This scene is proof why Anne Meara was such an unforgettable actress. Rest in Peace!

Ironically she outlasted a lot of the kids who thought they were so talented. Paul McCrane, who played Montgomery, is one of the few still working. And Laura Dean, who played Lisa, the dropout, ended up on FRIENDS.

She's terrific here.. stark and menacing.. Plus, I have a personal fondness for she and Jerry Stiller. My father was in a show off Broadway many years ago, and they made a special effort to go backstage afterwards to praise him.

@@joel8583 "Ghetto Blaster" was the street slang for the radio he was holding. But the way she said it was very condescending. I did go to the current "Fame" school & had to deal with a prejudice art teacher a lot like Mrs Sherwood but worse. Same hair color & everything ugh

The way she said it seemed racist. I know it was "of the time", but there was quite a bit of racism, Hilary calling Coco "black cherry," and dear in a condescending way, & talking about Leroy's "black ass", the Asian student with the glasses on was credited as "Oriental Student, " the way Ralph didn't use his Hispanic name except to be part of a "quota", Hispanic people also experienced terrible racism in reality. And the homophobic F word Ralph called Montgomery. I know that NYC, I'm a native NY'er was dark and gritty for real at this time, 1980, but still, it left me wondering, "who wrote this?" A lot of the dark and violent scenes , and nude scenes seem gratuitous to me. Am I the only one who thought this? The dance and singing scenes are ofc spectacular. Everything else seems old and dirty, the school, people's apartments. All of it. The lighting also.

Yes, she did. She could have said Boom Box or radio. The word and the tone of a white woman teacher saying ghetto blaster with that scowl and tone def seemed racist. Idk if it was on purpose to depict institutional racism, or what, but I'd you see the whole movie in the lens of modern times, there are a lot of OMG 😱moments and language. Hilary the blonde ballerina called Coco "black cherry" 😱

Do you think Gene Anthony Ray had the same attitude as Leroy? Is that the reason he got expelled from the real Fame school?
@calicokush
@calicokush 7 ай бұрын
one of the older actresses on the tv show took him in. If I recall, he didn't quite have Leroy's attitude but he shared similar stories, some of which got written into the show, he was far more sociable than the character he portrayed but lived very much in the present and didn't think too far ahead. A little manic, a little depressive, a little too trusting and sometimes volatile.. in her mind, he longed to be part of a family, to make those kind of connections but he also, had trouble with drugs and gradually becoming one of the oldest members of the show as others moved on. She summed it up as he was a talent young man, that of course knew he was talented but insecure on other levels, too trusting and didn't have many skills to cope either with his mental health, stress or some basic life skills. friends and colleagues were limited in the way they could help him as their support network akin to now where it's still difficult to get someone the professional help they may need without being related (or sometimes, even when being related) but he was the functioning type and easily slipped thru the cracks.

Sadly, there are too many kids in school these days with the same attitude as Leroy. Everything's about Tick-tock or Instagram or Facetime, etc. the good solid academics just get in the way of having a good time. Ghetto-blasters have gone the way of iPhones but the dynamics are still the same. Thanks to our "modern" society norms, we are getting generation after generation of idiots - - - I could "of" had more fries at lunch!

It 's weird because i watched the movie and the series later and Ms Sherwood wasn't played by the same actress as well as Doris.WHy did they replace them?Didn't they fit the roles?
@laminage
@laminage 7 жыл бұрын
Many of them didn't want to I presume. They had hoped that they could continue in Movies and the like. The Actress who played Miss Sherwood is Anne Meara (Wife of Jerry Stiller and Mother Of Ben Stiller). Also many of them got cheated big time bad out of Money, Royalties. Irene Cara (Coco) Lee Curerri (Bruno). If you can try to find a Documentary on Fame and you'll hear some hearbreaking stories on how so many of them didn't live forever.
