Let's Play Diablo 2 - Paladin HELL Difficulty Guided Playthrough

Hello everyone!
This is part 3 of the Diablo 2 Guided Playthrough for the Paladin! Chat voted on my twitter ( / mrllamasc ) and chose this as the next playthrough.
We will be playing a zealot that transforms into a hammerdin. Normal, Nightmare, and Hell are all planned, however if things go well we might consider going after Ubers as well :D

Im doing my first playthrough of hell with a paladin. I was full offensive on normal and nightmare and was struggling big time when I got to Hell level. I reset my stats to what you have and it saved my life!! Thank you SOOOOOO much!!!

@@aleefmohammed244 yeah it's definitely a fun game. Hell is definitely going to test you. I recommend you have good residences going into it and also ways to handle immunities.

I hope that this will become a series! Whenever I look up a guide all I get is high level characters with end game gear. But this... Not only from scratch but you also discussing the alternatives since no guarantee that we find the same items as you:) Really want to see more characters, like Assassin, Sorc...even Barb:D Keep up the good work:)

ALEX! Please spend more time farming! please! An extra 45 minutes or more in each difficulty, the best part of these is that we all have poorly geared charecters and we get to compare our drops with yours! In the barb playthrough you spent HOURS farming and it was SO MUCH FUN! Seriously Llama, please don't rush these playthroughs. Do more of the quests and do a lot more farming encourage people to play the game how it is supposed to be played, not like speedrunners:) also the girlfriend wants to see you do a Bowazon next. That would force you to farm and have a longer play through it would be so fun!

But that’s the beauty of Diablo, even with this basic gear he doesn’t need to farm to beat the game with a hammerdin. Farming would just be a waste of time (even if it could be enjoyable)

Also he does mention on many spots that you could farm for this or that and make this or that easier. I like to see it as under gear as possible because it gives you strategies in case your farming doesn't yield that one thing you feel you need. I have been able to complete the game with a Necro and a Sorcie thanks to lots of the strategies I saw in these playthroughs. Honorable mention to something simple and it is to just skip something you can't deal with. I never realised when I was little how optional so much of the game is.

I played this game for years, and was pretty good, I did Uber runs and could farm just about any spot with my Zon or Sorc. Watching these videos completely changed how I view the game, from not building defense, to players command breakpoints at odd numbers. Learned so much, gonna download d2 again and bask in the nostalgia.

Thank you for doing these runs Alex! I am absolutely loving them and my girlfriend is actually trying D2 because of them. She is struggling with the pace they are very quick runs but she doesn't ever play video games so the fact that she is playing a game especially my all time favorite game is amazing. Please do a Bowazon next because new players (especially women) love Bowazons she is really hoping you do one next and start spending another hour or more farming in each difficulty. I'm telling you man you farming for gear is the best part of the runs. It's so fun farming with you when we both have bad gear and we can compare our drops to yours!

Watching this series makes me wonder if you would do "bite-size" guides for all sorts of different specs. Like a 5-ish minute overview of how to do different main builds on a class. For example i'm really into zeal paladin, what would make or break a zealadin/zealot, what skills to go for in normal, nightmare, hell etc. Same for trap assassin/martial arts. Maybe those videos would be way bigger than I think, but you could just lightly brush over the skill builds, what runewords and uniques to aim for.

BOWAZON NEXT, PLEASE!! My girlfriend wants to see you do a Bowazon next. That would force you to farm and have a longer play through which would be so fun. We have NEVER seen you play a Bowazon before that would be a very entertaining and difficult guided playthrough. The best guide so far had been the Barb because the videos were so much longer and you spent so many more hours farming. Seriously Alex the best part of these is farming for gear on our poorly geared charecters together with you. With a Bowazon you can't just beat the game on nitemare and hell without getting a merc and gearing him and taking care of him and farming for good enough gear. Please do this Llama I promise you NO ONE will be upset if we get to watch you play through Hell with a Bowazon and spend hours farming for viable gesr together. It's so fun playing the characters on my computer and having your guides playing on my phone while we basically play together, but I really wish you would slow down by a lot and I can't say this enough but spend a couple hours at least farming in each difficulty with us!:)

Yeah, I really hope he will! A bowazon playthrough isn't the fastest but in my opinion is one of the most fun ones. The farming for gear is not that much though. There are a lot of easy to make runewords that help enough, since you'll always be going for fire and/or cold damage because farming for physical damage would take months and attack rating is a nightmare in and off itself and you'll be freezing mobs and you add pierce in nightmare, so you don't even need to worry too much about attack speed or getting frozen yourself. You'll get enough faster attack speed from cheap runewords anyway and they're all for 2 or 3 sox bows you can shop in act1 normal. The only 4 sox runeword that might be of interest are Harmony if you find a Ko to get +3 to +6 to valkyrie without having to add skills and get a lot of extra damage, but even then, Melody also uses a Ko rune and only needs 3 sockets and might be better because it adds +3 to amazon skills and 20 increased attack speed and knockback. But a simple ort eth gives more attack speed and also gives faster run walk and easily gets you through hell and with freezing arrow, knockback isn't all that important. And maybe Llama could be nice to us and not tele with this char. It's hard enough to switch weapons and not die in hell with a paladin. The amazon handles like a schoolbus under water.

thanks for pro-strats mr lama! ladder just reset i was building a smiter for ubers but this video inspired me to respec into hammerdin when i started to struggle in nm a1. i can always respec back to smiter when i'm higher level and have some gear :)

You should stamp mark the highlights in your gameplays... Like when you find crucial items, respec, turn the skill tree path in the desirable direction, or just have some GOOD ADVICE. Then you will provide us with the ultimate playthrough ever!!!!!! I have never played Paladin in my life up until now, and I have to confess, it is a tough bastard to master...Concentration, Redemption, Hammerz, and Smite, I USE THEM ALL!!! Positioning is the very fundament of Hammerdin gameplay. When you learn how hammers work and what distance they are traveling, everything falls into place. I had a blast purging all demons and undead in Hell ACT 1, but damn those level designers for ACT 2... Particular those who worked on Maggot Lair...

MrLlamaSC maybe for example talk about early game we invested some points in resist fire , holy fire and 1 point in Zeal. Then at level 18 respec into hammer throws. Farm for stealth runes etc2. Keep gear that have 2 sockets. Most of our stats will go to vitality etc2.

My dream for a Paladin is to make a 2-handed paladin (2h sword preferred) that can play from normal through hell without a shield, without holy shield, and without twinking? I love the way two handed swords look on paladins. I know shields are iconic for paladins, but I like 2h weapons.

You can throw on Cleansing Aura to take off a curse rather quickly, probably faster even than going to town for most acts. Pally OP (Works better the more +skills you have)

Ye... Another thing I always forget to tell you... In singleplayer back in the day, 2003-2008, Summoner was always in the same spot. Look for the path with pillars and balconies... So I always avoided teleports, towers and always knew where to look. Don't know if that's the case with some of the newer updates and patches.

That holy bolt strategy for baal minions wave 2 doesn't seem to work anymore. At holy bolt level 5 it doesn't even do enough damage to out damage the enemies' passive healing.

Currently playing a Javazon. One of the highlights was my Duriel Normal drops. Sanders gloves, Insenharts helm, arctic belt, rare maul, and a rare eth brandistock. The only useful one ended up being the sanders gloves, but still sick to get all those (instead of tp scrolls....). Currently beat normal and debating just jumping into NM, Baal runs are easy with charged strike, so tempted to do a few more, but would maybe be best to just move on. My plugY install didn't seem to work, so may copy my save file after I get it fixed. That's one of the main reasons I'd want a D2 remastered, Even just a GoG version; it is harder than it should be to just play the game. Windowed full screen can be annoying too, especially when the cursor goes outside the window. I tried glide wrapper, and it worked for a while, but I had to restart my pc after each session if I wanted to play again. Starting with poison jav had me going outside the window border often since you don't aim at enemies when attacking; in the end I just respecced into power strike to avoid the annoyance. I had a MF sorc on a plugY install a little while back, hopefully I can still find that save file; I think I made a copy somewhere of the shared stash and the char file. I had a windforce and some other goodies I found on that character file.

I'd say best tactic for Wave 2 Baal is to kill the minons, RIP them with the level 30 Aura and then drag the Mummies out by cutting off their Line of Sight with the pillars. Once they lose LoS they will chase you. Then drag them out and charge back in. Alternatively you drag the minions out first. Then drag the big guys out after if you don't have/want to spend a point on the Aura.

If you’re playing hell hardcore in the tombs I’d recommend resetting till there aren’t any summoners. Took me like 10 resets but damn those jabronies were hella annoying. I tried teleporting with them/scarabs and almost had a heart attack when I barely made it out alive. -_-

Just started Nightmare on my pally on my first D2 play through. Up to 85 FR 75 75 75. Using Malice + 4 Diamond Pally Shield for bosses and using double spirit in my other weapon and shield slots for killing random mobs. Not sure what I should use for the rest of my gear, just trying to not overlap with my current stats.

Inmunity are op in this game, look how easy it is for Hammerdin compared to other classes, for sure one of the things i hate the most about D2. I dont know why they didnt go for high res monsters like 90% dmg reduced, but 100%? Come on!

Better question is are immunities OP or are hammerdins OP? Lots of people in D2 hate the hammerdin because it's so much easier than the other chars, rather than hating the other chars because they can't kill like the hammerdin. It's interesting!

I just think difficulty through inmmunities is lazy design, imagine as a new player you go to Hell with your awesome fire Sorc that you are loving some much and all of a sudden you cant kill a Fallen, it just feels wrong in my opinion.

That dude said that he spent 3 hours getting only to countess is probably fighting with no merc. I remember times when i was a kid, i was playing through entire normal with only merc +level 1 curses because of no respec, and it wasn't horrible or whatever. Barbarian merc wipes 99% of mobs with life tap and fhr.

My current HC char is a hammerdin. Had my HC sorc die to Mephisto after defeating hell ancients, had my HC necro get one shotted by some might+extra strong boss. How do you play with max block? Do you turn off running, or is it more like a layer of safety when you hammer away? I'm now in act 2 Hell near the end, I'm going to farm the countess to get a Lum rune for Smoke. BTW, double Spirit is awesome. EDIT: Guardian-ed him, my first Guardian YAYAYAYAYAY!!!

It is from a later patch indeed. I guess, many players used mods to make runes easier to spot between all the white items, so Blizzard decided to officially change it because it really makes sense to give runes a different colour than a random common item.

I just found boots for my Hammerdin, Gore Rider War Boots with 30% fast run, 15% crushing blow, 15% deadly strike, and 10% open wounds. I'm currently using Sander's boots for the 40% faster run and 5 strength and 10 dex, should I switch? Can those proc on hammers?

My question has always been : How do you manage to find/make items socketed? I know Larzuk does it, but you have no control over how many are put into the item

Just run around killing people. Prioritize people without any special things (avoid champions and bosses). Get rid of any MF you have as well. Only low tier white items are good for sockets. You can also use shops to find stuff with sockets. Just leave town and return to refresh inventory. Again, only white items will have it. Blue and above wont. Also play on players 1. You want a worse loot table. Basically; No MF. Players 1 difficulty. Can farm shops for socketable items. Only white items will have sockets.

I agree completely about sacrificing boots or any gear slot for just 1 cool attribute or bonus. Hope D4 does something similar. Level 22 boots being potentially the best gear option for an end game character *muah*

I was actually thinking when watching this you would actually fight all of the monsters and give me nput to people who are struggling with certain mobs. The dolls that explode almost killed my Hardcore Paladin. You just run past everything. What kind of playthrough is this?

I thought blessed hammer does bonus dmg to undead, so shouldnt he be able to kill em with hammers? I thought thats why Hammerdin was considered the best in the game? Can anyone clear me up if that has been changed or if I'am remebering it wrong?

So I'm struggling with Zeal Paladin in hell difficulty. My resistances are decent (lightning and cold are low, around 20, but fire and poison are both maxed out) at least to me, a noob. I've maxed out zeal and sacrifice and fanatacism, and I'm leveling Vengeance to deal with physical immune bastards. But everything does so much damage! I literally died to two undead that were cold enchanted minions because they damaged me down from full health while I was in my Zeal animation. Do you have any recommendations as to how I, a melee character, can make it through hell? I'm stumped.

crushing blow and lifeleech helps a lot. if youre having trouble with mana burn, play around with damage taken goes to mana. . if youre using plugy try lawbringer for your weapon. relatively cheap runeword that carries you through hell. once you get an exile youre basically immortal
