I really wish they had kept certain scenes in the movie, particularly the spelling bee scene. It adds more context to why he was helping Lydia spell the word Discriminate and more importantly, it shows more of how their parent's constant bickering is affecting her (and by extension her siblings). What Daniel says to her about how if they acted happy all the time, they would be pretty miserable and how they'd be a fake family is powerful and adds more weight to the ending when he says (as Mrs Doubtfire), "some parents when they're angry, they get along much better when they don't live together". Also, this scene brings out some of the best acting moments from Lisa Jakub (actress who played Lydia). I'm now realizing that the final cut of the film kinda downplayed how good of an actress she is/was.

Robin Williams had a mentor whom I remember, named Jonathan Williams. Williams had the same zany mind flashing from one character to another. He would monologue 3 or 4 characters at high speed. I think, as you say, that some of these scenes detracted from the story they were telling. Still, the actor playing the neighbor lady must have felt bad to have most of her part on the cutting room floor. Much like the actor who played Celeborn in The Lord of the Rings. Now whenever I see a role where most of the actor's lines got deleted, I say "s/he got Celeborned!"

Kevin Lebby--Actually, is "Mrs. Hilliard" who is equally at fault here. Having a loud, public spat with a spouse is considered boorish and ill-mannered. She should have shut her mouth until their differences could be resolved in the privacy of their own home. That doesn't let "Ms Gloria" off the hook, though. Good manners dictates that, when overhearing a public scene between a couple (or anyone else), when there is no threat to either party (such as physical abuse or using a weapon), one quietly and unobtrusively vacates the area. Both these women have no sense of the fitness of things. "Mr. Hilliard", also at fault, should have either told his spouse that the street wasn't the appropriate place for the argument and given her the choice of cleaning up the property or going inside to air their differences. But then, that wouldn't have made for good theater, would it?
