The very best steam locomotive whistles ever made were on the Norfolk & Western Steam Locomotives which they built their own in their Roanoke,Virginia shops. Norfolk & Western was the king of steam locomotives.

That was an epic and badass start on the 611 and boy she was screaming with that whistle for the crossing. Engineer must have had the Johnson bar all the way in the corner and probably put the throttle towards the top of the cab roof.

Thank you so much for this share. I finally got to see 611 in 1994, she's such a beautiful locomotive.

RFW819 I agree with you. The Norfolk & Western J Class number 611 streamlined 4-8-4 steam locomotive is the most beautiful of all steam locomotives that pulled passenger trains and is my most favorite steam locomotive of all time.

There are so many pictures and records of #611, but being able to _feel_ her rumble past is such a different experience.

My brother & myself checked out 611 during the NRHS trips out of Atlanta, then went to see her pull her last excursions that Dec. 3, 1994. I still have clinkers they cleaned out of her firebox in Chattanooga. The return trip was a night run. That was like a Link experience. I saw 1218 in St. Louis under steam in 1990. I heard that if the Museum wanted to restore 611, NS would consider more trips.

Indeed they do. A couple, for sure. The whistle on 611 currently is from one of the sister Js.
@thunderbird19214 жыл бұрын
There are 3-4 whistles that are confirmed to be authentic, one is currently on 611, two are in private hands and I think the fourth was actually owned by NKP 765's crew last I heard (it even ran with the J whistle on one of its excursions a few years ago, bewildering/surprising many rail fans).
