Criminally underrated and misunderstood series. Can't help wondering if it'd been shown on BBC2 instead of BBC1 it would've found a more appreciative audience. Thanks so much for posting; fantastic revisiting it.

The Royle Family started off on BBC 2, and moved to BBC 1 from their second series onward. So maybe you are right. BBC 2 suited it better.
@chrispaw12 жыл бұрын
Stop using the word underrated in the wrong context. Its a lazy mans misunderstanding of the English language and not knowing another word to use and nothing more. This is not an underrated or misunderstood series at all!
@richardenglish21952 жыл бұрын
@@chrispaw1 Underrated refers to something deserving of higher praise or recognition. Given the programme left viewers and critics baffled on its first broadcast, I'd say my original comment is pretty sound. Perhaps you'd like to explain why you think I'm so completely wide of the mark? Oh, and I'd steer clear of criticising other people's literacy skills when your own grasp of grammar is so atrocious.

Thank you for uploading this!!!! Malcolm!!! What’s wrong? Can’t stop thinking about me dad??? What’s brought that on??? Nearly killed me. Anyone notice that there is Royle family references in this episode 😂😂😂
@laurenloader61022 жыл бұрын
Yeah there’s definitely references to the Royle Family in these episodes, its brilliant. 😊
@YorkshireBusGuy2 жыл бұрын
I never noticed any specific references? Apart from they mentioned Jodrell Bank mention but not any direct references?
@laurenloader61022 жыл бұрын
@@YorkshireBusGuy Maybe more like similarities to the Royle Family then; like how Mrs Merton talks to Malcolm is how Denise talks to Dave in the Royle Family because even in that she talks to him as though he’s a child. That stands out for sure. Also the silences in between, when there’s no dialogue, that say so much is yet another example. It’s as though the Mrs Merton series was the birth of the Royle Family. And thank god it was in my opinion coz I love both shows. I’m gutted she didn’t do anymore Mrs Merton series to be honest.

The one I chuckled at was when Mrs Merton & Arthur we’re talking about Betty Spooner dying & Mrs Merton said “she was only 76 you know she had her whole life ahead of her” that’s exactly was nana said in the Royle family when her friend/neighbour Elsie died “ she were only 88 you know, she had her whole life ahead of her”

@@angelwithadirtyface3 yes you will find that with the same writers in different shows they use the same material.

Thanks for uploading, just watched all 6, back to back! Loved this when it was first aired, I'd have been 14 or 15. shame they let the british press put them off doing more, there was an xmas special planned too, but they abandoned it...i bet that would have been a hoot!

Absolute GENIUS this series, beautifully observed, perfectly timed, dark in parts yes but hilarious. Totally underappreciated by moronic critics who couldn't recognise its quiet brilliance.

Reminds me of when my dad died in 1992, his clothes were handed out to relatives. The next time saw my Uncle Bill he was dressed from head to foot in my dad’s clothes and footwear. They were very alike in looks so I found it quite unnerving but waste not want not I suppose.

The first ep of this series was slow as anything but they picked up the pace for the rest of the series, shame the response was so poor they didnt go any further, a planned xmas ep was completely abandoned because of critical response but carol and craig really captured the inanity of small town northern english life perfectly both in this and the royle family.

To be fair, Steve had already done 2 full series of Knowing Me Knowing You and also a series of I'm Alan Partridge 2 years before this so he was definitely known by this point lol.

Coogan has been around and on TV since the late 80s mate.
@bhoops135 ай бұрын
Coogan was already a massive comedy star since '92. This was actually quite a 'small' job for him to take on, given how big he was especially with Partridge since years already - it's because he's very good mates with Cash & Aherne, and loved their comedy.
