@@Dr.SyedSaifAbbasNaqvi Spoiler Alert‼️ If you haven’t seen the movies, don’t read my second and third paragraphs! I became “Team Barrow” when he used all of his savings to obtain the cooking ingredients, and then discovered that they were fake. I just felt so awful for him. I loved him from that episode on. He was a very complex and nuanced character, and Rob James-Collier is a FANTASTIC actor! And you’re right - he did have a wonderful heart. He didn’t hesitate at all when Lady Edith’s bedroom was engulfed in flames. He ran right into the fire to rescue her! He took a beating for Jimmy, who just ran away. He was a good man underneath the snark. One thing that did bother me occurred in the first movie. When Lady Mary asked Carson to come back to Downton to help prepare for the King and Queens visit; because Barrow wasn’t quite up to the task, and wasn’t preparing things properly. That bugged me, because Barrow was always very competent at his job. Even when he was plotting and scheming, he worked hard and knew what needed to be done. I realize it was just a plot device to bring Carson into the story, but I thought they should have accomplished it in a different way. They could have had Barrow sprain his wrist or something like that, and not have maligned his work. If there’s a third movie I really hope he will be included in it. We really need him with the Dowager Countess gone. I hope Barrow will at least come back with his beau for a visit!

The Dowager once said, "a lack of compassion is as vulgar as an excess of tears". Somehow, Mrs. Hughes is the personification of the ideal kind of person the Dowager was describing with that saying - a balanced person. Compassionate yet not overly emotional. Whilst many wish we have a Mrs. Hughes in our lives, she is the kind of person that I wish my own character emulated. Alas, I am not like her, no matter how much I strive to be wise and a good judge of character.

but open minded enough. She never condemned Thomas Barrow for being gay. Carson on the other hand..... though one has to hand it to Carson, he never intended to report Barrow for being gay (which was a crime back then that was punishable by prison - not just jail - and you were shunned for the rest of your life. Good luck in trying to find a job). Mrs. Hughes was so compassionate about some of the afflictions that everyone had in their own ways. Highly admirable. Even in today's day and age. The narrowmindedness of some and the ignorance of others is an absolute turn off.

Though not a fan of full out dramas, I very much liked this show. Though not very accurate as the woman servants were given far too much leeway and Barrows, though disliked for his shadiness, was not ostracized as he would be in that time and age. It was touched on of course but no one shunned him. And when he was reported to the police, Lord Granthum talked the police out of it. Both the Earl and the Doctor declaring Barrows did not choose to be that way.
