The only person Tom cries in front of, the person Anna goes to in crisis, the only one to see Carson’s soft side, the one that found Thomas crying and heard his story and then again when he tried to take his own life, helped Ethel start again, comforted William when he was homesick. Heroine.

Tom loved Sybil with EVERYTHING he had. He loved her with his entire heart and soul. She loved him just as deeply. Children in orphanages would be sent to big houses to work and live. They probably ate better than at an orphanage, had a little bit of money, a bed, maybe sharing it. But there were the house keepers & cooks, who would make sure they went to bed on time, they couldn’t just go wander off, they usually had indoor plumbing which was a huge thing then. They had the other house staffs and butler as an extended family. The butler usually sat at the head of the table, was given great respect, he played the role of a dad. The cook & housekeeper were the mother role often. Although older women who were cooks & housekeepers were called ‘Mrs’ they were usually single, although as we saw on Downton sometimes they were married. Often in house relationships were banned! He knows the Crawley's accept him because he was Sybil's husband and Sybbi's Father, but I always thought it was really important to Tom that he's seen as a hard worker and not pitied by anyone. He was in a vulnerable place during that time, that's why Edna was able to take advantage of him. So glad Mrs. Hughes had his back then and again when Edna showed up to be Cora's maid!
