Buck Trent is almost a legend as big as Roy. They are equally talented but Roy is better known. Like Roy, Buck plays a variety of instruments including guitar, 5 string banjo, mandolin, steel guitar, and dobro. He invented the electric banjo. He currently has his own show in Branson, I believe. Buck has been in country music his entire life. He started playing on radio shows in Spartanburg South Carolina at age 11. He played in several bands including for the Grand Ole Opry. He played lead guitar on Dolly Parton's Jolene and I Will Always Love You. He became more publicly known when he joined Roy on the TV show Hee Haw. Buck is every bit as talented as Roy and the two on Hee Haw made them a household name. Roy and Buck toured together for several years. They were the first Country and Western act to tour the Soviet Union in 1976. In addition to Dueling Banjos, the pair is also well know for their rendition of Ghost Riders In The Sky in which Roy once again works his magic.

I am a HUGE Elvis fan but obviously recognise great talents in other spheres! This was AM-AZE-ING!!! 1 was born 1947 and as a child (here in a village in the middle of England) my dad was a HUGE fan of country music, including blue-grass and great banjo players. (I wasn't aware of Buck trend, I apologise and he's great)! It was always on the record player after he was home from work. Before Elvis came into my life, the first names of country I heard was the Singing Brakemann Jimmy Rodgers then great, great Hank Williams! The Country Music Poet and his alias Luke the Drifter was a heart wrenching dialogue type rendition. Unique! What can one say? I feel enlightened being exposed to such great music so young. Pity I never learned the art, too busy listening to it and loving it! I appreciate all music from Grand Ole Opry to Covent Garden Opera House! The first time I recall hearing Roy Clark play and I recognised, was The Orange Blossom Special. Aren't we blessed! Btw, thank you and I like your style, delivery and speaking voice! 👌🤗❤️🇬🇧

If masterful playing and comedic theatrics is in your wheelhouse, you might like Victor Borge. He's a pianist who mixed his love of music with comedic routines (as well as some stand-up bits like phonetic punctuation). One of my favorites is when he's playing accompaniment for an opera singer. Hijinks ensue. He also did a bit with a man turning the pages of his sheet music for him (I believe the man was actually his son if I remember correctly). You might like that sort of thing.

Buck Trent Lives here in Branson MO and until the pandemic was playing shows in local theaters. He and his wife Jean are the sweetest people. Buck lost his long time Bass player Randy McConnel last year. The story goes that when Roy Clark felt that he was getting in a rut he would come to Branson spend a day playing back and forth with Buck Trent and leave revived and excited about the banjo! Roy considered Buck to be the most inventive banjo player on the planet.

"Entertainment at this level"... I never really thought of it that way. Growing up in the 70's this was the norm. Never thought about how much we have devolved. As far as PC is concerned - not sure when our skin got so thin that everything is now offensive or disrespectful. Back then we were terrible to each other by todays standards, yet we all got along and enjoyed each others company.

A bit of trivia: The original Dueling Banjos, called "Feudin' Banjos" was recorded in 1955 with a 5 string banjo played in a Bluegrass finger-picking style (as are both banjos in this video) but the second was a Plectrum banjo which lacks the fifth string but has the same tuning and is played with a pick.

When I was a teenager (in the late 60's, early 70's) there was a show on in the evening called ,"Hee Haw".... Roy Clark, Buck Trent and Buck Owens were the 3 guitar and banjo players on there.... They always did the dueling banjos/guitars, etc.... it was a variety show ....There was Roy Clark, Buck Owens, Minnie Pearl, Junior Samples, Grandpa Jones, Lulu Roman, and of course the girls in their short shorts,.......etc... They would also have famous people on there...usually country singers..

Although I'm a rocker to this day I grew up watching HeeHaw. Seeing so many people reacting to great performances by Roy and his friends brings it all back. Roy was a master of his (multiple) craft(s) and a great showman. When you see him collaborate with someone they're a true talent as well, and you can always see the respect between them. In a performance like this it's two good friends trying to see just how far up they can take the performance, with a good deal of fun for us to enjoy along the way.

Thanks, again! Mickey Mantle, the great ballplayer, was born in Commerce, Oklahoma, and was a big Country Western fan. He loved Roy Clark and the feeling was mutual. When 'The Mick' passed away there was a memorial service for him and his closest and most famous fans were at the event and Roy sang one of Mickey's favorite songs. Pretty emotional moment especially if you were a big Mickey Mantle fan as I was. Please look for it. Maybe someone else can give you the formula to get it. Very special video.

"Hee Haw" was a country music/comedy/variety show in the '60's and '70's. Roy Clark was one of the hosts of the show, and I get the impression that he was making the guest of this episode "look good". I'm pretty sure that Roy could have blown away Buck Trent if he put some more fuel on the fire, not taking anything away from Trent of course, who is a consummate musician in his own regard. For another example of Roy's talent, look up his appearance on the '70's show, "The Odd Couple" where he rips off an incredible rendition of "Malaguena"

Roy never tried to show up any of the guests. There is one episode with a young boy, as a guest, playing the violin (fiddle) with Roy and Roy made sure he did NOT play better than the up and coming star, and this boy was very very good for his age - about 12 or so. He "may" have been able to play better than Buck, but you would never know it when they were on stage together. I have heard him play better on other songs, so it was hard to compare for this episode.

In the Wikipedia article, Buck Trent is credited as the inventor of the electric banjo. He is a great instrumentalist who also plays ddobro, guitar and bass guitar. If you like string wizards, I can also recommend Joe Maphis who plays guitar, banjo, fiddle, dobro, mandolin and stand-up bass in about two minutes, while singing and not losing a beat! Search picking and a grinning or picking and singing. I've seen him do this on two old TV shows. Picking and singing was on the Jimmy Dean show and Joe changes his lyrics to fit the venue.
