan. I understand and appreciate the criticism and critique of western civilization and society. This just seems dark to me which may seem to be the point especially from the breadcrumbs of the trail from previous song releases which provides context. There seems to be no playfulness which also maybe the point. Ok, after watching several reactions I can see Ren is being playful with the beats, flow, cultural references, and of course word play. But REN’s choice of words in his lyrics shows how dark Ren’s eternal dance and mental state has been. As expected Knox’s, Cliff bests, yours, and other reactors and their analysis 🧐 on Ren’s lyrics and flow has been enlightening. This song is not something I would choose listen to on repeat often. Darkness concentrated.

Yes, there are definitely specific hip-hop references in there but not everything is. I think you were reaching on a few of them. Sometimes it's just a common turn of phrase that's been used by untold numbers of artists. The fact that a hip-hop artist once used a phrase, doesn't give them a trademark on it. Inspiration can come from all kinds of directions, musical and non-musical alike. Especially for an artist like Ren. :)

The officer will pull you over just when he's pursuin' The overseer had the right to get ill And if you fought back, the overseer had the right to kill, The officer has the right to arrest, And if you fight back they put a hole in your chest" Woop Woop that's the sound of Masochism? I am unsure if Ren was aware of the USA racist version of, Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe. Putting it before Mohamed Ali, was certainly inappropriate to a U.S. audience. I believe had Ren known? he would have changed this line. The Rhyme is much older than the U.S. version. Perhaps 1000 years celtic or dutch origin and the English (UK version) has different 2nd verse and was never used as a racist slur in the UK. But still, quite insensitive by Ren. Even if unknowingly.

Personally, this isn't a song I'd listen to. Not because of the content, it just doesn't sound as good to me compared to say, Genesis. I respect the artistry, though, as well as the mindset behind the lyrics. I find it funny people get offended, as if they own Ren's image 😅 Eminem was doing similar way back when (and for me personally most of those songs I wouldn't listen to either) so this destructive lyricism, metaphorically or not, has been around for a long time. One mention of religion in a negative light and everybody loses their minds, but Ren says he'll blow up a school or something and people will laugh it off 😂 Bit of a Joker reference there, but it's interesting, religion really is the opium of the masses. Break your attachments, all of them, to be reborn. That's some of what I took from this song.
