Just saw them in Denver. I'm 54 and I haven't been to a concert since the mid 80s. Having the opportunity to see Nightwish motivated me to spend two days making the 700 mile round trip from my home in Utah. The show was awesome, even though the production was limited to smoke machines and a plethora of lighting effects. It didn't matter. The band _was_ the show and they delivered a very near flawless performance while being their typical happy selves. Though Marko is missed and some songs sound different as a result, the Mozart, Valkyrie Queen, and Merry Minstrels of Metal still reign supreme.

Section 1 of the song is entitled 4.6. As in 4.6 billion years ,the age of the Earth. The big bang was 14 billion years ago, so the fireworks represent the early bombardment of Earth by comets, meteors, etc. Mrs. H, the voice over is done by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. And DH is correct in that he wrote the books this song is inspired by. I've never seen them, so I'm definitely jealous. Have a great time at the show!

I tend to agree though I can see it could be interpreted as supernovas forming more elements and the 4.6 part referring to the formation of the Earth at that time, as a major event during the first part... The fireworks are definitely not the big bang though ,the big bang would have to be the very beginning of the song. There was nothing and then there was sound.

"We were here", as David pointed out in the end of his comment, also reflects our human urge to try to overcome our own mortality, to let people who are coming after us know that we existed (I think about the drawings in caves of hunting scenes and hands, from pre-historical times) and that we did things, fought, loved...this thought always brings tears to my eyes.

O yes, I feel that with every fibre in my body. My wife was here 'till the fall of 2020. Now she twinkles from above every time NW does the Greatest Show. We were supposed to go and see NW in Amsterdam 2020, but she died two months before (the concert was postponed anyway). That concert will take place in Amsterdam, Nov 27th this year. I'll be there with my family and I will wear her t-shirt saying "TJ was here, 1977 - 2020" 🤘🥲

To be accurate, Homo sapiens has been around for about 300,000 years, but hominids have been around a lot longer. Australopithecines emerged over 4.2 million years ago. The genus Homo began about 2 million years ago. David wasn't far off.

The fireworks represent not the 'Big Bang' but the bombardement of asteroids on the early Earth. The song starts with '4.6', as in 4.6. billion years ago. The Big Bang has been estimated occuring between 11 and 17 billion years ago. The second part of fireworks is the collision with another celestial body which formed our moon. The song was originally much longer, so Tuomas rewrote some parts. It is not easy to put 4.6 billion years in one song. The growling of early man was done by all three of them. In the live version you will experience it for yourself with Floor and Troy together. In the song 'Tribal' they do it again which is also on the setlist on this tour.
@jessicakoster2543
@jessicakoster2543 2 жыл бұрын
I would like to offer another possibility. This part is called "4.6" but it doesn't necessarily have to start at 4.6 years ago. It could be they just started at the beginning. If you think of it as a story, you don't start halfway, you lead up to it. So the fireworks could be the big bang announcing the 4.6, the birth of the earth. I'm not saying this is the absolute truth, but it might be a possibility. The song also isn't entirely chronological, with the introduction of man by Richard Dawkins in the beginning. Or the part about the disappearance of humans and the entering of Ratkind. After that they sing about a man trying to understand a single grain of sand. Nightwish lyrics are not always clearcut

@@jessicakoster2543The fireworks are not the Big Bang, but they could represent supernovas, though I like the bombardment of the Earth idea more. Cannot be sure without Tuomas confirming what he meant by it.

@@jessicakoster2543 Toumas has confirmed that it's the story of our planet, not the Universe so it is the bombardment of asteroids. As you said it's not linear but there's no references in the lyrics to the Big Bang however there's plenty of references to the forming of the planets around our sun.

For Mrs. Heretic, All of Floor's costumes are custom made for her by Royal Black Couture & Corsetry. She said in one of her livestreams that since she turned 40 she no longer performs in heels! Whichever costome she wears for your show you will see that her boots have little to no heel. When I saw this live in Boston it was so epic. Great interaction between Floor and Troy when they were both growling (Floor looking at Troy like he was trying to steal her vocals!). The outro for the concert is Ad Astra from Disc 2 of the most recent album Human]::[Nature and it also has an amazing spoke word part from Carl Sagan from his Pale Blue Dot. Worth checking out before the show. These two songs are an amazing way to end a show (along with Last Ride of the Day and Ghost Love Score). So amazing and uplifting.

Tampere isn't daytime, but Finland has _long_ evenings in summer... The voice is the voice of Richard Dawkins. In the version from Wembley Arena you will actually get to see him appear on stage to deliver the final lines himself, which is the mean reason I think some people prefer that version.

Great reaction again. - As mentioned earlier, it wasn't daytime. It was already evening. Nightwish started their Tampere concert at 9 pm and this song was the last, so it was already even later in the evening. However, it was the end of July and the nights in Finland are very bright in the summer when the sun barely sets. In fact, it does not set at all in northern Finland in the mid-summer and doesn't rise there above the horizon at all in mid-winter.

And I'm pretty sure Dave or Mrs. Heretic won't pull phone from their pocket and film the concert like some do. Jen did it just right. You kept video diary in before and after their show. Dave is like me i hate ppl that come to "see the show", but film it with phone and sees nothing with their own eyes. Those people's camera's and phones should be taken away.In 2015 Tampere show i had a girl next to me that kept taking pics and sending those as a proof throughout the concert. I even said to her was it worth the ticket if she looks whole concert via smartphone screen like from YT. That was my RANT that David does sometimes. Lol. I hope and know that you will be happy to witness them love. In this year's shows in Finland new bassist Jukka was first little shy or scared to perform. But as concert went on He relaxed much more.I still missed Marco tho. Troy did good singing some of the parts that Marco used to. Idk why Jukka won't do backup vocals, because he did so in winter sun with that other guitarist.

You definitely grasped the idea behind the song, in fact the whole album is dedicated to this theme and this song was the ultimate finale. It is predicted if humans destroy Earth, by nuclear fall out the rodents will survive, hence the enter rat kind. Can you imagine that Tuomas said he hears every part of every instrument in his head when he composes his music, he explained that once in an interview when he was asked how he came up with the music. He literally writes everything even guitar riffs initially and makes a demo for the other members. from then on they can give their input and alter and change things if they want. The only thing he never touches are guitar solos, that is totally Emppu. Whenever I hear this song I always think how lucky we are to be here now and witness these awesome people bringing their best. Enjoy the show !

Yes! Nightwish killed the show my wife and I just attended at the historic Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on Wednesday, May 18th. What an incredible show ... including The Greatest Show on Earth as the concert finale. They sounded wonderful and performed with such energy and joy. Floor's vocals were amazing throughout. Her operatic rendition of the end of Shoemaker was unbelievable. I am so looking forward to them professionally recording these performances at some of the larger European shows as opposed to the fan cellphone recordings. Being there live was epic.

"When did something like us first appear on the planet? It turns out there’s remarkably little agreement on this question. Fossils and DNA suggest people looking like us, anatomically modern Homo sapiens, evolved around 300,000 years ago. Surprisingly, archaeology - tools, artefacts, cave art - suggest that complex technology and cultures, “behavioural modernity”, evolved more recently: 50,000-65,000 years ago." - so not that much and we have changed EVERYTHING!!!!!

Hope your show is a great time for you both but remember a lot of smaller indoor venues the Fire Marshal says what pyro can be used if any. Note: it was all three growling (animal sounds). "Mr. sensitive LOL

Oh! homework assignment for you and Mrs. Heretic! You can either do this by rewatching the video or hearing this when you see them live. That last part before the band comes back in with "Man has took his time in the sun..." Where it's just Tuomas and the keyboards, while the spotlight is basically on Tuomas, the big easter egg here is to listen to what is being played underneath Tuomas, all the way up until vocals come in again. You should hear in this order: Dies Irae (Gregorian Chants) Minuet in G Major by Christian Petzold (played very lightly on a harpsichord. Think the typical ballerina's minuet) Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, by Bach Banjo playing (whether a part of Dueling Banjos or from Deliverance, I'm not sure) Enter Sandman Electronic Dance Music beats In short, while the song is about the evolution of life and humans on this planet, Tuomas also took you through the evolution of music, from the first ever piece to ever be recorded, all the way up to present day. Listen for that, as you can see he was having fun with this as well!

Great reaction to a great performance of a great piece - what more could we ask for? Fun fact: if you have a version of the Endless Forms album with the instrumental CD, you get a little bonus 5-second message from Richard Dawkins at the end of Greatest Show...

Ive listened to NW many years now, and many of the songs in the catalog, is songs that grow on you, there is also a few you just say, arrhh ok, i heard that now, lets move on, and those in the middle, but a lot of them is growers, that get better for each time you listen to them.. BTW the spoken words is done bt Richard Dawkins, one day you might should react to the Wembley version, or at least see it yourself, as Mr. Dawkins is on stage at this show..

Nice reaction once again. Ms H is so spot on with the jest of this great song The narration part of this song is Richard Dawkins the British evolutionary biologist and author. Although this Tampere is the better performance the Wembley version of this song Dawkins actually comes out at the end and does the narration in person. Wirth watching. This must be one of the greatest metal compositions ever created. Tuomas is a masterfull genius

I personally like the Tampere version more, for this song and The Poet and the Pendulum. Good choice! I'm also starting to like the Buenos Aires version of Ghost Love Score more, too. Seems more "raw" sounding.

great review, I'm curious, I'd love to see you and Mrs. Heretic do a review after you see their live concert and get you're reaction, I'll probably get some hate but I'm sorry to cause in my opinion even though I love Floor and the band from the few songs I've watched without Marco it's just not the same, I know Troy tries to compensate but I still sense the missing element. Would like to get your reaction, I haven't watched many ( I refuse to watch those cell phone videos, the sound and picture quality are terrible) just a suggestion.

Thats actually Tuomas opinion. This is, in his mind, his Magnum Opus. The fanbase just accepted it. Im mean, there is no reason they shouldnt. But the fact that its called those particular words "Magnum Opus" is cause thats what Tuomas called it. "Masterpiece" wouldve been the go-to phrasing if they came up with it themselves. Id say roughly 99% of the fans using the term didnt know it existed until Tuomas said it.

10:30 I think it's worth mentioning that Earth wasn't created in the big bang because it only created lots of hydrogen. Before Earth could form, multiple generations of stars going supernova were required in between to manufacture all the different atoms were are seeing here on Earth. And I guess some of the song represents this time period, too.
