We take a DEEP LOOK at the Ford Explorer Interceptor Utility also known as the FPIU an SUV generally overlooked due to its water pump location and potential for catastrophic failure. But that issue can be easily solved and once passed that you realize that the FPIU just like the crown victoria that came before it, is one of the best value for your money cars you can get today!

Change the PTU fluid AND Coolant every 30k. Change the oil every 5k and use synthetic oil. You can also check the PH of the coolant with a ohm meter. Greater than 0.03, change coolant, but 30k is good. Keep the acidic oil and coolant away from the water pump rubber seal and it can go 200k+

Apparently around the 2012 year Ford did some kind of dual sprocket system on the water pump and did some changes underneath the timing cover I don’t know how much it impacted the longevity of the vehicle But apparently the water pump is something you don’t really have to worry about till after 125,000 miles they used to fail well before that still it is something I would keep an eye on Like every time you fill your gas tank maybe check your oil and your coolant level

I have a relative whose pump went south around 100 thousand miles. The extended warranty paid for itself. Dealer garage kept if for 2 weeks though. I told him they probably put it on the back burner rather than waste a mechanic for 16 hours and probably more. Lots of quick work with better return on their time spent.

Ford stopped making the 3.7 V-6 after 2017. The 2.3 4 cylinder Ecoboost replaced it. Another nice feature on the 3.7 is that it is port injected. No unused oil is getting dumped back into the intake like on turbos and direct injected motors. I had a 2017 Mustang with the 3.7. If I drove like a grandpa, I would get about 24 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway.

@@taylor315 I'm no mechanic; it's always a gamble when you buy a used vehicle. I would try and see the CarFax. A used interceptor I looked had its CarFax on line with the used car dealer selling it. Another factor is hours. Cops' cars can idle the whole shift such as construction jobs. The worse thing about the 3.7 is its internal water pump. They usually go at the 120K-150K miles range. I understand it could be a $2,000 repair. Ask the seller if you could have an independent garage inspect it. Then roll the dice if things look well-maintained.

I bought a 15 FPIU. 110000 commander vehicle.. clean almost mint condition in August. Took to my mechanic that works on these vehicles daily for a SD. He said looks good except the motor mounts are broken . He said its a common issue. I had him flush the cooling system because Ford changed the type for usage. New plugs changed all the fluids. The ballastic panels were removed and the mechanics left the parts in the door panels. Runs great . Never had a SUV before.. its a keeper. Owned 12 crown Victoria s before. Still have one left.

Yeah that’s true but a FPIU is not the same as a ford explorer. It has so many internal differences, but the main thing is you cannot buy a FPIU as a civilian. They also have better suspension. Can take a impact from crash, extra wiring harnesses. So many weird computer things like not being able to open the trunk from the outside, unless a ford tech can decode it. You can buy them if they already have a title though.

I bought a 2105 FPIU - former Michigan State Police vehicle - with the 3.5L twin turbo, near the end of January. Currently has about 117K on it (it had just over 114K on it when I bought it - I drive 86 miles or more 5 days a week). So far I've has to replace the downstream O2 sensor, upper rear control arms, and tires. The lower front control arms are starting to clunk a bit and will be replaced by fall, if not sooner. The mechanic who did the rear end told me that cops tend to drive 'em like they stole 'em. But it still RUNS decently and "takes off like a raped ape", as a friend of mine likes to say! I bought it mainly because it was CHEAP, and I desperately needed a vehicle to replace one I had wrecked a couple weeks before (got run off the road by an impatient idiot on a snowy road on my way to work). Hoping it lasts me a while...

Our PD has a 2013 Explorer Interceptor Utility we bought new. My wife bought a new 2013 Explorer (3.5) about the same time and both have about 130k miles on them. Not sure if our department Explorer is just a POS or it's from the abuse it takes but the two vehicles are completely different from a maintenance perspective. I've replaced the fuel purge valve on the wife's Explorer (aside from common wear items like rotors and pads) but that's about it. The PD Explorer on the other hand... failed water pump, failed motor mount, failed HVAC blower motor, failed alternator, and a failed electronic steering rack...there's probably more but I'd have to pull our maintenance records.

Maybe the inspections are stricter for pd cruiser . Does you wife baby it and what kind of pd department is like rural area small town highway big city etcetera .I follow another guy on you tube who goes to the pd auctions and he say big difference between different police departments in what kind of shape the vehicle in .or maybe one of the vehicles was made on a Monday and one on a Friday 😆😂🤣

Only Achilles’ heel let me introduce you to the Ford AWD PTU. At first Ford said that it was lifetime no service part a few years later they change their tune to every 30,000 miles. And how do you actually change it? Well, they didn’t install a drain plug. You can find videos on how to do that yourself on KZbin. They want you to suck it out of the fill plug that came from the factory. A few years later, and it now comes with a drain plug. A few years later than that and now it comes with a separate cooler because they realized that the half quart of trans fluid was getting baked so bad that you couldn’t even drain it, it would just be black gummy pudding. This just is blatant disregard for the quality of the products they produced. They knew about it so why didn’t they produce a batter part the next years after that? I’m afraid the only answer I can find us they just didn’t care. And I think that this is a theme that I’m finding with a lot of major car brands, including Japanese.

By The Associated Press and MICHELLE CHAPMAN Published: Aug. 16, 2024 at 9:51 AM EDT|Updated: 7 hours ago (AP) - Ford is recalling approximately 85,000 Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles because the engines may fail prematurely and possibly result in a fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that the recall is for vehicles with model years 2020 to 2022 and have 3.3L hybrid or gas engines. The NHTSA said that if an engine failure occurs, significant quantities of engine oil or fuel vapor may be released into the under hood area and may migrate to and accumulate near ignition sources, resulting in a potential under-hood fire, localized melting of components, or smoke. do the research for yourself.
