Saw her in Vegas by accident! Saw all her appearances on Johnny Carson years before, but stumbled into a special event at a nightclub....she played 2.5 hrs straight with little conversation in between, she was dripping wet but continued to blast out flamenco and classical just as Andrea Segovia taught her to do..

Even crazier still, a lot of flamenco guitarists use nylon string classical 6 string guitars. They are easier to pick and strum and Roy is using a 12-string steel and his accuracy is freaking amazing. It is so hard to move the wrist as fast as he is doing during the strum parts on a 12 string steel let alone on a 6 string nylon and keep the sound clean. Roy's main genre was country, but he could play anything and do it amazingly well. To say today's players do it better is ignorant. Every generation had amazing players and Roy Clark was one of them.

One of the greatest strumming performances. As a guitar player I showed that video to my hands and asked "why can't you guys do that?" No reply. Saw him in Las Vegas once. At one point, on one song he played just about every instrument in the band. As I recall he was quite the fiddle player too. Thanks for bringing back some great memories,

"I don't know how iconic it (Malaguena) is in America." Well, sir, I can tell you that if someone has ever been in a marching band, they know this song, inside and out. I was in marching band in high school and college and played the song several times. it is, by far, my favorite song I've ever marched to (I even passed out once while practicing it in high school!). I will get up and scream my damn head off whenever I hear a marching band start in with those iconic opening notes. If you ever want to see (what I consider) the best version ever, look up The Madison Scouts playing it at the 1988 DCI show in Kansas City. I legit get teary-eyed whenever I watch that video.

Wow, brings back a lot of memories for me. My grandfather & Roy Clark's father Hester were hunting buddies. His father was a tobacco farmer in Virginia & my grandfather was a tobacco farmer in Maryland. My grandmother & his mother worked together at the mapping department at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. I was a small child but I remember them all meeting at the house a few times a year to go hunting. Back then, I knew he was a musician and had heard him play the guitar and banjo, but it was always bluegrass music. It wasn't until he hit it big in the late 70's with the hit song "Yesterday when I was young" and landed the tv show Hee Haw, that I realized he was a country singer on the radio. He had moved to Tennessee by then, and I was busy being a teenager, so I didn't see him again after that. 😏 I'd love to hear you review that 78 hit song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/faK4ZquZhq9gj6c
