A major problem with the game was that since Kratos wanted to avoid war, it held back the narrative. And that it was an Atreus game. I wanted to only play as kratos. The story felt like a dlc tbh. Edit- I still think it was a good game but it would've been awesome if we got a trilogy. In this game Kratos should have slowly returned to his roots. And next one should have had Kratos fully change or move on. They somehow could've accomplished the "be better" message they were going for. This could've been a masterpiece of a trilogy. I think most people are disappointed because we were expecting gow 3 level of action. It's potential was mostly wasted imo.

the problem I faced with the game was that they decided to make extremely boring cutscenes like that Angroboda sequence extend to 3 hours and decided to make the "big boss fights" not even 30 mins (final thor fight). Saying that the game should've been 2 games isn't an excuse for this one to be poor, I expected to fight gods not pick up fruits for 3 hours straight. It's extremely disappointing. The intro of the game really feels "God of War" but right from the ironwood sequence the game becomes just dialogue, no big fights, all boss fights after the first thor boss fight have barely any "craziness" like the baldur fight from 2018. Also i expected kratos to unleash the "Ghost of Sparta" in this game but it was actually quite the opposite, I know he's matured but being violent to defend was what he was doing in the previous game, but in this game we see not even 25% of his true strength, only 3 seconds when he punches the teeth out of thor, but nowhere else, when the game is supposed to be the end of the world. Such a huge letdown. A 6/10 game for me. 😢

those flaws shouldn't turn this game from a 10/10 to a 6/10. I agree with all the points but that rating is way off imo. The mechanics and visuals of the game are still amazing, the voice acting is superb, the score is great, and it's a fully complete game with no bugs. That's not a 6/10 in 2022.

@@strictlypineapple9308 Clearly don’t know how to write a good story. Him refusing to unleash his anger even when he needs to isn’t a character development. It’s a regression. He should’ve learned to use it and either way, nobody wants to see a calm kratos wether they admit it or not. The game should’ve been loki being kidnapped, kratos going rage mode and tearing through everyone only to fail and be killed before he can finish in front of loki (probably by Thor), leading to the third game which should’ve been about an adult loki causing ragnarok, maybe stopping before killing everyone and fully realizing his fathers teachings. It’s one of those games that is great when you’re in the moment. But, like many games, once you’ve had time to sit with it after 100 percent completion, even just a short bit, you can really notice some of it’s flaws. People are just in the honeymoon phase. Same thing happened with Elden Ring and a few months later people started pointing out all it’s flaws as the initial high of a good game wore off.
@kush6846
@kush6846 2 жыл бұрын
The honeymoon phase, that’s clever. I agree though, I really liked playing the game but after finishing it, I sunk about 35 hours into the game and did a majority of the side content, and I can barely remember a single side quest or moment that really wowed me, aside from the Thor fight in the beginning. I’m mixed on the game overall. SPOILERS The final part of the game was anticlimactic and kind of predictable, all of the fate and prophecy stuff that the game hammers over and over to build tension doesn’t really amount to anything, and I guess in the future their maybe setting up DLC for Atreus and his adventures while Kratos and his buddies hang out in Midgard. I can’t 100%, a lot of the side content and puzzles are really annoying.

Narratively they handle Kratos and Atreus pretty well but everything else in the story didn’t work for me really. The whole game just felt like sequences of events happening without making a lot of sense. And the moment in the story you’re supposed to care (brok) I did not I’ve a crap. I found it so funny they hinged the emotional weight of the story on a side character who was primarily the comic relief.

Like, come on, just say you haven't played the old GoW games and we'll get it, but don't say Kratos didn't have a heart back then because that is a lie of mythical proportions, only spread by journalists that never played past games and forget damn near all those entries received as high (or higher) acclaim as the 2018 one. I miss the epicness, brutality and simple storytelling of GOW 1-3. I miss alone, quite and determined Kratos. I miss the Greek Pantheon who act like actual mythology gods. I miss the big scale boss fights, when we beat 500 meter mountain-sized Titans as a random NPCs, or beat 100 meter giant Zeus and Ares. instead, we get a family drama with tons of unnecessary complicated storytelling. Less brutality, almost a Disney movie level. Most brutal moment in the game is when we hit Heimdall's head like 3 times, it's a fucking QTE from older games. There are 6 people always revolve around Kratos, talks and talks. Completely reduces the scary aspect of Older games, and since they act and talk like a modern day people it completely destroys the Mythology aspect of the game. Designs are lazy and boring. We get a fat drunk Thor and Odin with american accent. Boss fights are extremely boring. You don't do anything except spamming buttons.

Still no gigantic bosses, still fighting same 5 type of creatures entire game. What's new? A Animal Crossing section where you feed your pet and harvest some fruits...Atreus is still the old annoying brat till the end of the game when he became serious somehow. The build up to Ragnarok is reduced by a cheap Odin fight, remember old game where Zeus got transformation, fights, and a bad ass end? ( They could made a Kratos and Thor team up to stop the gigantic "titan" to stop the Ragnarok. But they not even tried...one big gigantic last fight at least; even that Marvel Avengers got that Sentinel at the end. ) This is just walking simulator, mixed with too many cutscenes and the same repeating words "find Tyr", "Ragnarok", "Loki" and other nonsense like you don't know what you do...the Norse mythology got so many creatures, monsters, titans, empowered gods but they missed the point. game isn't the GOTY, one can say it bluntly, even last game wasn't, liking it doesn't mean it should win the issue for this game is its 50 hours when it should be 20 hours and even then cut the fat of the plot game is average at best game just drags and every time it does it just becomes apparent that the story isn't good story isn't just come cutscenes u like its the some total of it and its pacing and execution which people forget far too often, it isn't a well told story regardless of production values not counting the hand holding nature of it that doesn't trust the player to do anything, that leads to a very boring experience when u are never alone with your thoughts to take in the world or music cause dialogue is every 8 seconds, puzzles mean nothing when they aren't even puzzles but teasers that give the answer right away game is indeed pretentious, it tries so hard to be a movie but it be mediocre if it was cause gaming community has a lower standard than movies, case and point this game the end fight with freya preaching to Odin was cringe and sums up the dynamic of female rep in this game too as overly pure and virtuous to their male counterpart every single time and its cringe once u notice it liking ideas of it doesn't make it good just means u like something bad which is fine given the game's point was broad appeal it would happen but it isn't great even higher difficulties is just dmg sponges and super armor to everyone, just failures of design it shows the low bar of it all, no combat incentives still, no care to weapon play cause no reward for it, just beat enemies, even more button mashing than old era just another brand that lost its identity for "modern audiences" and it sucks its not deeper just melodrama and high production but a far cry to what it used to do well and that audience is screwed if they want that cause nothing does that

If we are to consider the game designer (or designers in this case) as the wizard of oz, working behind the curtains of the game pushing buttons and pulling levers to pace the experience out, then I can say without hyperbole that I saw the game designer's hands working behind the curtains too often. While aspects of the story feel like a breathe of fresh air, aspects of the game itself feel archaic in a real non complimentary way. For example I played through the "look in 2-3 spots before you look in the final spot to find the quest item" rigamarole too many times. And once you add 2-3 combat scenarios into between looking for quest item spots you've basically seen the loop of the game. As someone who enjoyed the story miles more than the combat I found myself getting annoyed by this pattern in the game loop. The game locking this story I enjoyed behind more and more bland combat scenarios and bosses that regularly regenerate their health twice during fights.

I give it a 6/10. Whats sad is that it could have easily been a 10/10 had they done a few things differently. #1- we dont get mjolnir as a weapon- this was the biggest mistake. The hammer should have been key to killing odin, and would have been a general improvement for the game and its replay value. #2- Odin boss fight was generic and underwhelming- Odin is the god of many things because of his vast knowledge, making deception his most commonly used tool in his aresenal. The scrawny elderly form we see him in for most of the game should have been a guise or perceptual distortion to make him appear weak. What should have happened was when we fight him, he drops that illusion and reveals superior asgardian armor, weapons and magic that we have never seen before. That should have been the reason we needed mjolnir to defeat him. #3- underwhelming ragnarok sequence and undelivered plot foreshadowings- the assault on asgard was short and lacking in enemy variety. so many concepts and possibilities were teased and introduced without being expanded upon. For example, surtr doesnt do anything at ragnarok. What was the point of freeing him if theres no tangible payoff? Why didnt loki get to touch the infinite knowledge with that mask odin had? I feel like the devs just got lazy at the end, like they didnt feel like programming these things in because they had already “succeeded”. Very disappointing.

SPOILERS!!! Wonderful and well-articulated review. I agree to almost your every opinion, but i have more things to nag about. Their depictions of Odin and Thor are unique and wonderfully made. By humanizing Thor, that one looming threat since the end of last game, and making him emotionally vulnerable to line up with Kratos' growth as a father, is great writing. But I feel like Odin killing him makes Thor's arc end immaturely and abruptly. Don't get me wrong, I think Odin is absolutely that kind of man who'd kill his child if they outlive their usefulness. But I can't help but think that scene can be handled better and deliver a more satisfying conclusion to Thor. As for Odin, he is depicted as a manipulative man with his way to words and schemes. His mouth's quick but his brain's quicker. That's why I think him breaking disguise and stabbing Brok is kinda forced. ( Though I think Sindri's reaction to Brok's death is really well done, my favourite character arc in this game.) Odin should've had other tricks up his sleeves, not a dagger. And the Odin boss fight is kinda a letdown as well, just a overblown mage fight. No way near the spectacle of 2018's Baldur fight. Also, they've been hinting Kratos' death since last game, and a portion of conflict between him and Atreus in this game stems from this prophecy. But Kratos has never been any where NEAR death in this game. It's especially odd since other prophecy all came true(Atreus saving moon, Heimdall's death, Surtr becoming Ragnarok). Even if they never planned to kill off Kratos, there should've been a perilous scenerio to address this and make audience THINK he's gonna die. There was a internal discussion in the studio about whether the Norse saga should be 2 or 3 games. They ultimately set for 2, so i think that's why story towards the end feel somewhat unbaked. They worked under a tight deadline and COVID, and the rest of the Norse saga was too big to fit into one game. But as you mentioned in the video, if they streamlined the story and made room for the plot development I've mentioned, instead of letting characters going back and forth sprinkled with walking down time that is a bit too long for my taste, the story of Gow Ragnarok could have been phenomenal.

Thanks for watching. I definitely agree that Thor's death happened abruptly without any catharsis, but maybe that was the intent to show how Odin is really the author of everyone's pain. I do wish they gave him a bit more time before he just faded into nothing. Also definitely agree that it was weird that the Kratos death was in the back of our minds and they just decided to rewrite that without any consequence. I feel like this game is similar to Uncharted 4. Still great but I expected them to be more daring. Certain aspects may be debatable , though, but that's my view and I'm sticking to it.

I definitely agree with a lot of this. First, I just wanted to say they wrote Odin really well and Richard Schiff blew it out of the water with the voice acting. But you're right that there's so many spinning plates in the last part of the game that just sort of fall. There's a moment after Surtr agrees to sacrifice himself and Kratos goes, "Oh wait this seems too easy, Odin knew we'd be going to Surtr." And there's no payoff. I mean, they get attacked by some Valkyries but it just seemed like a shoehorned boss battle since there needed to be a boss after a major story beat. So I don't know why they opened up the possibility of Surtr being a trap, since that was in the back of my mind even after Ragnarok kicks off. I agree that Odin revealing himself as Tyr felt a little forced. It also brings into question: Since Odin can't be in two places at once, didn't anyone notice Tyr disappearing for large stretches of time? It just seems like a weird plothole. The story is largely really great and it is extravagant in its production. But it falls a little flat to me since what I largely liked was the story, and the combat, puzzles, etc. are all a little underwhelming.

No no no no NO! Soy boy comments like that are why we get crappy games like this. I don't want to see Kratos cry or be a bitch. I don't even want to see him act human. He's the God of War. 2018s GoW hinted at Kratos evolving but didn't allow it. That's why the game could remain great while expanding on the lore and characters. Thor too. Thor mercilessly killed all the giants, and more. You want him to be a gender studies major. Ugh. I'm gonna stick around for Ghost of Tsushima 2, but if you sissies ruin that too, I'm done with games.

Boss’s are easy as but they’ll just be some cheap any move off a random basic enemy that will 2 shot u. I dont like games that adjust difficulty in this way. Make it technically difficult not cheap. Also i think after games like elden ring have been released this is so basic.

I disagree with the story being all that great at all, the whole general, brainstorm of ideas is simply nothing spectacular, from Thor's character being lackluster, to Odin being a boring villain, the pieces set in this game disappoint. Which is a shame since it could've been so much more, even exclusively talking about characters, Loki/Atreus was played as safe as you could've done it, for someone destined to be a "Trickster God", the writers didn't do anything too interesting. I understand the point was to show how well Kratos is raising him, and not to say they should've made him a complete villain, but that dark side of him from the last game, feels completely dropped here, he has a teenage tantrum, that's about it.Why not make him have a twisted thrill about lying to his father, why not, instead of an open vocal confrontation and the leaving, why not give Atreus more slickness, completely tricking his dad(a lot of the story would need to change ofc), more ambition towards the mask would've been amazing too, he snapped it in half like it was nothing, he's just a really really good boy! The conflict he has with Kratos is fine but also extremely cookie cutter? and not to be too overly critical about it, but, is yet another one of those stories where if characters communicated with each other a bit better, half of it doesn't happen... and you can say it works and I'd agree, since Kratos is not a great talker and has his traumas, but even so, if you wanted to explore Kratos, the man that genocided a whole pantheon out of pure rage and thirst for revenge, this is not what I personally would've expected, and it all comes down to what the main focus of this game was, which is a father-son bonding story. I think that's where it excels undoubtedly, all the interactions with Kratos and Atreus are great! HOWEVER, and this is a huge however, this concept doesn't work with Kratos, what the writers are basically asking from the player, is to be "apologetic" and sympathetic towards someone who doomed countless of innocent lives(Each God he killed doomed the entire greek world in some way) and that's simply an impossible task IF what you want is this "modern" feeling of growth and development, and the tone of the previous trilogy is why it crashes all these intents down. This redemption doesn't feel owned, and you can give winks about it all you want, like Heimdall calling him a monster or the clear fear Odin has, all great details, but those little things don't help at all if at the end, you intent to emotionally manipulate the audience with the message of "Kratos finally being accepted as a God and having friends", that feels awful, NOT because is impossible to pull off, but because your story is not grounded on the morals of that culture and time. If that aspect was still present, then sure. This two new games don't have that brutality of ancient times, and I'm not saying there weren't good people back then, but the morality of these characters is simply too "unmessy" and it completely fails to capture that atmosphere, and you can trash the narrative of the old games all you want, the writing wasn't great in those, but, they worked out that aspect better imo(not too mention the dialogue too, some lines from this games are baffling), and again, not to say that they didn't go overboard sometimes, but this new part of the story needed a bit of that darkness, that edge. That insistent need of wanting to make Kratos relatable is so strange considering who he is in this story, he's doing good deeds now, he did good deeds in Greece too but even so! I'm just shocked how people eat up the direction they're giving him, not sure if it's because most only have a general idea of what went down in greece, I mean, Ragnarok gave a solid quick recap this time, why not do the same in 2018 in some sort of way? I think I know why... because no matter how much time has passed, with context, this new trajectory for Kratos is nothing short of strange and doesn't work in my opinion. His development feels not completely clean and white, I guess he's still a killer here too, but also not gritty enough, Kratos should be a tortured individual, a man who now, thanks to Atreus, has something nice to live for, like Thor said, he's looking for a clean slate, but no matter how nice you put it, he killed millions, would a legend or myth from those times be this apologetic about the redemption of such a character? sure, but this game is clearly not set in times with those kind of morals, and for that, imo, the WHOLE core of these games narrative is flawed and not amazing.

I think what you said is really good. I differ in that I think that Odin was pretty well written and acted. I liked how he was a weak old man, fueled by paranoia and fear. And he is rather cunning with more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Could he have been darker? Sure, but I like how he had a little humanity in him and they tried to empathize with him a bit. A lot of the Atreus/Loki trickster potential was teased and they abandoned it. Kratos becoming the God of Peace is interesting but it does sort of happen suddenly. It's a good message, though.

Everything you’ve said in the video is what I felt overall. With all the climbing sections and the crouching-through-small-space sections, I thought Ragnarok suffered because of this. There were definitely parts of the game that could have been cut or shortened to save time. The more I play, the more I wish certain things were different like the dialogue and pacing. I wish the game didn’t play it too safe and tried to go another direction narratively. This honestly felt like a marvel movie with all the quips and jokes. I have to disagree with calling the story great, the character acting and the development (maybe not in all cases) is great, but the story is poor, very poor in my opinion, the only emotion I felt playing this game was a genuine feeling of fear and dread pleading in my mind that this wasn't all there was to the story right before the credits rolled walking down the hill. The story starts extremely slow, particularly Atreus in Jotunheim with Angrboda, but even if things are boring I appreciate it when it's building story and relationships..... however the story goes balls to the walls 100 miles an hour rushing to its conclusion. We get to see the birth of Jormungandr...but the next time we see him (that version) is at Ragnarok, we meet Surtr, he doesn't want to join us......but in the same scene, seconds later... he joins us. Freyr goes to Alfheim for 20 minutes and the years of elf conflict just ends? Then he dies and I'm supposed to care? The theme of 'fate not being inevitable' has been done before and I don't think they did anything to make it feel impactful... when and how exactly did fate change? I was super dissapointed, heartbroken in fact that the actual lore of Norse Myth didn't come to pass either, I (stupidly) thought that all the events would happen but 'fate being tricky' as quoted by Mimir would mean things don't play out as we suspect them to like Baldur and the mistletoe. But we got nothing, no Thor being killed by Jormungandr, no Odin killed by Fenrir, not Skol and Hati eating the sun and moon, no Surtr and his wife fusing,no Kratos death or fake out date etc...... not only do these events not happen, it's like they're ignored altogether, we don't get some big moment of fate being changed... the just dont happen? The end of the first game was Kratos seeing (what he thought was) his death and accepting it.. this game while acknowledging it just throws it all away We even don't get any fan fair of Jormungandr going back in time, it just happens in the background for reasons??? What was the point in Fenrir? Just the easy answer as to how they escape Asgard, Skol and Hati are just day night cycle mechanics, Surtr just a plot device. So so so dissapointed in this story, they should have made a trilogy and fleshed the story out

Gameplay wise imo os better than 2018's even though it's roughly the same but the story man wow (Spoilers down) Like it's said in the video the pacing is not the best but that didn't bother me much as I looked forward for Ragnarok hell it's the title of the game isn't it. Then when it finally comes is repetitive, rushed and it doesn't feel like a true ending to the whole game which for me personally was 10/10 until the actual end mission. Not only that but the fact that they tossed the hours spent in the Atreus' missions to find the parts of the mask by just destroying it and not even showing us what it would happen if he wore it.

I completed GOW 2018 and I'm about 10 hours into Ragnarok. I really enjoyed GOW 2018. The story and combat was great. But my biggest problem with GOW 2018 was the slow pace of the game and the lack of exploration. The main objective of any game should be providing a fun and entertaining experience. GOW 2018 imo was a mixed bag. There were epic moments of intense combat but most of the game was boring and restrictive. The game's main focus was the story and the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. There were alot of cinematic cut scenes to convey the story, which is fine, but it does feel like you are watching a movie instead of playing a video game. You also spend alot of time traversing from one place to another on the map but yet the exploration is limited. The game feels restrictive in where you can explore. Its a very linear game that tries to give you the illusion of being an open world game. I personally prefer open world exploration games like Horizon Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima over more linear games. Ragnarok is a little better than GOW 2018 in this regard but I can't help but feel like there is a lack of exploration. Overall, GOW 2018 was a solid game and Ragnarok has been good so far but these games are a little too overhyped imo.

The biggest issue is the lack of pay-off. For example, Kratos's prophecy that he will die is never a concern nor brought up ever again, we never get answers about the mask, which makes the Asgard sections feel all for nothing. I also found this game as well as 2018 to be contraindictary in its message about fate as Kratos and his allies talk constantly about the importance of not letting "Fate define your life." This is fine, but the issue is that it's not true because Kratos and Atreus's actions only lead to fulfilling prophesies, even INTENTIONALLY, because it's very evident that prophecy is always on their side. So Kratos and Atreus are happy to follow the exact lines of their prophecy because it benefits them in the end, even though the story confirms prophecies aren't real or powerful because they can be easily diverted without characters having to complete some perilous task. This brings into question why Odin and anyone would take prophecies so seriously if they can be so easily avoided that it makes "Fate" barely important. The fact that the story doesn't point out this irony confirms that the writers genuinely made the mistake of "making a cake, but eating it too" because what the themes are really saying is that "prophecy only matters when it benefits you, but if it doesn't then screw it because we can just decide not to do it." The main characters are all about breaking Fate but end up as nothing BUT the agents of Fate, which is also not serious because it can be broken easily.

I don't know. The game has technically everything, but somehow it just doesn't make sens... And everything repeated over and over and over. Even the graphics. You have a boss fight. You can't win because he can fly, attack from distance, send missiles... Oh, and he's got friends that do the same. What a fun idea to ruin fun. To be honest fights are fun, from time to time, but it was more interesting to see the plans coming together, development of this story etc. I'm not saying that the story wasn't a little bit bad (especially stories with that little sh1t), but it was more interesting than those fights. Seriously, you need a bigger weapon to kill the beast, but to get that weapon you need to kill a beast, but you can't kill that beast because you need to kill a beast which you can't kill because you don't have power... Skills are pretty shit and overhyped rage is doing absolutely nothing to anyone. Rage in Dead island 1 was awesome, here, I don't even use it because it costs you life during fights and you don't even damage enemies. I mean you do, even kill them, but those ones you can damage with rage you cane easily kill with arrows. What is the point of it? Runic abilities... Maxed out... It creates massive this or massive that. Weak enemies die anyway, bosses don't even notice. The hell?? These fights were supposed to be fun. Where is fun in this when you know its pointless? 60 hours in and I can't anymore. This game should have been over at least 20 hours ago but I'm only 75% in. How do you finish this??? And why was this so damn expensive....

Just few things to clear up ign DID NOT rank GOW 2018 as the best game, it was voted by gamers as the best game of all time. You complain about “cinematic” games yet some of your favs seems to be story heavy games that are extremely heavy on story and cutscenes. You make it sound that the open areas had no content in them just picking shit up and that’s really not the case , some of the best moments and stories in Ragnarok Imo were in these side content and as usual the interaction between the characters makes these segments more fun and interesting. I doubt anyone described the new GOW games as “revolutionary” both games have excellent structure by being linear enough to tell a compelling story with high production value while at the same time having open areas to explore and do some side content that are well designed and engaging, combining these two things is what many games struggle with but GOW 2018/Ragnarok did an incredible job in that regard. It does not have the same depth as Elden ring? I love Elden ring but it had by far the weakest combat in the souls series since dark souls 2, Elden ring was an unbalanced mess especially in the late game, it had no focus with its combat leading to some of the most poorly designed enemies and bosses I have ever seen, GOW Ragnarok was much more focused all enemies and bosses play by the same rules as the player making the combat incredibly challenging and satisfying, unlike Elden ring where it constantly contradicts itself by punishing you for playing a certain build, Elden ring is the prime example as having more variety for the sake of variety will result in a less focused combat compare it to Sekiro and Bloodborne and you will realize how much of a step back it is.

I said in the vid that it was a fan vote. The point still remains that IGN has a lot of silly takes on their site. Whoever the editor is at that site only cares about populism. I think calling GoW one of the very best games is disingenuous, which is why I titled the video this way. I definitely value storytelling in video games as much, if not moreso, than anyone out there. The problem is that video games need to tell story through gameplay as well, like how DMC does, for example. The gameplay should be expressive, an extension of what's happening in the story. Kratos letting out the rage through brutal combat is a good component of that, but the other elements, like walking around aimlessly in search of chests full of crafting items is kind of immersion breaking, especially in a game that is story-driven. It's a weird balance. I don't think Elden is perfect, but it's such a behemoth of an open world, of narrative, discovery and freedom of choice that it deserves being called one of the greats. Perhaps it isn't the most refined in terms of combat, but it definitely offers more variety than BB and their earlier works. I don't agree with you about it being the worst combat they've done. I think Elden has better design philosophy than GoW but I guess I can see what you mean when you say the enemies play fairer. I just think that it's a simplistic approach, and this does not discount the fact that the optional bosses are really inflated because of their HP and not difficult for the sake of requiring strategizing. To me, Elden is the step forward and Ragnarok is kind of a stagnation, so I don't consider it a 10.
