I have the Vortex for well over 3 years, and from all my puzzles, this one is a mix of love it and hate it. Managed to disassemble it multiple times but only assembled back twice. I recently went back fiddling with it a few times a week while I’m waiting something else to happen. Was on the limbo state, neither assembled properly or disassembled. Managed to disassemble it last night, and now it is back on the limbo state. I am too very curious to find out how on Earth these guys design such puzzles. Although I’m not sure if I would thank them or curse them for what they do :) I usually skip the spoiler section (except for this one as I am really stuck again), but the puzzle presentations and opinions are very nice. I found some very nice puzzles because of you. Thanks for that!

I found my own solution before watching yours, I actually do the start of disassembly and the end of assembly in a different way. Solution spoilers ahead! Disassembly: I also start by lifting the tails, but then I simply rotate the Vortex piece to first take the Hanayama tail out of the Vortex loop and then take the Vortex tail out of the AY loop. This is a single motion with minimal adjustment of where the pieces are. This way I also end up being pretty close to taking the AY tail out of the Hanayama loop already. Assembly: after putting the AY tail in the Hanayama loop, move the Hanayama piece around the AY piece close to its final position. Then simply rotate the Vortex piece so that the Vortex tail slides into the AY loop (through the groove you also use) and the Hanayama tail slides into the Vortex loop.

I am working on this one now. Have yet to put it back in its original state. I bought a pack of 10 of these Hanayama cast puzzles and have solved half of them. I am finding that they are much, much easier to disassemble than to put back together. Reassembly for this one and others has taken hours and hours of endless fidgeting and no small amount of dexterity.
@TheRealSugarShane3 жыл бұрын
Update: I have finally solved this puzzle. I took the pieces totally apart and really tried to think critically on how to start out the links so that I could maneuver them in a specific way. Once I had the initial linking position figured out, I was able to logically maneuver them back to the correctly assembled position. I wish I had started over many hours ago lol.

If you are new to this mind-bending puzzle, here is some info: - On average it takes about a year of casual use to solve this 100% on your own without help. - I've heard of cases where it has taken someone as long as 3 years to solve it. - It personally took me 7 days just to take it apart, 5 more days to put it together with partial viewing of other videos. - It took me two days with the help of youtube to truly understand this puzzle, and be able to take it apart and put it back together unassisted. So in total it took me two weeks to master this thing, with help from videos, and essentially never putting it down. I had it in my hand fiddling with it every single day, in meetings at work, at dinner with friends, in the washroom, on the couch, etc... One night I stayed up till 4am, determined to solve it, then giving up. Lol. I say all this to say, you are NOT cheating by watching this video all the way through. This thing is a masterpiece. You will NOT solve it in a day or two on your own without help.

Hello Jeff, that a legitimate question! I solved the puzzle by myself of course. But by doing it only one time, you barely can remember the solution. For being able to explain is as good as possible I looked into several other solutions and combined them in a way that seemed to me the easiest way to explain, understand and remember it.

I got this puzzle dropped into my hands still in full vortex. I was able to get it to the point where just the three tails were linked. I was on the right track but I was not positioning the vortex piece correctly for it to ever work. I would get close then stuck again. After watching this I positioned it in the fashion shown and it just unlinked almost too easily. It was like untying a knot when you finally get the really tight part undone.

I feel that unless I kept close track of my solution path I would have a far harder time reassembling as the goals seem less intuitive. Disentangling the loops and then the tails seems comparatively intuitive albeit still very difficult. That said I'm making this statement having the benefit of seeing a clean solution.
@Mr.Puzzle7 жыл бұрын
I thought it might be the easiest way to explain it in a way someone could copy the solution and try themselves. There are some shortcuts here and there but they are even more confusing. By the way, when I solved it the first time, the disassembly was not too difficult. The problem was, I had no idea how I did it and it cost me a lot of time to reassemble it. :D

One of my favourites. I managed to disassemble it easily, and with some work, managed to get it almost reassembled, but I need to look up one of the final moves before it would lay flat. A friend managed to disassemble it again, but he put them together in the wrong order, so it was stuck for almost a year. About a month ago, I finally got up the guts to tackle it, and after an hour or so of trying, got it back to the start position. Not going to touch it for a while...

@Sam_on_YouTube7 жыл бұрын
I don't know how they design these, but here's how I would go about it of I were trying to design something like this: First, note that the basic principal is to slide pieces past each other. I would first work with wires and design the basic motion you want to use to get the pieces to slide around. I would make note of the other ways it can move from each position. I would then 3d model smooth pieces with a moderately tight tollerance and 3d print them in plastic. Then I would do the move I had designed. I would note places where a tigbter tollerance would make it impossible and make grooves and other modifications, but I would place them in spots that have to be maneuvered to rather than along the path of the main move. Then I would add extra bumps and obstacles to require moving it into those detour positions so that you can get it back to the main move. I would then 3d model that with a tighter tollerance and try it out, note any places it doesn't work. Then I'd modify it to model it with a tight tollerance. And places it doesn't work I would carve by hand in the plastic to fix it, creating the final plastic model. I'd make those changes and print again and if it works, I'd print in metal. If that works, that becomes the model and I would build casts out of that to make the cast iron puzzles.

I imagine they start with 3 or the same pieces that are easily intertwined, then they add knots to some of the pieces of metal (using epoxy or something) and then drill out/angle grind other pieces, so that the route to unentwining them is uniwue.
