Hey- wait a minute! That vorpally beheaded warforged scenario was a mishmash of misrulings! Vorpal sword either beheads an enemy that requires a head to live, thus killing them instantly, or does an additional 6d8 damage and no beheading. Death ward *negates* any effect that would instantly kill you (once, then ends). The DM said that the warforged needed a head, thus would have died instantly to the Vorpal Sword, thus the Death Ward would have negated the effects of the Vorpal Sword, thus the warforged should have never been beheaded in the first place! YoUr RuIninG Mah ImMurSion.

I'm glad for the info, but in this case, I kind of like the flavor of the misruling. In my party, if such a thing had happened, we likely would have treated it as they did and the beheading would have become flavor text until the effect wore off. Then I, also a Paladin of Redemption, would probably be fucked. XD

Back in 3.5, I was going through a bit of a killer DM phase, so when the party attacked a group of mariliths with the Frenzied Berserker leading with a charge, I smiled evilly and informed them the mariliths had readied actions to cast Blade Barrier in the path of anyone who charged, knocking him down to like -147 HP. However, the players pointed out that the Frenzied Berserker has Deathless Frenzy, which allowed him to still function at -10 HP and less. Upon realizing this, the FB proceeded to roll well over the next few rounds and utterly butcher the mariliths despite the fact that he was more or less a walking pile of ground hamburger. Then another player used Flesh To Stone to turn him into a statue so they could transport him to a cleric temple where they could de-petrify and heal him.

(Context: Not DND but a system called "The Dark Eye", which doesn't have the static class restrictions and a more dynamic combat system. I pretty much maxed out whatever dodge and attack speed skills the system allows me, allowing me to attack up to 3 times a turn, split those attack rolls between multiple enemies each, and dodge 3 times + an additional time for any attack action I don't take for a max of 6, with the only way I don't succeed being a crit fail on the dodge roll. I'm essentially an agility tank who doesn't take damage but slowly chips away at enemies. I even made it through most boss encounters without taking a single hit.) After a long and exhausting campaign across the setting's "island of deadly critters" (think Australia as a tropic rain forest with some 3-4 factions fighting a guerilla war across it) during which we tried to stop the BBEG's minions from establishing power there and partially succeeded, we find out he himself has occupied the capital of said island. Due to our influence and the nature of our mission we manage to request an army of (this setting's equivalent of) clerics and paladins from 2 of the major churches under our command to storm the city. BBEG is a resurrected demon summoner demi-god intent on toppling the gods after failing to do so ages ago - so the palace is a demon infested nightmare that costs us most of our elite forces to get into, to face him in the throne room. He summons 2 demons with multiple razor-tipped tentacles and a healing factor that negates any non-magical damage and makes them resistant against everything else, controlled by his staff, along with a swarm of bat-like critters that harass anyone at distance, while sitting behind an anti-projectile shield behind all that. Seems bad, but we figure out that disturbing his staff stuck in the ground in front of him can disrupt his control over the demons. So I stand between the demons, wasting all their attack actions so they don't focus down the rest of the party and wait for an opening to dash past them and get the staff. Then our Elf archer sends out his living snake tattoo to disrupt the staff - it gets pretty much instantly vaporized by the BBEG, but is enough to get me that opening: I dash forward, succeed a hard acrobatics check to not be caught in the flailing tentacles and am about to grab the staff when I notice that he his in the middle of a cast. The DM warns me that I only have enough time to either dodge OR grab it - but after a second of deliberation I decide that I'm still full HP and this is the only idea we have to turn the encounter in our favor, so I go for it. I manage to grab the staff and throw it behind me towards the rest of the party, when the BBEG's lightning bolt hits me. DM rolls for damage. I check my sheet. I ask what counts for an instant kill in this setting. I check again. 2 HP past instant kill. The room has never been that silent in all of our sessions. BUT I'm saved by a pink sparkle of pixie dust that absorbs half the damage and leaves me severely hurt, but standing. What had happened was that I had triggered our private random event previously in the session: Whenever someone rolls 3 times the same number on a d20 in a row, our "special" friend makes an appearance - a very magic male goblin in nothing but a pink tutu, golden vest and scrap metal crown who thinks he's Titania the Fairy Queen (and the fairies believe it too - long story). (S)he didn't show up then, but we thought nothing of it because it would have been a bit distracting in our storm on the castle. But it gave the DM the best out to not kill me off for my heroic moment. So with his personal staff in our possession, all his summons turned on the BBEG, not appreciating to be enslaved. While he did manage to dust them all before they could land a hit on him and instantly started teleporting out, it was enough for the rest of our party to jump into action. The 3 projectiles from our ranged attackers clattered off the walls behind him, but our (equivalent of a) paladin who jumped in with his spear, transformed into his new giant lizard form, did feel some resistance and had some blood on his magical AND sacred spear (which he has due to a campaign we utterly broke, but that's a story for another time). tl/dr: My almost-death not only allowed us to take his powerful personal staff from the BBEG, we even managed to wound someone even the gods couldn't kill.

My current campaign that I'm running is (and I realize that I'm tempting fate just by saying this) the beauty of it being so open-ended, and built for so many options is the fact that it doesn't matter what the players do, nothing can derail it. If they remove one option there are about 10 others that take its place. And I'm constantly coming up with other ones. There is a specific plot, but I've specifically built it so that I can tell it in many many ways

didn't happen to me but our party's fighter, we were all level one, going through the sewers of waterdeep and I have no idea if it was in the module or our DM was just messing with us, but we encountered a mindflayer. Our fighter recklessly charges it and the mindflayer responds on it's turn by sucking his brain out of his skull with a nat 20, but since he plays a half orc and has the ability to negate one killing blow once per day and return to 1 hp, the dm ruled it as him grabbing his own brain from the hands of the mindflayer, plonking it back in his skull and closing the hole in it like tank hatch. It was amazing

Never fully had this yet, but in my last session two of our party got trapped in this poisonous goo while it’s creature appeared to taunt us, our low int bard pulled out the bag of holding and went to bring out water to wash it off. The water was in their for the short moment they spent underwater after being thrown off the boat. About 20 cubic feet of water shot out and their was a mini tsunami in the caves we where in. I a blood hunter order of the lycan, who had preemptively transformed, took half and passed the saving throw. While most of my party lost about half their hit points before the combat began, I took a measly 7 damage.

15th level zealot barbarian. Went unconscious while raging, shrugged it off because of *relentless rage*. Party was off fighting the bbeg. That wasn't my job, he threw around a lot of wisdom and charisma saving throws, and loved to mind control me. But I had a job: make sure that his army doesn't get there before he dies. I had 232 hp. I was still rolling death saves and after 4 turns I had taken enough hits to fail three times just as I got to the controls for the gate. My dying action was to close the gate and then break it so it couldn't be reopened without significant effort.

Was in a 5e campaign playing as a half-orc barbarian, Mongor. at about 14th level we went up against this massive purple worm and I thought it would be an absolute blast to jump on it and start hacking away before it could burrow back underground. Turns out purple worms are quite flexible and I ended up taking a stinger to the face, it crit, and then I got a nat 1 on the saving throw, so the GM ruled that the poison did double damage. Took me from max hp (nearly 200) down to 2 in a single hit. After the fight was over everyone was stood around looking at Mongor with this 3 foot long stinger that had broken off while it was lodged in his skull, and after being asked if he was okay his reply was "Mongor fine, it not hit anything important, only Mongor brain."

(5e) This month(January) I did something I never thought I would pull off. Simple description of my character: black half dragon dragonborn (I asked if that was possible as I only wanted my breathweapon to do more damage and I was told yes) named Magna(Latin for "great", you'll see why later for multiple reasons) and I chose to be a level four fighter(champion) and level one warlock (hexblade) and, to aid a bit with intimidation(and explaining why I'm proficient in it), I made Magna's height just below being large in size: 9' tall and max Str score(that pretty much made me a walking, breathing wall of muscle). Despite all of the things boosting me, I would always, and I mean *always* miss the first attack I make. Normally I would shrug it off as bad luck for rolls, but one thing changed that mindset entirely. Three monitor skeletons wearing +3 full plate attacked the group(I would like to mention that one had a berserker axe) and, being the protective" older brother" of the group, I threw myself in front of the skeletons and took a decent amount of hp from one with my greatsword, at the cost of the one with the berserker axe (BA from now on) landing a crit and dropping me down to death saves(I always pore most stat boosts in Str and Con). The rest of the team was fighting the three, but a few more hits(although it took forever to actually land one) to the one I hurt badly brought it down, That left two and they managed to take down one and dealing moderate damage to the last, BA. This however left our one and only ranger standing, the rest incapacitated in some way. By that time, I had successfully managed to stabilize myself and returned to consciousness(this actually required me to lose one inspiration I would have gotten in the future as a trade off). Somehow I managed to, in a drunken sort of way, got to my feet undetected by everyone(including my teammate who should have seen me) and lift my greatsword up and, in one reckless swing, I cut it in half. Afterwards, everyone began asking me how I did that(in game) and I simply replied with "What do you mean? Getting to my feet and swinging my sword is something I do daily and besides, all it did was leave a bruise." It, in fact, gave me a disadvantage to anything that required continual movement beyond walking from nearly every bone in my upper body that wasn't my spine being shattered from the BA's attack for the next two sessions where we found someone who could treat my injuries. I got the axe afterwards as I had the highest Str score and could use it a whole lot better than everyone else. That whole event did give Magna PTSD and now he has to make a DC 15 Wis save throw or become frightened by any skeleton undead he sees. Apparently those three skeletons were gate guards-sort of-for the BBEG and we had no idea.

I have a pretty good one for this. My friends and I use tabletop simulator (tts) to play 5e. One quirk to note is that we ALWAYS use gunpowder to make explosives that always act as a deus ex machina for particularly tough encounters. It got to a point where the DM was doing everything in his power to hinder our ability to obtain, create, and even use explosives. During one particularly hard fight, I retrieved one such bomb I had made from a hill-giant's skull, ball bearings, and an unhealthy amount of gunpowder. Forseeing this, even after passing the Dex check to throw it at the target, the DM made me roll for any *accidents* in the usage of the bomb. Unfortunately I rolled at Nat 1 which meant that it explodes halfway between myself and the target and we were both fated to take something like 12 d12 worth of damage. The target took it pretty hard at around 100 damage. Then came my turn to roll. By some divine intervention, my tabaxi rogue only took like 30 damage and then used cunning action to hide after the blast and repeat this with a smaller bomb next turn. To this day, he has been unable to stop us making explosives even after trying to ban gunpowder once.

My Tempest Cleric with the Toughness feat shrugged off three Critical hits from a fire bow and arrow, in a row. It was like, level 6 or 7 and I had 70+ HP, the invisible archer only managed to down me after he hit me one more time with a regular attack. Would've downed him first if we weren't on a boat which, as a Tempest domain, all my spells are AoE and tend to destroy inanimate objects like boats so, couldn't properly defend myself without damaging the boat itself. The fact I survived 3 nat 20's in a row is something I'll never forget though.

My friend wanted to do an extreme difficulty campaign. 3 people were first time players. I was a tabaxi hexblade Warlock and following the games restrictions I put all of my stats into dexterity and charisma, and finally some in Con. 20 dex (normally not supposed to happen at Level 1 but you'll see why) 20 charisma, 14 con... and 1 Strength. Also 8 intelligence and 4 wisdom. Our first battle was 5 bugbears one being a chief of sorts. Overambitious player with a Rogue character ran ahead of the caravan we were guarding to scout it out. Instantly got captured and held hostage as the bugbears were out looking for slaves. We arrive near the same area and bugbears emerge to ambush us. My first attack, Nat 20, Spear, hexblades curse and hex on the bugbear (did it the turn before technically) and hit him down to almost 3 health... then he turned and nat 20'd me, downing me instantly. Except immediately after that the Bard used a spell that finished off the orc, and with the DMs permission, since it was such a short amount of time, hexblades curse healed me to 8 HP or so. I was back up and continued the fight. Of the 6 characters that went in (barbarian, paladin, Rogue, ranger, Bard, warlock) 2 lived. I would've died multiple times if not for the Bard but regardless I did some crazy lucky damage rolls and we tortured the last survivor for fun. The barbarian should've survived but he stopped paying attention and then walked away not realizing how the game works so we just wrote him out of it (with him playing we would've won easily, as the Rogue and paladin basically committed suicide by running in head first and the ranger got caught out and died. This barbarian was also a beefy loxodon and had a massive AC, not to mention he had a flying speed of 25 because he was Battle Dumbo) TL;DR: I instantly died but also didn't and then the rest of the party died horribly until it was just the Bard and my Warlock at like 2 HP... 6 went in, 2 left.

This story is from a Pathfinder campaign and revolves around the Unbreakable fighter archetype and the quirks of the orc race. For those who don’t know, orcs have a trait called ‘Ferocity’ which keeps them up and fighting even when their hit points are in the negatives. Furthermore, they can get bonuses to hit and damage specifically when in the negatives and on the brink of death. As for Unbreakable fighters, they eventually gain a feat called ‘Heroic Defiance’ which allows them to temporarily ignore/delay the effects of a harmful condition. As it so happens, ‘dying’ and ‘dead’ are conditions in Pathfinder … You can see where this is going. Our Unbreakable fighter was an orc named Ufash'dan who preferred to fight with negative hp. He would regularly us his ferocity to keep fighting while ‘dying’ and when he finally tipped over the edge into ‘dead’, he would use Heroic Defiance to stave off death long enough for our cleric to heal him. He would then complain if the cleric healed him back to positive health because of the effective debuff. This happened -all the time-. Which leads me to our story: A fight against a lamia saw our fighter struck by lucky crit, followed by a very unlucky saving throw versus decapitation. Poor Ufash’s head bounced back into the hallway, but our orc’s motto was “I don’t have time to die!” and his body just kept swinging. In comes our cleric, sweeps up the head like a football, ducks past another party member and gets blinded by an enemy spell. He then has to make a heal check, while blind, to put Ufash’s head back on correctly before slapping him with a Heal spell. At which point Ufash’s player bellows, “Nooo! I’m no longer in the negatives!” and continued fighting as if nothing happened. tl;dr Fighter shrugs off decapitation; cleric needs a vacation.

Me and my AL group were running the Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign. We were in Downfall and a Bullywug had failed his planned coup against his king by tripping and stabbing himself in the eye, instantly killing himself. The Bullywug king asked if we had any hand in the events that had unfolded. Instead of answering (because telling a blatant lie in the Feywild is a huge no no), my Fairy Barbarian - without a second thought - took out her +1 dagger and stabbed herself in the leg, dealing max damage to herself. Shocked my DM and fellow players enough to the point that the king's only response was "Okay." before moving along to questioning the others.

Ooh, this probably my top moment for this character. This was in Rise of Tiamat, during the fight with a drop pod of evil space soldiers on a dwarven forge surrounding a star (setup for epic level stuff later). My character was/is a Sea-elf wizard/artificer with a penchant for being the least wizardly wizard you'll ever see and getting up in his enemies faces. For example, during the fight against Tiamat later, I closed melee range before our paladin. So in THIS space fight what happens is I get up to this guy with a pretty brutal enchanted axe and get hit with a 20/1, so buh-bye left arm. I should have been out of it for a second, but I managed a nat20 on my concentration check for whatever spell I had going at the time, so I just kind of... Took it? And then blasted him back with a 7th level magic missile +2d10 extra force damage on my turn directly afterwards, and picked up the axe off his corpse to continue the fight with. I still use the axe and, being an artificer, that left arm was replaced with a metal one that has a Metroid style arm cannon now so net positive for me honestly.

Not mine, but a player's from a game I ran. Said character stuck his hand somewhere he shouldn't had, and had a bunch of parasitic worms burrow into said hand and make a beeline for his spinal cord. Knowing the worms would hijack his nervous system if they reached said spine, he activated a custom magic item of Bestow Curse that allowed him to turn off one of his senses. He turned off his sense of pain, slammed a nearby door on his forearm, and used that to pull his shoulder out of socket, then used a cleaver borrowed from a nearby NPC to amputate the arm. And then uses a mcguffin to blow up a 15d6 fireball directly onto the bleeding shoulder socket to cauterize it. All that said and done, he calmly turned to the party healer and asked if they had a scroll of regenerate on hand.

Rest of the party grabs our NPC's and uses their flight or levitation, but I was odd man out. Luckily, I'm a Barbarian, so I pop rage just before impact, and the 20d6 (DM rolled 83) damage is barely a scratch as it's reduced to 41. Too bad the Dragonborn Fighter who thought it would be badass to Yolo it as well and refused help didn't have the hp to make it intact.

In a homebrew campaign, I had the ability to heal from non-physical damage from an outside source(not telling, but the DM let it work), and a pool of false life. We were fighting a creature that bleeds liquid fire in a dry wheat field. My weapon of choice is a pitchfork I took from an abandoned farm. This thing takes a few hits and a fire starts spreading. It goes into the fire to hide and wait until we burn. Then it becomes my turn. I Unequip my shirt, Stride into the fire, take 6 fire dam...healing and 4 from smoke inhalation... to my false life pool, and plant the pitchfork into the creature, and using something like mold earth on my attack to put out the fire.

This was my in my first campaign I have played and we was on our first quest all at level one at this mansion in-order to slay some orcs trying to harm the starter town we split the party and convinced the orcs someone in our party was a demonic god after some bull happened we were in a pickle with our party leaders fighting for chief position in the village myself and most of the group were still at the mansion and I was playing a sorcerer with +4 constitution. While the party was losing quite poorly a big baddie came out and killed our main party leader. I happened to convince the dm to let me have a home brew weapon that shot fire ball but used half of the users magic when fired I called it the epic stick. The party was in danger and I had a really dumb idea. With the power of talking we convinced the dm to let fly over to the Orcs using the recoil of the blast. So I got on top of the mansion and rolled acrobatics to see if I could use my cloak as a way to decelerate when I was falling. I rolled 14 just good enough and flew like a mile and some before landing in the middle of the fight only taking 3 damage (30% of my total hp).

I don't know if it fits the theme, but here goes. Online homebrew done on chat using 3.5e. Characters were level 10 or so. I was role-playing two characters - a Silver Elf ranger named Yu'Shaia, and his lover, a human Illusionist named Meilin. In the group was Baratus - a barbarian - Logan Axegrinder - a dwarf Artificer - Gypsy - a half-elf druid - and Jarl'axel, a Drow Fighter/Thief. Our group had heard of a demonic cult of an interdimensional demon named Xenos, and through our adventurers had saved Meilin from a necromancer, traveled through a 'Hollow Earth' realm, and were now planning to bring the fight to Xenos directly. The group heard of a sorcerer who might have had intel about Xenos' whereabouts and how to get to him... only for the group to find out the hard way that the patron of the NPC sorcerer in question was Xenos. The main fighters attacked the sorcerer who miraculously kept his concentration and was able to cast a massive AOE spell that did 60 fire damage - enough to burn Yu'Shaia to ashes (Nat 1 on death save). Logan and Jarl'axle were hurting pretty bad, and Baratus was down and on rolling death saves. Meilin somehow survived with only 2 HP, having taken half damage. Given that I had meant to dual-class her as a Monk, she cast 'Burning Hands' as a free action because it was her signature attack spell and went to town on the sorcerer. That fire-fisted punch was enough to kill the sorcerer. The next sessions ended with a series of burials and a ritual to reclaim Yu'Shaia's soul and place it in a clone body.

Thanks to my human defiant trait and armor trait that lets me drop to 1 hp if I would be downed but not killed, I survive 3 explosions and all hostiles in the room are obliterated. The next room over opens and a few more troops run through as the hull integrity alarm goes off. They see my fully armored guardian standing there, seemingly unfazed as his armor looks completely charred. They decide to go fix the hull instead of facing this man who just stood there and took the blasts head on. From their the enemy boss willingly surrendered after realizing what happened. Best moment I have ever been in when it comes to dungeons and dragons of all time.

Ok... best time to shine for me atm So, mythology campaign, most of the party playing as gods or children of gods, me being the only one to serve under a God, I am a wild magic sorcerer paladin, being level 7 for most of this I have done 88 damage on a reaction before, shocking the whole party since that battle was never in our favour... that we turn one... however... this time was different We had just leveled up and I got a custom feat around defending others, which I used to get the remainder of our party out teleporting people onto the polymorphed godess with us (currently a Roc), but the next day we had the chance for another session, so being we were working in the feywild, we had a session for moments before that where a few of us got split off We end up in a vastly different area turning a combat encounter into a Ace Attorney style case, but upon the next fight, being one of the tanks, I was being targeted, I was relatively fine from the fight before since I cast two spells to end it, but this one, I got perfectly cut to -1hp, now so far I had been running off the concept that the next fight would be right after this so I had to keep track of the stats from there, I was told I wasn't when I was about to go down, checked and it was -1, either way, the person playing as their own custom God had come back from the dead before, by their own hand However, they offered it to me, at first, I declined it... I had seen what these "gifts" had done before... next thing our whole party is infected, and I got targeted while down, and failed my next death save, so I had the offer one last time... I reluctantly accepted... On my next turn, I would be put back to full health and spellslots... the main things I was missing... to which upon returning, I obliterated my assailant (also happened to roll a nat1 to target the parasite on the one who resd me using the chaos bolt jump, so they went down, but no death saves required... So now, I have cat ears... and a parasite that I can make some sorts of connections with, doing some cool stuff there... soon

We were playing on Naheulbeuk (a french tabletop RPG) and I played a ranger who ended up as the tank. We were four people fighting about 10 orcs (just one was bad news). We handle ourselves surprisingly well until there's only 4 orcs left. In our side, the cleric is unconscious (near dying), the rogue and archer are one hit away from fainting and I'm the only one with decent health while one orc is in a bad shape and the other three(including the boss) are just fine. I'm facing three orcs while the archer runs away from the boss. Then, an orc deals a crit on me and cuts my ranger's leg off. She now only has one leg and is 1 HP short from fainting, and 4HP short from dying. Then I guess my ranger was in a berserker mood because she dealt 2 crits and slaughtered 2 orcs, while the one who hurt her made a critical failure and just died from his bad RNG. Unfortunately by that time our archer was unconscious and the boss was about to finish her. So I hop up to him and distract him by throwing my own leg to his head. We face each other and I lose my sword, but I deal several crits in a row and end up behind his back, subduing him with a full Nelson, while the rogue just guts him. Then the adrenalina goes off and we wonder what the hell just happened. So basically, my ranger was a barbarian in denial (for the epilogue trivias: by some miracle, none of our characters died. The only ally dying was our archer's squirell. The rogue and I looted the orc camp and found some potions, including health potions, that would have been of great help to our unconscious comrades. Unfortunately, we didn't figure out they were health potions because neither my ranger nor the rogue knew how to read. The ones who knew how to read in the party were the unconscious cleric and the unconscious archer)

My barbarian was facing off against a corrupted warlock and previous ally. For context, she was the last of the original party and everyone else had gone through two or three characters at this point. They’ve gone for two or three rounds at this point, and she’s basically been soloing him while the rest of the party deals with the warlock’s summoned minions. Finally, he gets her down to bloodied, catching her in the side with an axe and a grin. She staggers and drops to one knee. “I thought you’d be the first to die.” He goes. “You always were the weakest among us.” My barbarian draws a javelin of lightning and stab him hard in the stomach. “At least I stayed long enough for you to try and prove it.” I think eventually it was the sorcerer’s Disintegrate that did him in, but between that and getting to snap the handle of his axe I think that was one of our DM’s top five battles.

I was a Dwarf Abjurer Wizard who was captain of the city guard. The party was headed in to capture/kill that campaign arc's BBEG. We sneak down a flight of stairs and see him waiting around the corner. Since the BBEG is a known, fairly powerful sorcerer, and my character is fairly tough and knows Counterspell, I tell the party I'll head in first. I'll try to get information out of him, and if he casts anything, I'll Counterspell and let the rest of the party move in at that point. So I stepped out alone into the room. Talked with the BBEG for a minute about his plans, then he declares I won't leave there alive. I roll a 1 on my initiative. Suddenly, I'm attacked by the head of the Thieves' Guild, along with their right hand man, both of whom were invisible. After I was Julius Caesared in the surprise attack, the BBEG casts a spell to finish me off. I cast the Counterspell, thinking I'm in the clear... and he sics his giant snakes on me. Several venomous bites later, and I finally get my turn. I stared at my 1 remaining hit point. My Dwarf: That all you got you pussies?!? ::casts dimension door::

Party of 3. Elf/half-elf male rogue, Human /celestial female warlock and Goliath cleric (me). Average lvl: 9. About in middle of session we were ambushed by Huge and powerful Yeti. rogue and warlock got some flying itemsso they easily get out of range without even a chance to be hit. Me as proud goliath in heavy armor and Yeti slammed into each other. Within 2 rounds I was dropped to 0 HP, but luckily I casted Death Ward. Thus being on 1 HP instead. Others eventually finished Yeti. Warlock asks: "Dont you need like a staff or something to help you walk? You look injured." Goliath at the bring of death answers: "Hey, rogue, I think she is talking to you..."

Completely forgetting that Relentless Endurence was a thing, I rolled a nat 20 on my death save. The dm ruled that I was back up to 1 hp. Then I got shot again... and remembered my ability this time. Luckily, the dm let me use it, so I narrowly escaped death twice! I guess I deserved the arrows as I was trying to be as irritating to the leader as possible, but I guess I'm a tank?

Not D&D, but Shadowrun. Played a heavily chromed out Street Samurai. He took massive, fatal damage from a headshot, all but one of a handful of d6's rolled a success. Elected to permanently burn my fate/luck pool to reroll the attack. All of the ST's dice failed to hit. From dead to no damage. ST wants me to make a lot of rolls to see if any of my tech is damaged. Thermal vision was the only fail. Had it fixed that night with some of the money we made off of the job.

not sure i have anything that good, but this week in my duet game i had 2 NPCs and one 8th level PC go against a CR 15 angel of decay and a CR 13 lich in a 15 ft room that could only be teleported into and out of. i honestly didnt expect him to find the cave until the end of the campaign, but he REALLY wanted to finish that lich before anything else, so i slightly lowered the Angel of Decay's AC to make it not an absolute blowout. the angel missed it's bull rush and lich had to attack the tank so missed his disintergrate, so things looked like they were going well... until the angel natural 20 crit (and confirm) for almost max 74 damage on the tank doing half her hit points in one hit and then going in for its decay aura. the DPS hit the last damage point on the regenerating lich, the tank moved my player into the range of its phylactery and the player made the call to teleport out. i was certain at least one character was going to die... had the loss speech all ready too.

5e, playing a oneshot. I am playing Carlos Wagner, retired field medic and barbarian. My party is a druid Aracokra, and a rogue Elf. We're naked and lost in the dungeon of some eldritch punk and I'm only level 2 while the others are level 3. We get ambushed by goblins and their pet basilisk, and we run after I get down to 1hp when an arrow hits me. Unfortunately the basilisk is equally fast. I yell "find another way out, I'll hold back the basilisk!" And my party refuses, firing off arrows at it. The first turn I fail my save against the paralysis, but I have one more chance. The basilisk rolls one under my AC and we roleplay my character holding it's jaws open. I succeed on the next save against paralysis while the others use the last of their spell slots and arrows to bring the basilisk down just enough. Third turn I pass the save one more time, and the basilisk misses. I reel back and deliver the head of my axe into the monster's skull... Didn't do the job. I dropped my shield to two-hand the axe I found earlier, but thankfully the druid throws his last dagger and rolls a 4 on damage. The beast goes down and Carlos flexes a-la Armstrong from FMA, removing the built up paralyzing stone on his skin. The goblins let us go after that.

My team’s Bard had such a moment. Session 1.2, My Fairy Fighter was paired with a Human Bard while the two reptilian players were their own subgroup. We entered a bar that confiscated weapons, and got jumped a few minutes later. Bard went before me, cast Sleep on the thugs, and passed them for the entrance to get his whip. Doing so, he got targeted by the 2 thugs still awake, and dropped to 1 HP. My turn, I ran after him, couldn’t get by, and asked him to pass my weapon. I then punched a thug unconscious with 5 damage. The two others targeted me, with my lower AC, and both missed! His turn, he passed my longsword, finally gave me Bardic Inspiration (DM said it can also be used for damage), and bloodied the second. My turn, Bard says Out of Character “finish my guy.” I said OoC “after last session, my girl thinks your guy would prefer to settle this on his own.” I dealt 16 damage to the third thug. DM says that is so much overkill for these guys, that my sword slash launched him across the pub and broke a table. The last conscious thug tried to hit the 1 HP Bard, and missed. After combat finished, I figured my character would be remorseful of killing a person, and try a medicine check on the very dead body she nearly sliced in half. But I asked the DM if I could use Passive Medicine: 10 + (-1) for 9, and got permission. When the town guard rushed in, my Bard convinced them the barkeeper (the reptilian’s enemy) and his thugs were cultists in disguise. Since they already struck that day, nobody liked the racist barkeeper, the bard was staggering on his feet but kept saying he was fine, and the bard was persuasive, he convinced them (and made the DM lol).

I was playing in a star wars saga edition game. At low level we rescued a couple of force sensitive twin children who were on the run. After a grueling fight in which my jedi padawan was on 1 hp left and the rest of the party having not much more. We were set upon by a sith acolyte who attempted to threaten us to hand over the children. I proceeded to walk out of cover full move up to the sith only to ignite my lightsaber and say no. The acolyte then force lightings me at point blank range. Now this should have been me dead but under saga edition rules jedi can (with the right abilities) absorb energy which I managed spending my limited 'force point' to convert it to health. What followed was the most satisfying max damage crit of my gaming experience instantly killing the acolyte. All in all ending that fight 2 hp off of max

As a dwarf warrior/paladin, I once got dumped into an acid lake by a young black dragon. He just, gently pushed me in like a cat would push a glass out of a table, and then nonchalantly pressed my head deep in the lake. That almost killed me, destroyed all of my stuff, even my bearb and hair, and messed up badly my flesh. I swam out of it barely alive ( like 5 Hp left ) and all naked, grabed the dagger from my mage friend, and charged the dragon next turn. In the end, we survived and killed the beast. After that a priest healed my flesh, and my god gave me hair and beard made of ash and fire.

This just happened last session. Our party of three consisted of a Satyr Alchemist Artificer, a reskinned Owl Aracockra Wild Magic Sorcerer, and me, a Drow College of Glamor Bard. We also forced our DM to give us an NPC tank in the form of a Minotaur fighter, as we all built Support characters. We were traveling through Theros when we found out Setessa was attacked, creating refugees, and specifically: children displaced from their parents. We get to the city where the refugees were, and we can't find 5 of the parents. Through asking around we find out that they went hunting. We went to look for them and tracked them to a pond with a tree in the middle. This tree housed the nest of a Queen Harpy and her flock of 10 Bloodtoll harpies. We tried to make a deal with the Harpy, which she refused and initiated combat. During the negotiations, she took a disliking to my character. She was being generally menacing. She then raised the dead with her Song of the Grave (buffed a little since there were no existing undead, but there was a pond full of corpses.). Then the minotaur threw me into the flock of harpies and I casted a 3rd level thunderwave, landing on the lead harpy. Both my rolls and the minotaur's roll were very good. The thunderwave killed all the harpies it hit, which was 8, plus landing on the Queen. But that used my entire turn and she went right after me. She dropped me to 0 hp, and my last words were "This was your choice." The artificer immediately casted healing word after this, so I didn't even make a death save, our sorcerer killed the last 2 Harpies, and I casted dissonant whispers on the Queen, echoing the words "your choice." The minotaur accidentally cut down the tree while trying to hit an undead, and the sorcerer finished off the queen while she tried to get away from me. We found all 5 parents, but three were in the aforementioned corpse pond, and the other 2 we brought back to the city.

I Eldritch Blasted the skeleton who killed me, blowing it to pieces.

Not exactly a " tis but a scratch " moment but still decently badass I'm playing a lvl 7th human eldritch knight acting as the tank ( our rogue bard multiclass was absent) and our wood elf Ranger was with us ( she took whichever subclass gave her hoardebreaker because she figured out how to make it OP as fuck ) We're in ship to ship combat and this is a low magic world and gunpowder doesn't exist for cannons We were ambushed by people from the enemy side which we let live ( only really lived because we would brand them with the symbol of a God that symbol was my characters symbol because he's trying to be a God) so the branded enemies ambushed us with a boat full of people and a rok ( the giant bird) A few rounds go by and we finally kill it as it falls into the water with my javelin of lightning in it, I grab my mithril greataxe one handed ( because +5 STR ) and use a bonus action to call the javelin over to my hand out of the water with one of eldirtch knights abilities Everyone froze and my character said " your all next "

So, I am in a homebrew campaign (dm created an entire world, and everything needed to run it) and i was playing a yuan-ti pact of the chain fiend warlock. Due to back story reasons, i have a LOT of people trying to kill me, and despite what all of companions believed, my character had never committed a crime in her life. (abusing loopholes is not a crime) She also quickly gained a reputation of surviving EVERYTHING. Pointblank lightning bolt from deluded wizard? come out singed and sparkly but still walking. Punted by a treant cause the paladin jumps aside “to see if i can take it” every rib is bruised but i can still cast fireball. Assassin catch up while we are dealing with child slave ring and able to poison me cause i agreed to let my dm create a poison that actually worked on yuan-ti (actually lot more to it, its just easier to say it lets me be poisoned). Play dead, use fiend warlocks ability to gain temp hp from kills (thank you high charisma and rnjesus) to stay alive till everyone is dead and i can get cleansed with 5 hp left. Get a gelatinous cube dropped on me… twice. (there were three of them and my dm is a bastard) Survive by sheer luck. Get lighting bolted by the same crazy wizard again AND magic missiled… went to death saves but succeeded and lived (same dungeon as the gelatinous cubes) Survive an encounter with a false hydra… existential crisis for a week. Then survived an encounter with an undead hydra (another note: my dm though undead versions of creatures were “too weak” so removed all debuffs aside from weaknesses to fire and holy) a week in game later dealt with an adult white dragon (cause people dont listen to the “evil” warlock when she recognizes the territory of another reptilian)… ended up getting the killing blow after once again having to play dead after getting half my body frozen. Finally it happened. one of the bosses in the campaign. had a massive magically powered shield and two very annoying minions. A bone naga, and a undead beholder. luckily we figured out how the shield worked cause the bone naga instantly went for me. (cause of course the dm kept the animosity between bone nagas and yuan-ti) Repulsing blast invocation along with sprinting between environment hazards kept me alive until it was dead, and then i pulled a stupid. i played distraction to save my team. i got the attention of the undead beholder and played a game of ring-around-the-pillar. it finally got me with a disintegration ray. … Oh? you think my character would die? from that? You are right it was the first time my character was in a truly desperate situation. My dm allowed a lot of creative freedom with pacts. and the archdemon i made a deal with just happened to be the one that had more of an interest in inhabiting my body rather than take my soul. She couldnt let her future body become ash now could she? So, i was saved and given the power of a lv 20 warlock. kind of. i had 30 seconds to kill the undead beholder and the now unprotected bbeg before my soul would be shunted from my body and the archdemon takes my place. Suffice to say, beholder and bbeg died quickly. I told my friends quickly the situation and that they shouldnt fight as i may have put into the contract that my patron couldnt do whatever she wanted until ALL of my enemies where properly punished. My soul was shunted, archdemon took over, portaled the fuck out. … No, my poor warlock is dead… well her body is, she may have been worshiping an ancient deity of survival on the side ever since the gelatinous cube incident, and she may have also known that the bard would abso-%^*+ing-lutely take her shit with out checking it. She may have also thrown all of her remaining willpower into possessing her most prized possession (her map-case) as she was shunted out… and is now rooming inside the bards brain/soul. No longer a warlock, just an eccentric archeologist with a love for maps and a VERY strong will to not die. He was not happy. (irl, he absolutely loves it) tldr: Warlock says no to death even when it sticks

So, we're assaulting the headquarters of a kyton demagogue on the Plane of Shadow of another world in order to steal the frozen corpse of Tiamat. We are under no illusions that stealth will work and have dropped any facade of subtlety for the biggest, loudest smash and grab the world has ever seen. We get dropped off outside the gates of his fortress, which are guarded by two absolutely ginormous xixecals (giant living glacier abominations) thousands of feet tall, which are none too happy with us knocking on the door with fireballs and decide to shoo us away with force. One of them makes their way over to me and promptly flattens me into jelly by stepping on me, causing a massive amount of con damage as well as a few thousand points of damage. Needless to say, I don't survive this and am instantly dropped. Except that I'm not dead. Why? Because I'm a summoner, and one of the abilities that summoner has is that as long as my eidolon is alive, I can redirect any damage that would drop me past 0 to them and they can redirect any damage that would drop them past 1 to me. This means that in order to kill either of us with HP damage, you have to do enough damage to kill both. So this mountain-sized ice abomination looks down at the crushed wasteland beneath its feet as this skinny redhead picks themselves up from what I can only imagine is a Wile E Coyote hole and looks up at it with 0 HP and 2 con with arms crossed before they get absolutely wrecked by one of my teammates.
