Perhaps seeing it in context - the movie "The Wall" - would help you. It's about Pink, the main character, retreating from reality of living in the spotlight as a star and his feelings towards his mother, his girlfriend and the wall he has to build to insulate himself from problems he sees as coming from outside. The pin prick was the doctor bringing him out of his drugged stupor to "do the show". I don't know of another guitarist who can make his instrument express emotions as eloquently as David Gilmour - that is the glory of this solo! repetitive parts for the feeling of "here we go again" and the soaring highs and deepening lows...... for words to parallel this listen to "WASP"' playing "The Crimson Idol". and, of course, the rest of the Pink Floyd album "The Wall"..... mundane existence? NO!

Pink Floyd is an acquired taste and requires some patience. I've been fortunate to see Pink Floyd twice in concert, and both shows were a feast for the ears and eyes. it's not alcohol, or illegal drugs. it's a doctor, seeing to a guitarist, before a show, giving him painkillers, so he could perform on stage. it's from the point of view of the man, many years later, remembering the incident. he's old and has become comfortably numb, after many years of pain and suffering, mostly from mental health issues

Forgive me @MrLboyb, when I first started watching you I assumed you were my age. You are 10 yrs younger I found out from watching another reaction of yours. Back in the distant past of the late 70'd and early 80's when albums were listened to from beginning to end in one listening with the lyric sleeve in hand. There were a style of album known as a concept album that had a common theme or story that ran through each song. The album this song comes from is such an album. To get the full story you need to hear the whole album preferably in one setting. Better yet watch the movie based off the screenplay. All the songs are in the movie as they tale the tale. The album this comes from is THE WALL. It is considered one of the best albums ever recorded and has sold over 30 million units worldwide and went platinum, diamond and even double diamond in some countries. Sorry for the book, you know I love sharing great music. I hope you check this work out in its entirety.

Back in the 50's through to to 90's, artists had a Dr. that travelled with the band. Their only job was to make sure the artists could go on. They fed them dexydrine, coke, diet pills, pain killers, anxiety meds, etc ad infinitum. It was just easier to keep them medicated and drunk.

You picked up on the meaning of the song perfectly. To understand the "why" would be impossible without full context. It's like trying to understand a book by reading a chapter in the middle. This song from The Wall album is a chapter in that album which is essentially a musical story/journey. The character in this case is based on the life of the lead singer (not in this video as he had already left the band), Roger Waters, who at this point in the story was suffering from anxiety, wishing to retreat from the spotlight that is over his life and mostly just want to retreat from the world - as he grew up sheltered and over-protected, and was not prepared with how dark, cold and cruel the real world actually is. Greatest musical outro of all time, and it's much more than just a guitar solo, it's a full band musical extravaganza of sound. I pity those who cannot allow themselves to feel and appreciate such epic musicianship.

Interesting reaction to the solo. My take on why it’s iconic. No matter the instrument, the challenge is to write something original and enduring, within the limits of, in this case, the fretboard of the guitar. Some most appreciate vocals, some lyrics, some drums, some keyboards, etc. For those that appreciate guitar (maybe play or otherwise understand the instrument), this is as well written and emotive a solo as we’ve ever heard. Pretty much every top ten list of best solos of all time has this first, or second to Stairway to Heaven. The Wall was released in 1979, so this solo is 43 years old and in that time nobody has written anything better. Great yes. Better, no. Love your work Mr. Boyd. And respect your willingness to acknowledge that this didn’t move you. Going to make a recommendation that may be a stretch but if you’re willing, react to the “Live 8” performance of this song. Not entirely because of the song itself but because it is the last time the members of this band were on stage together, or ever will be.

Some people feel music more than others. I’m one of those people. MrLBoyd has shown time and time again he is not. He’s more into lyrics, which he states. He’s probably 75% lyrics, 25% music…So you shouldn’t be surprised with this reaction. He doesn’t appreciate the arrangement or skill in music or feeling of the song as much. If you want his reaction to align with how you feel about a song , pick a heavy lyric song. Personally, I think James Vincent McMorrow is the greatest lyricist I know of..His music is arranged beautifully too, though I like his earlier work more.Songs like Down the Burning Rope, This Old Dark Machine…I could go on and on. I would be interested in hearing more of that specific type of content.

This song is off "The Wall" album which is a concept album. The songs while you can get something from them, they kinda depend on the other songs of the album for the real meaning. But Pink Floyd songs isn't just about the lyrics but also the emotion of the music. Like "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is a good song, but most of it is instrumental. Like parts 1 through 5 of that song is just over 13 minutes and you don't hear any lyrics for the first 8 minutes of the song and the lyrics are just about 2.5 minutes long. So, Pink Floyd is more about the music and the lyrics come along for the ride. :)

It's from a 2 disk concept album, so what is happening is informed by what came before on the album. It's as if you've walked into act 2 of a play and are trying to understand a character's motivation. Thumbnail sketch summary: Pink has spent his life building up a wall between himself and the outside world, brick by brink, to protect himself from it's harm. By the point of this song, he's the lead singer in a rock band that doesn't want to go on stage any more, and has "management" doping him up so he can cope with performing.

Sir, I know you've spoken before about how instrumental solos can be lost upon you. Umm...just think of them this way. Think of an instrumental solo as someone singing, with an instrument. What do the words mean? Whatever you want/need them to be. Perhaps I am biased. The most passionate kiss I've ever experienced in my lifetime was to the 2nd solo of this song, lol.

Guys he's wired different than almost EVERYONE else. There's no point in trying to get him to like the solo. It's almost like him saying to a blind man " but this Picaso is thought to be one of the best paintings of all time" even though the guy cant see it. He obviously cant feel what that guitar does to the rest of us. If you want to see a good reaction to this version of this song go watch "half life sistah" react to this. She cried for 20 minutes. well worth a watch.

In 1992 I came across a vinyl copy of the Wall that belonged to an uncle. I listened to it over and over, recorded it on cassette to listen to it on the go. I can say that this record literally changed my life. It encouraged me to examine the walls in my own life that were keeping me from connecting with other people. I had to be the judge and decide to keep the walls up or..."tear down the walls....tear down the walls..." I chose the later. To see someone listen to it and just smile makes me glad, lets me know there are people that feel it too.

A lot of Pink Floyd songs require patience. They make you wait just a liiiiitle bit longer than when your mind tells you something should happen, if that makes sense. Anyway, patience is definitely a virtue when listening to their music. Also, let your mind go with the hypnotic rhythms of their songs because there's a lot going on under the surface. If you want something that's shorter try One Of These Days from the Pulse concert. It's a banger.

It is so true that you don't just listen to Pink Floyd, you experience it. This is probably my favorite PF song. Between the melody and lyrics, you can get lost and forget things bothering you whether it be physical or mental. As others have said, Roger Waters was given an injection to ease abdomen cramps which later turned out to be hepatitis right before going on stage. It reminded him of how he felt as a child when he was sick with a high fever. Instead of trying to read the lyrics while listening, just lay back and take it all in.

Your interpretation of the song lyrics is pretty much the interpretation I had until I got the Blu-Ray of the move "The Wall" a few years ago and listened to the commentary with Roger Waters, who was the bass player and wrote the lyrics for this song. This was inspired by an incident in a concert during the 1970s when Waters had food poisoning (or some other illness that gave him painful nausea) and he wasn't sure if he would be able to play the concert. They called in a local doctor who came to the hotel, checked him out to be sure there wasn't something serious (like appendicitis) and then gave him a shot that was a mixture of pain killers and stimulants that let him go on with the concert. He said that during that whole show he felt like an observer within his own body--present, but not really there--a combination of his illness, the pain killers, and the stimulants all working together. In the film, the song is positioned to tell a slightly different story for the fictional character of "Pink" (the protagonist), although the events of the song still take place when Pink is being prepared to go play a concert as the leader of his band. I will echo some sentiments of being a little disappointed that you didn't get caught up in the solo, but to each his own, right? I have often thought that this concert (or at least one Pink Floyd concert) should be the first one that is rendered for a fully-immersive VR experience, and that when the technology like a Star Trek holodeck is perfected, a Pink Floyd show should be the first concert rendered in that format. I say that because attending a Pink Floyd concert is a multi-sensory experience. While the musicians themselves don't dance or caper around the stage, there are practical effects, pyrotechnics, lasers, and lighting effects that literally transport you (along with the music) to some special unique dimension of space, time, and mental state that is unlike any other place in the multiverse. You never just go to the show--you experience the show. It's the closest thing to magic I have ever experienced. Other friends have described it as a "religious experience."

This song has always hit me very, *very* deeply. To me, this always felt like a song about incredibly deep depression, where you've gotten to the point where you've given up on attempting to feel anything, because the only thing feelings bring you is pain. At that point it becomes *much* easier to just shut down and go, as the song describes, "comfortably numb" since feeling anything takes more effort than you feel capable of putting into anything, and which feels pointless since the only outcome to making the attempt is to make things worse. The problem is, once you're into that kind of mental space, getting *out* of it can be incredibly difficult, or indeed nearly impossible. So this song always felt to me like someone trying to force themselves to feel *something* and break through that internal wall and try and interact with the world again, while at the same time hearing that voice in the back of your head telling you that making that attempt is a *terrible* idea, and being numb is at least *safe* since it won't make things worse. I've been there. It's hard. So *incredibly* hard. You may be protecting yourself from *new* pain, but you're also existing in a world where *everything* is painful, and you need one of those pinpricks to remind you that there is a reason to feel. Hearing this song used to literally bring me to tears and bawling like a 2-year-old told he can't have ice cream. Even now, easily 25+ years later, it's still not easy to listen to. But to everyone out there who may *be* in that "comfortably numb" space, let me reassure you that there are good, positive reasons to break out and feel again. That voice in the back of your head lies, and isn't your friend. It's worth it to make the effort, no matter the pain it causes you. It may take you years and years, but it is *worth it* to fight that fight. To this day I have to continually fight against letting myself slide back into this mindset, and it can be harder than almost *anything* you do in life. But it's worth it. Believe me, as someone who's been there. Please.

This song is easier to understand for natural-born addicts. Addicts find life itself painful, anxious, uncomfortable. Getting high is the medicine for this dis-ease with life. The highest you can get is comfortably numb. Not good, but better than the alternative. I totally get your indifference to long guitar solos. That's how I feel about rap music.

lyrics meaning : In an interview released in the 80s, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing.

Roger Waters wrote the lyrics. While many people thought the song was about drugs, Waters claims it is not. The lyrics are about what he felt like as a child when he was sick with a fever. As an adult, he got that feeling again sometimes, entering a state of delirium, where he felt detached from reality. He told Mojo magazine (December 2009) that the lines, "When I was a child I had a fever/My hands felt just like two balloons" were autobiographical. He explained: "I remember having the flu or something, an infection with a temperature of 105 and being delirious. It wasn't like the hands looked like balloons, but they looked way too big, frightening. A lot of people think those lines are about masturbation. God knows why."

It’s about Roger waters (no longer in the band in this show) he was very Unwell before a show and the doctor gave him a shot of painkiller to get him on stage and it’s how he was feeling during the experience. Pink floyd grew very disenchanted with the music industry and the appalling way artists were treated by their record labels. Have a cigar is the most obvious expression of this sentiment.

Yes. Some people focus too much on “it’s about drugs!” and miss the meaning of the song. This is what he said: "I was getting ready to do a gig there, and I had some stomach bug. Terrible, terrible stomach cramps," the 73-year-old bassist recalled. "We had a doctor come into the hotel and say, 'Well, we can take care of that.' "And he gave me a shot, and to this day I don't know what it was. But it's not something I would ever recommend giving to a human being. It came out of a dart that felt like it was used to tranquilize an elephant. And we did the whole show, and I was barely able to stand. And that's where the term 'comfortably numb' came out of. Though obviously the song developed in a different direction."

PF has been renowned for their live performances and embrace of cutting edge technology. The song is from their concept album which is decidedly difficult. You are spot on that this is about corporate interests and "Dr Feelgoods' managing the musician to keep him playing. This band's music really does need to be embraced by experiencing the entirety of the musical composition. It seems most people no longer have time for that so pieces like this cannot be fully appreciated. The band members never saw themselves as front men--only as musicians. In this clip, you are experiencing musicians in late middle age at the height of their craft.

As the story goes, the members of Pink Floyd were burnt out by the rock n' roll stardom they had been catapulted to through albums like Dark Side of the Moon. Eventually the roaring crowds blurred into one and they became disillusioned by the fandom. Roger Waters in particular (the lyrical mastermind behind their greatest works) was especially in a dark place and much of the album and subsequent film are almost a biographical look into his life. Water's father actually did serve in WW2 and was killed in battle, leaving a mark of trauma on the tormented rockstar. And really, thats why the Wall and especially songs like Confortably Numb resonate with us so much; it's the reason why the words are so striking and solos so soul piercing. The Wall was created from a dark and visceral place; it's pain and suffering imbued into every lyric and riff, and an outpouring of raw human emotion. We connect with it because we have all experienced it and can empathize with it. For myself, the guitar solo of this song speaks to me in ways that words could never even begin to. It's brilliance, it's poetry, it's beauty and tragedy, and its the human experience all at once.
