When you first started making rock and metal reaction videos, did you ever think you would end up parading around your room wearing a flag, come cape, of a Japanese band fronted by three teenage girls? Let alone copy their dance moves? Just a small part of the effect BabyMetal, has on people :-)

First things first - nice flag and #Notacult So 'BABYMETAL Death' is all based on a pun. The Japanese word desu (the U is silent) sounds a bit like the English word death, but it means 'to be, I am, you are, we are' etc. All they are doing is introducing themselves "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "Su-metal desu", Yuimetal desu", "Moametal desu", "BABYMETAL desu" ....or "I am Su-metal", "I am Yuimetal", I am Moametal", "we are BABYMETAL" and then everybody chants "Death Death Death Death Death". The introduction at the start translates as: "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains... little time.." This whole show (Legend 1997) marked the final stage in BABYMETAL's transition from Idol sub-unit to independent metal band. It started with an obviously lip synced techno dance remix of 'Headbanger' with Babybones on stage for the next few songs while the girls sang and they mimed the instruments. For the last 5 songs the Kami Band were on stage playing live and this song was the finale. From their next big shows in Japan, early in 2014, the Kami Band became their full time backing band for all live shows. More importantly it was Su's 16th birthday and, as the translated intro explained, she was giving up her life as a human and her life as a Jpop Idol to be reborn as a Metal Goddess. They only crucify Su on special occasions (they did it twice for her 20th birthday in 2017 - so that makes 5 times in all ... so far). Oh yeah did I say #Notacult

The story behind this, as was explained at the start with the projections, was this was Su's 16th birthday. She was born an idol, and had to die to be reborn as a metal goddess. Rebirth is a big theme in Japan. This is a one off performance, usually Babymetal Death! is how they started the show, in a much less elborate peformance. They do know how to do spectacle. I can think of two other bands that can pull this off. Alice Cooper and Rammstein. The Headbanger performance you reacted to was the song immediately before this in concert, and Gimme Chocolate! was much earlier in the show.

About the song. This was a concert opener. In japanese language the verb "desu", pronounced des, is a polite form of the verb _to be_ . So the girls tried to say it with cuteness putting the tongue between the teeth and it sounded cute and metal at the same time "dez"/ _death_ . This way, as a concert opener, they introduce themselves. "Su-metal death" _I am Su-metal_ , "Yui-metal death", "Moa-metal death", "Babymetal death" _we are Babymetal_ . But in the Legend 1997 show it didn't work exactly like that. This was the concert closer and here they were representing the death of Su-metal to be reborn with the soul of an ancient Metal warrior to fight the world in a Metal Resistance to make Heavy Metal great again. The name of Legend 1997 is not because it was in 1997. This show took place at the Makuhari Messe convent hall in Tokyo on december 2013. It was the birthday show for Suzuka Nakamoto and the concert was called "Su-metal Seitansai", _Su-metal's birthday festival_ . But as in the lore of Babymetal they are fighting a resistance to make metal great in the name of the fox god, every big arena concert for them is a battle, and for a battle won a new Legend is born (and a Blu-ray disc that you can buy to make Koba-metal happier). So the BRD of the "Su-metal seitansai" concert is Legend 1997, 1997 because it was Suzuka's year of birth. By the way. We are #NotACult 😏🦊

This song always gets to me... It's like the gods are coming... or going (depends on if the song is openning or ending the show)... and it's them. The three little kitsunes, backed up by a monster of a band blowing minds off ... it's such a weird mix. This is the Babymetal I'm in love with... but the song that got me completely addicted to them was the very first one I listen from them: "CATCH ME IF YOU CAN" -- please do that one!!! Curious thing about it is that it was the iconic dance moves of "Catch Me" that made me want to watch it over and over and over and at some point I was looking around for more and more Babymetal ... The three will always be in my heart forever, whatever they do now or in the future... those first 5 years of Babymetal are some of the best things I watched and listen in my whole life. At this concert I believe it is at or near the beginning. The neck collar is from Handbanger, official MV. The neck collar is symbol of metal music in Japan from X Japan's drummer/songwriter Yoshiki. Who damaged his neck headbanging while playing. His doctors requiring him wear the collar while performing. X Japan is the great metal band you likely never heard of. Gene Simmons said if they had been American they would have been the biggest band in the world. X Japan was to be the first band from Japan to perform at Wembley Arena, but they fell apart. Babymetal became the first band from Japan to perform at the Wembley Arena. Yoshiki met with them prior to their Wembley performance, that delighted and awed the girls.

My second full-time job out of high school I was very bored working late (parts dept. at a car dealer), so my buddy and I were messing around. I tied a black trash bag like a cape, and put a cardboard box on my head while wearing a shirt that simply said "I eat glue". Everyone already filled you in on the play on words, and that they are not saying "Death", so I won't go there. What I *WILL* go into is the music. If you haven't figured it out, this song reeks of Metallica, because it's partly a tribute to Metallica. The opening riff? Straight from One. You could mesh this together with it and not miss a beat. Second. The neckbrace. That is a tribute to the drummer from the band X-Japan. He'd headbang so hard while playing drums that he all but broke his neck. So he had to wear a neckbrace whenever he played. Babymetal took that gimmick and ran with it. Third, the statue. Back to a tribute to Metallica. During their "..And Justice For All" tour in 1998, they had a statue of Lady Justice (they named her "Doris"). At the end of their show, the head of Doris would fall off the statue. That's what they did here, except that if you look close, it looks like the Statue of Mary (coincidentally, for this show, they opened it with Ave Maria (Hail Mary) ). There are no religious connotations for this, outside of a simple "being reborn". This is simply done for theatrics.
