personally what i think they should do for the god tats on the players face is only make them visible temporary when you are fighting or angry, they should never show up and just stay on your face, because nobody likes putting an ugly tat only to be plagued by that ugly tat the entire game, it's like wearing silly or dumb looking armor for the amazing stats they give you, like in bethesda games lol. the mask of clavicus vile in skyrim is ugly as hell, nobody wants to wear that ugly thing just to use it's stats, bethesda needs to create a kind of transmog system in their games when it comes to clothing items and armor, so you can wear whatever style of clothing and armor you wish while getting the stats of the real armor that is ugly, but you can't see how ugly that armor is because the transmog de-uglifies it allowing the player to choose their style. but anyway this AVOWED game also needs to do this as well.

It WILL get 60fps but not at launch. Because series s will not have 60fps for launch, series x is NOT ALLOWED to have 60fps for launch either then. It will be added as a "bonus" or "update" later, with little to no marketing and series x will get it first and nobody will care. Then series s will get it next, it will be laughed at for how awful it looks at 60fps on series s, but its okay then..... because nobody will care about Avowed at that point. This is EXACTLY how it went down with Starfield. They CANNOT show the game before launch running at 60fps on series s. It will destroy any momentum the game barely had. So because series s exists, you can't be "sold" on Avowed until roughly August next year........... by the time the sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsuhima is launched........ with a 60fps option at launch on standard PS5.

One of my biggest questions about the game is definitely dialogue. For me the high points of the pillars games were seeing how I could talk my way out of different situations, rather than just fighting. I probably talked my way out of the majority of the boss fights in those games. That's an aspect that I REALLY appreciated about them. I like when games actually make me think about what I'm doing, rather than "kill bad thing, because we say it bad", and honestly I don't think I've ever played a game that does that better then POE 1 and 2.

It's a great game, though not for noobs. It's a tough game if you aren't familiar with real time with pause. If you like BG2, and can beat BG2, then I recommend Pillars 1. POE2 is much easier and has turned based, so if you think 1 may be too tough, it's worth checking out 2. Especially as Avowed seems to continue parts of the story from 2.

I was excited when I heard Obsidian was making their own version of "Elder Scrolls" and I still am, this game gets better with every new preview I watch and can't wait to get this bad boy! This isn't a fully open world game. Neither is it a massive experience. Starfield might have failed in its literal exploration of the world(s). But between all the factions and side quests it was still a massive game with tons of fun content (albeit mixed in with boring stuff like the 1000 procedural planets). This game will be a lunch sized experience compared to the elder scrolls' five course dinner extravaganza. The way I see it, it's cool that this game exists and that we'll eventually get an elder scrolls 6 as well.

The cities alone shit on elder scrolls, but the depth of the factions motivations are superior, there is actual colonialism going on rather than just Nords mad at an Empire...an Empire that doesn't really do much governing in game, whereas you can see how all the different governments function in Pillars firsthand. Pillars's world simply fucks and it has a lot to do with Joshua Sawyers background and obsession with history. Matty and many KZbinrs (sometimes not even gaming channels) use Oblivion and Skyrim music in their videos because it's nostalgic and goat tier.

It does go deep on exploration, questing and creating your own character / story. Skyrim is also huge in terms of content. So this game might beat Skyrim in some areas (that Skyrim wasn't designed to do) while remaining in Skyrim's massive shadow as this will be a lunch size experience compared to Skyrim's five course dinner.

It is always best to wait and see. Previews and early reviews don't always tell the whole story. As for me, I would have preferred something like the two Pillars of Eternity games. I don't like action combat and can only tolerate it if it is extremely easy, so as reviews start to appear, I'll be looking closely to see if there is a super-easy difficulty level that turns combat into a non-issue. Naturally, I was disappointed to see Pillars of Eternity morphed into an action game, but if combat can be effectively bypassed, I might enjoy other aspects of the game. Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have its problems, but its accessibility and difficulty customization are about the best I've seen. Seeing that combat could be completely nerfed is what finally convinced me to buy it and give it a try. Avowed looks like it might be better than Veilguard in many other ways. I'm happy to see that the game is using a proper dialogue system, as opposed to Veilguard, which uses a dumbed down Fallout 4-style system. Hopefully, the writing will be better too, but we'll have to wait and see on that. Out of the big February releases (assuming that they all release on schedule), Avowed is the only one I'm likely to follow closely, though I see that a new Legend of Heroes game is coming, so I'll probably take a look at that too. The combat system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is far too frustrating for me, so the sequel is almost certainly a game I should pass on. In March, I'll take a close look at Tales of the Shire.

Don't get me wrong, loved the first game, but Warhorse's track record tells me that KCD2 will need some work after launch before it's ready for showtime proper. I'm so, so, so glad they have the option to play it in 3rd person. I HATE 1st-person games. They give me motion sickness. I don't even like the way they feel or look, the weird arms just floating out in front of you, like they're detached. First person sucks, in my humble opinion. So the 3rd person, thank you! ALL modern games need to have the option for people to choose which they prefer. There's no reason, in this day and age, with the huge budgets games are given, that a toggle between perspectives shouldn't be a basic, fundamental option. I was really worried that Avowed would be 1st person only. I'm so glad I'll be able to play and enjoy this new fantasy RPG! (Hopefully they'll continue polishing the 3rd-person animations so they feel less floaty, but regardless, I prefer it over 1st person.)

I like a lot of flavor text based on background. It gives better replayability with new characters. You'll hear a lot of different dialog in each character. That's important for helping it to feel fresh each time.

the footage about avowed circling the internet solemnly clears the doubt and worries i had for years. the game has a revamp in terms of combat and feedback, (with the handedness it looks similar to Vermintide) and it looks engaging on top of PoE RPG writing, setting, and lore. im excited and i wasnt even aware theyre adding third person mode, so its clearly nailing the coffin of Veilguard. it's cool to see Outer Worlds formula runs well for a fantasy RPG and looks like ill enjoy Avowed lot more.

Matty, ive been a regular viewer and subscriber since the start of the fallout 4 days. I’ve spent over a decade watching your videos weekly (multiple times a week at that) We have almost the exact same taste in games and there have only been a very few small things ive disagreed on your takes with. You’re my favorite games journalist/youtuber because its essentially like watching myself talk about these games before i can try them. I always know we’re going to be on the same page. Ive even gotten into jrpgs because of you and I’m rotating between new games, my backlog, and the trails series - which I would’ve never tried without you. And i LOVE them. Also, I’ve listened to every single dd/ddu episode and used to listen to HAM a lot as well. With all that said…i am so disappointed that you STILL haven’t played pillars of eternity lol. A lot of the pillars fan base says poe1 is the better game, mostly because of the writing and atmosphere. Some people dont like the pirate theme on poe2. However, i like the pirate theme. But more importantly, while i do think the writing itself is a small step below pillars 1, pillars 2s writing has a very different approach. Its much more digestible and nowhere near as long winded, and doesn’t give me reading fatigue that the first game does. (I have dyslexia so reading can be a chore when its that long winded) The reason i think Pillars 2 is one of the best crpgs (hell, even rpgs in general) of all time is because of 1) the refined combat which works great in both turn based and real-time-with-pause. I truly believe that you should play whichever one you find more fun. But there are a few things to take note of. First the game was made with real-time-with-pause in mind, and even though the turn based is great, battles that would take under a minute in rtwp take several minutes in turn based. And there are a LOT of battles. It makes your play time skyrocket. Second, I’m not crazy about rtwp combat - but pillars 2 has the best, most refined rtwp combat of any crpg. It also actually feels chunky with good aduio/visual feedback which ive never seen any other crpg/rtwp combat game pull off the way pillars 2 combat does. So even if you like turn based more like i do, trying pillars 2s rtwp combat is so good it might actually make you change your mind on it. Also, there are some genuinely fantastic boss fights in pillars 2. Ive never had more fun with crpg bosses than in that game. They’re phenomenal. The gear progression is also only rivaled by divinity original sin 2. Pillars 2 has lots of fun uniques and legendaries to find - which leads me to my second point 2) pillars 2 has amazing exploration!!!!! My favorite thing in all of gaming is meaningful exploration. Thats why bgs games, botw/totk, elden ring, dragons dogma, etc all hit so hard for me. I love finding unique, hand crafted loot in unique, hand crafted dungeons. - and pillars 2 does this better that any crpg. Exploring random islands in your ship, finding a dungeon with a hidden side boss and getting a legendary/unique piece of gear feels SO good. Pillars 2 is ALL about the side content. Going off and finding sode things by your own exploration is amazing, but the different factions and their quest, along woth companions and their quest, plus regular side quests leave you with an amazing experience not found in other crpgs that might’ve been reviewed better. Pillars 2 is one of, if not THE most under appreciated (c)rpgs of all time. Matty I implore you to play it. If you ever do me (and yourself) a single favor as a long time fan who has never met you, it would just be for your to sit down and give pillars 2 the attention it deserves from you. I have no doubt that you will love it and that it will block your socks off. Sincerely, one of your biggest fans and most loyal supporters

I agree about the design of the characters, I don't like it either. But we'll see. I'm definitely excited about Avowed and much more than about Kingdom Come 2, even though KC is made by developers from my country. It simply doesn't have magic, so Avowed wins without competition.

Its just the color. In real life the dark ages still had color, didnt make the things haappening there less horrible. The original trailer looked more like some areas in the original game that takes place in Dyrwood so they probably werent fully settled in how the land in Avowed looked on the first trailer, just that they were making a Pillars of Eternity first person rpg

I guess as someone that hasn't played POE and doesn't have an attachment to it, I found it a bit disappointing. I also think it's fair to have a different vibe for different games in a series, especially since it's a different genre, with a partially different audience. Many other series have pulled that off. I'll have to play it though of course.

Might be a similar issue as with animators for mega-budget Hollywood movies, the industry has become so big that there's just not enough talent to go around. It's not a lost art, but more and more of the hyper-talented artists are leaving the major studios and they have their choice of what they want to commit to. In the mean time, the industry has trained many many more people for these positions to keep up with hungry demand, but the talent pool overall is much more diluted.

Good level design is level design that clearly conveys to the player their options, so yes, while you probably were being sarcastic, it is a staple of quality level design to use consistent environmental language.

I understand an explosive barrel being used to show the player that breakable walls exist, but I doubt there is going to be a barrel in front of EVERY breakable wall. In a game where a handed crafted bomb, explosive spell, or explosive arrow could be a part of your arsenal, that would be dumb.

I am not currently convinced, specifically by the $70 price tag. There needs to be a lot more game than obsidian usually provides for the price on offer. Maybe the value is there, but they haven't shown it. If the game is good but short, I will still likely wait for a sale. Like a 25% off sale, minimum.
