Spirit is all well, but her fortune…and it was a huge one was necessary to Robert. A point of comparison, Consuelo Vanderbilt, and of course, she was one of the richest (even among the rich girls of the era) but her fortune was around $2M during the latter 19th century…which makes it maybe 10 times more now. Cora may not have had the same fortune but certainly close. She talked about her family’s status with Bricker.

@@marinazagrai1623More like "100 times more", or close to it, actually. Inflation and the ravages of a fiat currency, are an awful thing. People have unfortunately gotten used to their savings not holding onto its value throughout the decades, and today cannot imagine the blessings of a solid gold-backed currency.

I so wish they did a prequel to Downton Abbey from the Edwardian era when Robert was a young man looking for a wife and Lady Violet was the reigning Countess Grantham. I wonder if the Levinsons came to Europe and took part in the London season, or if Robert sent to America by his parents to find a wealthy wife. I hope they find some formidable ladies to fill the roles of the younger Mrs Levinson and then Countess Violet Grantham. The first encounters must have been legendary! Not forgetting Carson's beginnings as a footman under a strict senior butler or Mrs. Hughes and Patmore's early years as house and kitchen maids. Or O´Brien as a young chambermaid - eek!

3:40 EXCUSE ME?!? He actually did what he accused Cora of doing and MUCH more with Jane! Cora enjoyed Bricker’s company; THAT’S IT. Robert wanted to enjoy something else and if I recall correctly “with every fiber” of his being. But he gets mad because another man cherishes and RESPECTS his wife when he wouldn’t? Why do men have cognitive dissonance when it comes to this kind of stuff? Yes I’m BIG mad and triggered. 😂 THEN HE BLEW HER MONEY!!!! Guhl I’m SUPER mad now!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The soup kitchen scene moves me so much ❤️❤️❤️. Cora doesn’t overreact first - she calmly gets facts and makes decisions. Mary must have gotten all her business sense from Cora; certainly not Robert. I just realized all the daughters are Jewish, through their mother, although they practice Christianity and no doubt were baptized into the Episcopal church.
@alberttsai8832
@alberttsai8832 2 жыл бұрын
No they’re not Jewish because Cora’s not a Jewish. Judaism is passed matrilineally (through your mother) and Cora’s mom, Mrs. Levinson, was not Jewish. In one of the S5 episodes Lord Sinderby asked if Cora’s mom converted when she married Cora’s dad and she said her mom didn’t. So neither of them are Jewish and neither are the Crawley girls.

6:37 This is yet another scene from Downton Abbey that is unrealistic and a little dishonest. In this era, the women would have been more sensitive to the scandal than Lord Grantham. Cora would have questioned Mrs. Crawley on why she involved them in such a scandal, knowing that Ethel had been engaged in prostitution. The women would have left immediately with their hats covering their faces. But of course, this scene was written for a modern audience, and Lord Grantham had to be degraded and humiliated. Men, bad. Women, empowered at the expense of men.
