He was successful getting Mic Geronimo put on, and he put Jay on Mic's album and it still didn't get him a deal. Jay was best friends with DJ Clark Kent who was an executive at East West as well as Atlantic records. He couldn't get Jay adeal, and he was VP of A&R. Puff was well aware of Jay Z . But he never tried to sign him. The only reason he tried to sign DMX is because of his connection with Ma$e and the Ruff Ryders whose father used to run with Puff's father. You're probably too young to remember but Jay Z had a quick rhymin' style which had already been burnt by Das EFX as well as Treach. People wanted that more slow gangster rhythm that Nas was kickin' and Biggie flipped. The reason why Dame was able to help Jay who was still kicking that fast style was the fact that Dame, the guys around him, as well as Jay and his people were still hustling in the street. So they had some money to spend on promotion. They put out some records that people weren't too excited about at first. It wasn't until Jay did the record with Foxy Brown(Clark's cousin) who was hot at the time, that people started to pay attention. It still took promotion dollars to get a buzz going. It was Dame and those dollars that got Jay the deal at Def Jam which took his career to the next level.

I love Dame Dash when it comes to advice on being a boss and owning your own. I also have to be real here Dame contradicts himself and tries to change narratives only when it benefits him. I agree Dame was blackballed and probably done dirty (this is my opinion but I do not know I was not there) by Jayz for reasons that is not clear to any of us unless you were in their circles. However Dame has to be real, he claims he retired from music and he did not care about hiphop music but Dame Dash Music Group he was very serious with and tried pushing artists like Currency. Dame stated people should not be doing anything they don't love. The guy on the couch answered him by stating he plays an instrument then Dame asks why he does not put out an album. The same question could be asked to Dame why he never rap or put out an album. Dame also needs to face reality he stop being in the music business because people were not doing any business with him anymore, so of course you would not want to do it anymore. He was/is blackballed. You also cannot say Jayz is not a billionaire in one interview then in another "my artists became billionaires so I am the best CEO" sometimes his reality is warped. He has to be real with himself. Over talking people and not letting people ask their questions will not change history or make the accusations against Dame any less believable. This interview shows how difficult Dame can be to deal with at times.

Doing what you love - His point to the interviewer is that people shouldn’t take exploitative roles in various cultures. If you’ve only heard Dame once or twice, maybe I can forgive you for jumping to this incorrect conclusion but if you listen to him very intently - you’ll learn more than anyone else is teaching as far as independence, true ownership and control, honour, integrity, freedom and quality of life are concerned.
