Going to try and summarise this video: Do not spend 15 mins just reading, you dont get any marks and you probably won't remember much info anyway, get straight into answering the Qs Q1: directly quote from the text, answers can be very short eg: 'The jungle was high', 'There was a dinosaur' would be fine Best not to infer - you could infer incorrectly Q2: if you don't know how to write about sentence forms, ignore that bullet point. Embed a quote, state the language device and explain what you can infer from it/effect on the reader (purpose of author). Example: The writer describes the dinosaur's legs as "oiled, resilient, striding", the use of the adjective 'oiled', which is also a metaphor to suggest its robotic like, ruthless movement which also conveys its strength. There will probably be a metaphor/simile, alliteration, personification, think back to SOAPAIMS etc Q3: paragraphs are a change in focus - use of diff. sentences convey diff. stuff Short sentences - dramatic impact 'It sees us!' - conveys danger of dinosaur, makes us wonder what this creature is Long paragraphs - show size, power, strength, complexity, detail etc of stuff Large paragraph describing dinosaur in this case shows the strength, power and how deadly the dinosaur is. There can be a change in how things are portrayed throughout the text - the dino is scary and terrifying at first, but is given more human like qualities eg 'jeweller's hands' Write about impact of both beginning and end Q4: it is better to agree and disagree as it shows evaluation, you can mostly agree and only slightly disagree or the other way round. Can write about any part of the statement: 'Eckels was right to panic' - was he panicking? Should he have panicked or should he have thought rationally? Considering the strength of the dinosaur, was what he did normal etc Highly recommend to watch more videos on Q4 as it is worth 20 marks

yo any suggestions on how to go from a 6 to a 9?
@stellfluff64093 жыл бұрын
@@manjulingam3970 hi, well this is what worked for me i wasn’t expecting to get a 9 but what I did was watch loads of videos of Mr Salles bc his advice is great and just to give me an idea how approach the different ways you answer the questions. In the actual exam time can obviously feel quite tight but what I did was: 1) go straight to Q1 and answer that 2) go straight to the language Q2 on the question paper as it gives you the part of the text you’re answering about (I didn’t bother reading the whole source before I started as it wastes time) and use multiple interpretations of what the language implies (2 paragraphs) 3) read the whole of the extract for the summary comment on key points on structure and what you learn and give multiple interpretations and what the writer is trying to achieve (2 paragraphs) 4) I agree with the statement as I find it easier. The structure I used for paragraphs was point, method, explain (what is suggested with multiple interpretations), zoom in (use terminology), link/evaluate (what mood it creates or what the reader will think and link it to the statement) 5) I left l half the time for the creative writing and I always do descriptions because I find them easier. If you do Include varied sentence lengths, punctuation (:/;/-) and kites of techniques (simile, metaphor, personification) and to finish it I was running out of time so used the same first line to give a circular structure and try to use more complex vocab I wrote 1 1/2 pages (quality not quantity I feel is key) and I got 35/40 on section B. I didn’t do any past papers but I think it is a gd idea to to get used to answering the questions but deffo watch lots of Mr Salles’ videos they’re a life saver hope that helps

@Faithjohnson34672 жыл бұрын
How did you do that ? I’ve been stuck at a grace 3 and my exams are in 2 weeks ? Is there any hope
@Emily-fd7vv2 жыл бұрын
@@Faithjohnson3467 Don’t panic! I went from a grade 3 to an 8 in less than that amount of time, this is basically what I did for each question, you can copy this or get tips from it: 1) Question 1 should be easy all you have to do is state 4 things that have basically already been said in the text, just don’t try and make your own inferences as they could be wrong. 2) For question 2 (language), All I did was make flashcards of loads of different language devices with their definition on the back, It helps to include an example of the language device aswell. I copied the devices on mreverythingenglish’s youtube video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/r56vaWuvqc2Gl9E Basically memorise these flashcards and when you get to the exam write all the language devices that u can remember on top of the page and then read through the extract and highlight ANY and ALL examples that u can see. You should be able to analyse at least two of these examples in depth (2 paragraphs), i thought i would struggle with this but when the exam came the ideas just came naturally. Just make sure you talk a LOT about a little, literally write down any idea that comes to your head even if it sounds a bit far fetched. Also zoom in on singular words in your quotations, like adjectives and mention what it could symbolise. For example: The writer describes the dinosaurs legs as "oiled, resilient, striding", the use of the adjective 'oiled', which is also a metaphor to suggest its robotic like, ruthless movements which also conveys its strength. Also focus heavily on the EFFECT the author is trying to give out and how this impacts the reader, ask yourself “Why might the reader have done this?”. Don’t just say “it makes the reader want to read on” talk about the readers feelings and thoughts. 3) For question 3 (structure), I followed the same tips for question 2. However instead of making flashcards for language make some for structural devices. I copied mine from mreverythingenglish’s youtube video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXi3daCHiNJpldU Memorise, write down, highlight, make notes on any idea that pops into your brain when in the exam. Expand off of your highlighted words and then turn them into paragraph form. To be fair though, when i did it i didn’t follow any sort of structure I just made sure to embed my quotes and explain. You can look up answer structures if it makes it easier for you. Like MEE sentences or PRTEZEL (Point, Reference, Technique, Explain Effect, Zoom in, Explain Effect, Link) paragraph structures. PRTEZEL structure can be used for questions 2-4, it can also be used for literature aswell. 4) Question 4 (agree or disagree) this is like Q2 and 3 combined. I find its always better to mostly agree with the statement and partially disagree as it is easy to show the examiner that you are evaluating. Underline key words in the question and write it at the top of your source paper so you can easily refer to it when highlighting things in the source that show evidence of agreement and disagreement toward the statement. This also stops you from looking back and forth and makes the objective of the question easier to remember- You don’t want to start talking about something that is not relevant to the question as this wont get you any extra marks. It is good to start with an introduction as this makes it clear to the examiner what your gonna be arguing for example, “I strongly agree with this statement that… HOWEVER some parts of the source lead to me slightly disagree.” and then write your agreement and disagreement paragraphs stating why you agree and what language and structural devices lead you to agree. The same with disagreement. Also focus on EMOTIVE LANGUAGE, this is a good one to mention. 5) Question 5 (story or description) Now personally, I find it easier to write a descriptive piece rather than a story however it depends on what you find gets you the most marks and what you find is your strongest suit. First off make sure to plan your answer beforehand, make like a spider diagram off of the picture or make a plan of the story structure like the Mountain structure: 1. Beginning 2. Build up 3. Problem 4. Resolution 5. Ending - this gets you set on the idea your writing about. For description I highly recommend memorising a really high level piece of description and then when you get to the exam you can change a couple of words in it to fit the picture. This saves time as you wont have to rack your brain trying to think of good descriptions. I recommend Mr Salles’ video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4HMm5WmgNl1jbs NO CLICHÉS- Try to avoid common phrases you hear in everyday life. Example: 'baby blue sky' instead use 'sky that mirrored the cerulean of the sea below'. If you’re really struggling try and look back at the source and steal some ideas from their (obviously modify them a bit) like what language they have used and how they have structured it. Also write down : ; - () at the top of the page and make sure to include them, even if you think you don’t know how to use them you’ll still increase your chance of getting marks for having a range of punctuation. No comma splicing. Use extended metaphors (I find these come naturally once you get into the flow of writing) and remember Quality over Quantity. 6) TIMINGS make sure you leave enough time for each question (Dont skip any!) I recommend: • Q1) 4 marks = spend around 6 minutes or less on it • Q2) 8 marks = spend around 12 minutes • Q3) 8 marks = spend around 12 minutes • Q4) 20 marks this is worth all the previous questions combines so don’t spend most of your time on a question thats only worth 8 marks. If you’re really struggling move on, you can always come back to certain questions if you think you’re finished. = max 25 mins. • Q5) 40 marks- 24 structural marks and 16 SPAG marks. This question is worth half of the paper so if you find yourself getting burnt out by the time you get to it i would recommend doing question 1 first, maybe question 2 aswell and going straight to question 5, however if creativity is something you struggle at focus on doing the other half of the paper first. Just don’t skip it. = 40< mins with 5 minutes to plan. I know this was a lot but just remember: Flashcards, watch mr salles, mr bruff and mreverythingenglish and work hard and im 100% sure you’ll pass if you use these tips, i believe in you!!

Thanks a lot, sir!! For anyone too lazy to search for the videos that were mentioned I memorized the descriptions of the weather, here they are! The sun dripped warmth like hot wax, both soothing and smarting the people below. The land glowed with light, the heat so strong it dazzled. The horizon rippled like a bronze shield beaten by a hammer as though some Greek God had been reborn to hurl shafts of glorious light on the grateful crowds below. The sky showed off its artist's trickery: Cobalt blue depths, azure outlines to the few white clouds, a sapphire halo around the sun. Beneath, a watcher might close their eyes and see the sea, stretched out in lazy ripples, in a reflection of the perfect sky. -OTHER PIECE- The winds flexed their muscles in the East, whipping the clouds into shape, marching them across the sky. The black jackboots of the sky tramped across the horizon, stamping cold onto the world beneath, as though some long-dead tyrant had returned, armed with winters fury. The sky put on its black cape: the closest clouds armored in battleship grey; those coming behind streaked with the black of the coal smoke; those on the horizon dark as slate. Beneath, a watcher might shut their eyes and pray for liberation dreaming of the cavalry of sunlight. Good luck for tomorrow guys!

Hi, Mr Salles ; I love your amazing videos. Can I send you a 6 mark question that I did for English Language and have some quick feedback please? Thanks. This was from an OCR paper that I did. The writer uses the transitive verb and animalistic imagery ‘jumped’ to illustrate the prodigious level of excitement and happiness that Dahl felt after seeing the island of Dar Es Salam. This verb ‘jumped’ is homogenous to a kangaroo jumping and since this is an exotic and beautiful creature, as it is very rare because they can only be found in certain regions of the world, this reflects the ‘breath-takingly beautiful’ natural world which is something that Dahl finds unique and rare, something that he’s never seen before. Moreover, this idea of Dahl being full of energy and happiness is similar to how children act on Christmas morning, so this reflects his happy and excited nature, as he can’t wait to see the island as children cannot wait to open their presents; this implies his child-like nature. This is re-enforced by the phrase ‘vast rippling blue-black lagoon’; the verb ‘rippling’ is similar to bubbles and effervescence being rapidly produced, so denotes the magnitude to Dahl’s excitement about the natural world. It seems that he cannot keep his content emotions within him, so he might ‘explode’ and outburst like ‘ripples in the lagoon’. The phrase ‘immensely tall trees’ connotes how Dahl loves the natural world to such an extent that he begins to view the surroundings as something holy or great like God. The adjective ‘tall’ suggests the power and might of the natural world, emphasising how much he loves it that he begins to love it to the extent of God. Through the course of this linear text, the writer uses the left branching and complex sentence ‘there were pale-yellow sandy beaches, almost white, and breakers were running up on to the sand, and coconut palms with their little green leafy hats were growing on the beaches’. This connotes how Dahl’s emotions are overriding him and how his excitement has led to him telling the reader everything that he saw in the ‘beautiful’ natural world. It seems as if this is a dream through this syndetic sentence, highlighting his excitement for the natural world, as he’s like an excited young child telling the reader everything he sees on the island. Additionally, there is a shift in focus and perspective from the retrospective to first person; ‘there were casuarina trees’ to ‘I …with the rhinos and lions’. This shift in perspective suggests how Dahl feels so happy about the natural world retrospectively, so he yearned to return there, hence the reason he imagined himself being there again through the use of the first person. Also, the short and abrupt sentence ‘with rhinos and lions’ implies how Dahl is suddenly stricken with emotions and excitement, and how the ‘beautiful’ island of Dar es Salam was too great to be expressed into words. The passage is structured through contrast and juxtaposition between ‘breathtakingly beautiful’ to ‘full of shadows’ and ’teeming’ with ‘vicious beasts’; this suggests how Dahl perceives the island as being something mysterious and foreign, as well as how he may be a vulnerable target to ‘vicious beasts’; this evokes sympathy and fear from the reader, and we feel scared on the writer’s behalf.

I did my paper 1 today. I have geography and english literature to do in the next three weeks. I feel I messed up big time in this exam. I am aiming for a grade 7 or higher (got a 6 before and wasn’t happy). I have revised soooo much like 3-5 hours a day for 5 weeks. Question 1,2,3 were all ok for me but I ran out of time for question 4,5. I had to write smaller answers and didn’t feel confident. Question 4 was alright but 5 oh my days I can not describe for the life of me. I can not think of words and I am not creative. It has really got to me and has made me wonder whether any of the retakes are worth it.
@ljjames53304 жыл бұрын
Did anyone else struggle with 4,5 and do you remember any answers to compare? I did the Rosie paper
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish4 жыл бұрын
For paper 2, consider doing question 5 and 4 before the other questions. That is the vast majority of your marks, so if you are running out time, you will lose fewer. That said, stick to your timings as it is easier to get marks at the beginning of a question than at the end.

@MrSallesTeachesEnglish3 жыл бұрын
Yes, focus on writing about a quotation from the beginning, middle and end. Start with the end. So, if you have more time, you can add in further points out of sequence and it won't sound weird.
