180hp R1 Go Kart Passes a Cop and runs away(131mph)

COOL INFO: Kart was bought for $5,000 plus shipping. It has had several owners. Previous owner from Georgia owned kart for literally two weeks then re-listed on eBay citing it was the most ridiculous thing he'd ever driven and there weren't many places to use it. Originally this kart had 6 wheels (google images R1 go kart). It was drag raced and crashed due to the front wheels coming off the ground. One owner told the story of trying to get the major tire manufacturers to produce a tire that would allow the kart to attempt to go over 200mph and not blow up (find video below in description of tire blowing up with speedo reading 181mph). 150mph or higher is reached in fourth gear, there are six gears :). Kart has been sold and the new owner is putting paddle shifters and other goodies on it. The local police have had two driver suspects. Both suspects have been harassed/threatened by police. They think they know who the driver was, they're wrong. He still remains a mystery.

2005 Yamaha R1 Sport Bike engine in a Beisse Shifter Kart. Around 180 HP, weighs about 220lbs. Previous owner had Kart up to 181 mph before a tire blew out. Using GoPro Hero High Def camera with adhesive mount.
NOTE: The rear tires are worn out so the driver didn't do anything to crazy. The ending was edited out to protect the driver.

When the R1 came out I reserved one having seen it at a bike show. After 4 weeks, of the people who bought an R1 on reserve in my area, I was the only guy still with a licence and a bike. I passed a cop car doing 187mph. I'm not even sure they saw me, but I rode that bike home & I sold it the next day. In 1998 the R1 was not on the same planet as normal bikes.

I remember them well. I was 16. My neighbor, who had raced dirt bikes all his life and could really ride, owned one for a summer. He sold it and went back to a cbr600. Shit got real fast in the 90s. Bikes and cars too. Zx 12, busas, r1, c5 vettes and camaro, supras and turbo eclipse/eagle talons, vr4, 300zx. There was a mustang cobra, the supercharged one, that outran everything in town for awhile. Everything except liter bikes, of course. Cheap speed.

Wild. I'd never attempt to go that fast in a kart. Too many variables. On that size of tire, all it takes is one small pothole and you're boned. At that speed it would probably bend something and send you wobbling out of control. I used to race karts, and honestly I'd rather crash a car than a kart at those speeds. I used to race gokarts but on an oval and not a shifter kart. You feel like you're going twice as fast when you're an inch off the ground compared to being in a car. My cart with the restrictor plate made it top out at around 70 mph so I cant imagine what this dude is experiencing 😂

In the late 80's I bought some used cart wheel tyres hubs and the rest I welded up from mild steel 2" square box for the frame, copied a race cart dimensions and bolted an old KX400 2-stroke motor. Scariest and most fun I ever had on the road, but it chewed itself to pieces stripping the custom rear sprocket setup and cracking and twisting the frame and engine mounts, and deafening to the ears. Donuts, drifts, burnouts, 180 lock turns, it was a blast, but nowhere to ride it except illegally on the roads. I took it to newly developed roads on empty land estates with no traffic was my solution. Surprising my home made simple rear axle v-pully belt brake system worked good and it was able to fully lock up. Same as this video mine was always trying wanting it's back end to pass the front and was twitchy on the steering when the power band kicked in. Looking back I was fortunate and sold it before my luck ran out. They are nasty leg breakers at the very least.

I did something similar back in the '70's with a competition YZ 360 motor. We had to extend the frame 10" and push the wheels out 3" on each corner. I've got no idea what the top speed was but I shifted into 3rd at around 75mph. It was a little slow on the light but once it got going and into the powerband it got scary real quick. We learned that an extra 50lbs made it much easier to control. The guy I sold it to made a 4-wheel drive go cart out of it. When he got done it wouldn't do 50mph but it was able to climb a mountain. He would follow us almost everywhere we went on our dirt bikes.

No, I think Australia has nice wide roads and plenty of sunshine. I'm from the UK. Here every town is linked to ever other by about 10 roads, most are narrow, twisty, packed with traffic and it rains a lot. There are motorways (multi-lane highways), but the top speed allowed is 70MPH and there are plenty of police and enforcement camera's. The only decent places to drive, or live, are Wales and Scotland.
