What about large format floor tiles and marbles sometimes there's gray tones in them 😭 like the cement/stones for example
@handleisGG8 ай бұрын
Im dead serious about this question, I hope you answer it one day @mrphoenixgrey I NEED to know the rules on large format porcelain tiles and if grey tones are okay (for 1/16th dark grout)

THANK YOU!!! for calling out the hideous white light switches. Finally someone does. There’s soooo many chic choices. My other pet peeve is the big box vent covers. There are plenty of companies who do more custom vent covers. All my vent covers are custom. Plenty of people think my intake vent is a piece of art not a vent. 😂 But I’m OCD so… 😂

The lip pull looks great but I know three (extremely fussy and meticulous) people who have them and they all ended up adding handles. If you actually cook even minimally, the tinniest bit of what is on your hands (flour, wetness after handling meat, general cooking gunk etc), ends up on the top of the drawer, unless you and everyone using the kitchen stops and washes their hands before opening a drawer. Even worse on a lighter finish. In one of those cases, the finish began to visibly wear. And they were very high end cabinets. They look great but, especially for families, not functionally practical.
@damonroberts73728 ай бұрын
I could see that being a problem. Having the lip on the _lower_ edge of the drawers might make sense. If the goal is just to reduce visual clutter, the pulls on authentic Shaker cabinets are simple and elegant.
@sp-bl1sl8 ай бұрын
@@damonroberts7372 Yes because they are so streamlined the simpler the handle the better. One friend used a plain iron knob; very traditional but looked great!

The direction of hardwood,.. my builder said he lays it out perpendicular to the joists. Apparently it’s a matter of longevity for the floor so thats an issue to be aware of. I wasnt given a choice of wide versus medium plank. Apparently i got medium plank. Drat it all 😂 still hardwood is a complete upgrade for me, i am used to vinyl square tiles so very overwhelmed to be in charge of real wood floors but excited too. I was lucky to get beautiful ash wood which with a natural stain still is naturally on the cool side aka grey undertones that keeps it cool,.. but its totally natural because its a property of ash wood. Really super nice. I definitely did some things on this list which are no no’s but i didnt know and also budget. I am still pretty stoked for what i am getting though. (Building) one thing i did right was i am sick of a dark and dreary house that needs the lights turned on just to eat lunch (swear to god) so, i got the biggest honkin windows, no word of a lie, the back wall of the living room my dad was asking why havnt they framed a wall yet and i was like,.. because its all windows. HA!!! Windows everywhere. Huge ones. It’s pure daylight in the kitchen which is at the back wall after the living room and hall. (Open concept) the builder hasn’t had to use any lights at all building yet except for the basement and my walk in closet which doesnt have a window. The cabinets started going in waiting on stone and still the electrician hasn’t come to install lights or switches yet. We didnt even have hydro hooked up till a few weeks ago. It’s so bright the painters everyone just works away no construction lights. Generator for the saw in the beginning and after hydro was hooked up the furnace is running to dry mud and paint but still no lights wired or switches in. It’s so bright. Amazing. I got that right. 😊 Now i am wondering how to have privacy in my bathroom because 2 huge 6 foot by 5 foot windows its a naked show. Nope. Hmmm. Window privacy clings untill i figure out what to do to dress them for my look.

Those white rocker switches and dimmers aren’t cheap here in the states. They’re at least $40 each and I spent hundreds of dollars swapping out the flip switches. I was at an AirBnB that had those fancy round brass knob switches and they look nice but I hated them because I couldn’t just toggle the on/off with my elbow or knuckle and had to spin this and turn that to switch it on/off or to dim. It got annoying after the 2nd day.

OK, not sure if you will see this as it's 8 hours past posting time. However, I HAVE to ask: What about scale? So, for example, I have a tiny bathroom (like 7 x 9, and no way to expand) from 1960's that has 1 x 1" tiles on the floor, and 4 x 4's on the walls. Are you saying a space that small will still look good with 30 x 30" tiles? Even on the floor?

Question about direction of wood flooring: If a large bedroom with a hallway, is it "ok" for the main bedroom to have the floor in one direction and the hallway in another direction (not possible to do herringbone). Think of the main bedroom flooring is perpendicular to the hallway flooring....
@raccoonfederation8 ай бұрын
I think this is pretty common and normal. As long as all the bedrooms have the floor facing the same direction it will look natural

@Mrphoenixgrey thanks for your channel ❤. I’m curious about your take on the organization of slabs when Laying the wood: do you go for a very organized 1/3, do you go for a more random approach, or a 1/2 layout?
@The_Smith8 ай бұрын
YES on the light switches and outlets. In my mind even if it is as simple as choosing ivory instead of the stark white. In my livingroom it's ivory outlets and switches with brass covers on green walls . . . which I 'think' has moved past the dated to timeless look. And those light pipes, or light chimneys or whatever they are called are amazing. My former partner's have one of them in their bathroom and I felt so embarrassed when I couldn't find the switch to turn the light off . . .
@vaderladyl8 ай бұрын
Yes, choosing ivory or other than white helps, as well as painting them the same color of then wall. I have all mine coordinating with the wall color or made out of metal, no whites.

I have said to an interior designer that I wish to have light sconces with a mirror cabinet. He said this is not possible. I have to choose between a flat mirror and sconces OR a mirror cabinet with no sconce. I refuse this alternative because I need to declutter my bathroom with a cabinet, but I also refuse the light from above. I don't know what to do... If you could give me an advice, I would be very grateful ! thanks !
