I gather that they like to be hidden while nesting. Maybe enclose the shaded area or move them closer to the corner and plant taller bushes outside. Hope this is helpful. This is from the Louisville Zoo website. Nests are solid, compact, and built of dead stems, sticks, and leaves. They are low to the ground, usually about 12-50 feet from ground level. They prefer areas with tall hedges and thickets to woodlands.
@smokeyangelav6 ай бұрын
If you go back and watch the videos in their history, you'll find out why that location was chosen. They actually spoke to a keeper after they weren't laying in the sheltered location and this is what was decided. It worked and they started laying.

From all I've heard and read, VC pigeons often have a hard time figuring out parenting. Sometimes it takes several years for them to successfully hatch an egg and then a couple of years after that to actually raise a chick to maturity. I'm kind of surprised the egg developed as far as it did. I guess what I'm trying to say is ya'll are doing just fine. Don't get discouraged. They will figure it out.
@sandrah27586 ай бұрын
Look at you go girl. Cuttin’ it up. Bummer about the egg. Maybe they are still learning about being parents. Maybe they kicked the egg out knowing it wasn’t gonna make it? Have a blessed day. Glad you are feeling better!❤️🤍💙❣️🤍💙

@victoriabaker44006 ай бұрын
SHADE CLOTH: so glad you're already on this, was going to suggest. In the wild, they'd have tree foliage overhead. So I'm excited and I think you're really getting this dialed in. If it were me, I think I'd consider removing that other hardware cloth sling, since it's clear that isn't safe. That would leave them 2 choices of solid nest spots. Anyway, great job on this, great video. I agree with you that it appears the chick stopped developing before the egg rolled out. It would have been much farther along if that was when it failed. You got this! Thank you for bringing us along.
@jgg73776 ай бұрын
I agree! I would also get rid of any crossing branches so they don’t have any other areas to try and build on. My thoughts are they knew that the egg wasn’t viable and kicked it out of the nest. But why did they continue to sit after you picked it up and put it back in? Hummm. I also think I would not have built the new nest box out in the open. They used the first platform before so I’m sure they would use it again ( which is the perfect spot. Just remove all the other area’s so they have to!
@victoriabaker44006 ай бұрын
@jgg7377 I don't think they should remove the new box, because they exhibited a clear preference to be out in the weather like they would in the wild. Giving them that choice is reasonable, because they chose not to lay an egg in the other box, at all.
