White Seabass in the Surf Zone (Freediving)

The elusive White Seabass is a game fish also known as the Grey Ghost. The White Seabass is normally skittish, hard to approach and is rarely seen by SCUBA divers due to the noisy bubbles. This video was filmed in a marine protected area in Laguna Beach CA. over the course of a few weeks while freediving (no tanks). The fish have now mostly left the area, but being able to swim with them and get close was a truly amazing experience. I estimate the largest fish at over 4 feet in length.

It's amazing how the lack of pressure allows the fish to be approached. That's why Black sea bass can be approached anytime too. At 3:17 there is a wounded one may be from a missed shot out of the preserve or a fishing line. IMO not disclosing location might be wise, poachers, unfortunately, have no boundaries.

I swam with a school of similarly-sized ghosts while freediving in an MPA down south in San Diego a week ago. They're magnificent up close; so rad. Thanks for the video, and great diving/filming! This is why we have MPAs!

I did freediving in that area for 20 years, maybe 1990-2010 or so. Never saw a single White Sea bass. Very interesting. Do them come closer to shore now?

I can’t do it I can’t speargun them I rather have the opportunity to fight them on rod and reel and if they get away they get away there will always be a next time I respect a good spear fisherman but when I seen a big fish Just seeing it swim sometimes yeah I know it’s hard but hey what can I say I found
