This from The Wall concert 1990 i think, after the Berlin Wall came down, and was in Potsdamer Platz, between East and West Germany at the time. I was at this concert, and it was amazing :)

Sinead OConnor’s childhood was rough. Her abusive mum who died in a car wreck when Sinead was a teenager. She was locked up in a Magdalene Laundry run by the Irish Catholic Church where she was abused and traumatized. This song in the context of her complex mother-daughter relationship is raw and real. Thanks for the reaction. I recommend “Troy” (studio and live) and “Black Boys on Mopeds” as your next steps down this rabbit hole.

I’ve loved all of Sinéad’s original music since I first heard ‘Troy’ from her debut album ‘The Lion & The Cobra’ back in the 80’s which is a masterpiece of an album. Still her countless collaborations and renditions must be heard. In fact I’ve always called Sinéad The Irish Queen of Covers. For example also check out her magical cover of ‘Sacrifice’ by Elton John. Her cover of classics like ‘Ode To Billy Joe’ and ‘House of the Rising Sun’ Sinéad even brilliantly covered ‘Chiquitita’ by ABBA! I could go on and on as she has a way of making each cover her own.

I was one of the lucky guys to see this live (f!ing goosebumps). Sinéad is controversial for so many people ... for the right or wrong reasons, I'll leave that in the middle. But this was straight out beautiful. I've seen her like three time and the positive still prevails ... I wish her all the best and hope to see her on stage once again.

was there 1990. but as far as i remember this is not the version from the concert because of sound difficulties - they recorded the whole concert the night before so they showed this version on tv. we were camping at the side of the area so we could enjoy the concert twice. sadly the acoustic was bad but it was a once in a lifetime experience.

The back story to this video is that Sinead was pissed off. The sound was a recording from the rehearsal that they said they always recorded. Show time came and the cut the mic. Sinead's problem is that people paid tons of money to see "The Wall Tribute Concert" and it wasn't live. She believed in all concerts or shows being live. Image of she was actually singing this live.

This song is from The Wall and describes an overprotective mother. She put all her fears into him. She is building The (emotional) Wall, leaving her son unsure of just about everything. If you haven't watched the movie, I recommend it with the disclaimer that it's both weird and disturbing. But the music! And it puts the classic radio staples into their larger context.

This video of her performance was from the previous night's dress rehearsal with the crowd superimposed. Seems the video from the actual concert for this part was messed up or some tech issue happened. I think there were 2 other performances where they had to do the same for the video.

I enjoy parts of the wall in Berlin but I can't think of any particular rendition there which is superior to the original, including this one. Scorpions did a great job with in the flesh. Maybe I'd say that bryan Adams breathless version of what shall we do now (the song that was in the movie but not on the wall album) exceeded the original, but that's about the only one I can think of

She was such a genius. The song as recorded on The Wall itself hits you in the gut to begin with (I still can't listen to that entire album without breaking down). But her voice is transcendent. I think Sinead was someone who understood how deeply emotion could be expressed through song, so she was a perfect choice for this version. So gorgeous. I can't believe she's gone.

Yeah the whole song is an overprotective mother so worried about her child that she doesn't let him experience life. She helps build the wall between him and the rest of the world, cutting him off from society. The last line is tearworthy. Mother did it have to be so high?

as you no doubt recognize, this is NOT a "Mother's Day" tribute....in 'The Wall' movie/video, the singer is a messed up performer (musician) who was emotionally smothered by his mother, who "protected" him from living a real life , leading to his complete alienation from society, complete with drug dependence and violent tendencies.......thanks to other commenters (below) for also recognizing this......this is a Roger Waters masterpiece........sung with heartfelt emotion by Sinead ( R.I.P. ), whose openly 'bad' relationship with her Mum was well known.......

This song, while great, only shows off part of her vocal range. My favorite of hers is probably Troy where she shows off a bit more. Also her cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U is fantastic, and used to be my favorite version until Chris Cornell covered it. Keep up the good work, it is always fun to watch people discover some of my favorite music for the first time.

The chorus, sung by David Gilmour in the original, is what fails this version. Farming it out to the multiple vocalists was a bad choice. It is a conversation between Pink and his mother. Two single voices. O'Conner is lovely in her part. Just should have settled on a single voice to reply.

I've watched this wall in Berlin show countless times (mostly in the first several years after it came out) and it really is a mixed bag. Cyndi Lauper prancing around and singing another brick in the wall was really a low point. Bryan Adams was amazing on what shall we do now. Scorpions did very well. This song here always bothered me a bit. The choruses with the band are a mess and just don't work. I do like the melancholy accordion throughout, and sinead sounds appropriately sad and somber but I wish she had put more inflection in her voice during other parts besides those two lines near the end
