Toyota Highlander is our favorite because we had a Ford Explorer back in Jan 2006 when we were moving from the East Coast to Denver & U-Haul REFUSED to rent to us. Claimed this was due to the massive amount of Explorer roll overs & that Ford had not only blamed Goodyear but had also blamed U-Haul anytime it happened to occur when someone was towing a U-Haul. We ended up having to rent a Ryder truck AND a tow package so we could tow our Explorer behind the rental truck. If not we'd have had to sell our Explorer because I had broken my leg in multiple spots & couldn't drive, my husband had to. So yeah, Highlander for personal accountability & the fact that knock on wood it's never left our daughter and grand kids stranded

Scotty I bought a 2020 Explorer back in January, The AC went out after 6 months and Ford took a week to figure out what was wrong with it and fix it.

Funny because I bought a new 2021 Explorer Limited in March of this year. In May, when I started to use the AC, it was blowing cold air only on the passenger side. Took two separate trips to the dealer and about 10 days total for them to figure it out. Plus they do not have enough loaner cars to give out. We had leased 5 Honda Pilots in a row (every 3 years starting in 2005). We decided to switch it up and go with the Explorer, we kinda regret it. Though, the Explorer is a very good looking vehicle.

I had a super duty where the ac did not work correctly. They said it was fine I told them I have other trucks This one is wrong,They told me it was because the truck was a dark color (blue vs silver). It was a pita to talk to them to fix. Eventually got the manager who knew I was a business with several trucks. And magically the ac was substantially warmer than should be. Dealerships lie thorough their teeth. It’s a joke

I use it with the seats down and haul more stuff than most of these show trucks, while still getting decent MPG at 18-20 average. Leather seats, looks good and is easy and fun to drive v6, these things are amazing if you are looking for an affordable mid size suv

I owned an early 2000s explorer in 2014 when i was 18/19 years old. I liked it fine and was just happy to have a vehicle. The tranmission went out though and wasnt worth the money to fix. In 2016 I got a 2005 Tacoma and drove it with no issues and I still have it today. My husband and I upgraded my daily driver to a 2017 Highlander a couple of days ago though since we are having our first of hopefully many babies and wanted a family vehicle. I love American brand vehicles but I really trust Toyota to make something good and long lasting.

Hey Scotty, I finally listened but not after I had spent $2500 replacing an oil pump on my Sierra 1500 Crew Cab with 164 000 KM on it. Six months later check engine light came back on and all the GM dealership where I've always serviced the truck since I bought it with 53 000 KM was to clear the codes and use thicker oil to maintain oil pressure. I got rid of that lemon and moved on to something reliable and slick. I got a 2018 Ford F150 FX4 V8....what an amazing drive and thanx for the words of wisdom 🙌 😀

Proud owner of an 03 explorer with the 4.0l. Bought it at 130k miles for $250 because the transmission was going and that's what scrap value was at the time. 50k miles later and I haven't done anything with the transmission except learn to coax it into 2nd gear with the gas pedal. It's my work truck and regularly carries 1000 lbs of tools and a 3500lb trailer. I've also done some light off-roading and no matter how bad the roads get with snow and ice I always make it to the job, and having a true 4x4 with actual low range comes in handy for pulling trees down. I can't speak to the Toyota but I don't think comparing a full framed SUV to a unibody crossover is a fair comparison.

My brother’s got my mom’s 2007 highlander. Mom used it as a work truck for 7 years since new, it drove up and down the east coast as well - went from Toronto to Miami in that thing with the whole family in tow. She gave the highlander to my brother at 200k miles. No mechanical issues at all. My brother shipped the highlander to Dubai where he too used it for business. He drove that thing in a dust storm. Besides minor suspension issues, no problem with the car. 300k miles. He brought it back home to the states 3 years ago after he got married. He bought a new 2018 highlander for the family, and to this day he removed the rear seats and uses that 07 highlander as a work truck. The odometer froze at 350,000 miles. Still runs like a dream. Legendary truck.

Coming from experience any car can get mechanical or electric issues even if you maintain it correctly and even if Scotty recommends one it doesn’t necessarily stop the car from breaking down. Best thing to do is see your area availablility off parts and how easy you can fix them if they break down. My brand new Toyota broke down and it has no turbo and is standard with low mileage it’s now under warranty being fixed.

Well, my 2019 Explorer Sport has been doing pretty well after 3 years of existence. No problems to be stated, but I will say if you’re looking at a Gen 5 Explorer, 2011-2019, they are gas guzzlers for the engines they have. My Explorer’s EcoBoost V6 has a combined mpg of 18. But if you’re towing or driving spiritedly, expect that to drop down to about 11 mpg. This also applies to the Duratec V6.
