it's true about mentality, honestly most players just end up losing interest before they get into their mid 20s. personally as someone who is currently dying of old age (24) i feel like i only improved over time, and every time i felt like my skill was decaying was purely because i hadn't played the game as frequently as i did in the past. if i start playing again now i'm going to suck much more than i did when i was 17, but after like 6 days of consecutively playing i'm 100% going to be setting scores i couldn't do before

I started playing right around when I turned 20 and got good enough to compete in OWC back then. I stopped playing when my first kid was on the way in 2014, and started playing again in 2018 after he got a little bit older. Stopped playing again for a few years due to kid #2, and started playing again in 2021. I'm better now at 31 years old than I was when I was in my early 20s and my skillset has expanded. My best plays are from very recent. I don't play competitive at all anymore, but I still give myself small personal challenges, a map or two at a time. Responsibilities play a huge roll in how much you play and how you approach a game like this. I still love Osu, but my life and life in general is much bigger than this now for me personally. I'd have to agree that for Osu, and most likely every other competitive video game, that circumstance of life does play a gigantic role in the "age" question. Cool video!

I'm 26, almost 27, ranking 33k~. I'd say age doesn't matter that much, I work a full-time job, after I come back home I spend a bit of my time at osu to relax myself and it's really fun. As long as you do something regularly, you'll get better. I don't care too much about improvement anymore, as I've been around the game since 2012, just want to have a good time, listen to good music, set some cool scores. I am of course getting better at the game, in the same rate I did when I was 16, but it's not something important to me anymore. It was, when I was younger though. It's the first difference I've noticed through the years that I don't care that much anymore, I don't feel nerves at all even when I'm into 2000 combo having an SS. It's just "yeah, cool" now. Perhaps I'll achieve something in the game in the long run, who knows. I think the biggest advantage you have when you are in your late 20's is your mental stability, how you approach things like failures and overall maturity that helps you approach the game in a different perspective compared to when you were 16. I also live on my own, so I don't have to worry too much about "parents" or stuff, that may somehow hurt your "osu career", if I can call it that way. As long as you have fun doing something, you are never too old or too young to do that. When I'll be 30, 40, if osu is still around and I'll feel fun - I'll keep playing. I'm still waiting for Lazer though...

Unless you can make a career out of gaming, you are just going to fall off at some point. i also came back to the game after a year break at age 21, and peaked in terms of skill before losing interest again.

However, I'll be honest that I had some major breaks in between, and most of the time - even though I of course played to improve generally - didn't bother to practice maps for pure improvement, but rather played maps I enjoyed (not going out of my comfort zone a lot). I agree with a lot of your points but honestly being young, learning any new skill will give you a significant short term advantage. That’s why your parents say if you want to learn a language do it when you’re young. To be fair I think an older player could become as good as a younger player, but through a lot more hard work and a lot more of a time investment. Using Kathy, as a singular example of an “older” player to prove that the older players can be as good as the younger ones is true but how many Karthy’s are there in proportion to younger players in the top 500? You could argue that osu! targets a younger demographic but still, I don’t think that significantly changes the fact that the older you get the longer it will take to learn a new skill. Either way I think the subject is too complex to really say what is factual and what isn’t, but this is just what I think about it xD

It seems like osu players get washed up only because the leaderboards favour pp farming. Which takes lots of time, and most people have less time the older they get. You can still be cracked out at the age of 40, but you just dont have enough time to farm the unforgiving for an fc everyday. Its just really about not having enough time to farm. I know a super washed up osu player that used to be able to fc 7* maps and ss 6* maps, and now is worse than some 7 digits. People generally fall out of having enough time or care to farm osu, and move on to actually important things in life. You wont be stuck in hell, there will one day come a time where you no longer hear _"see you next time"_
@ksweew74762 жыл бұрын
2:15 i don't think even formula 1 is a heavy reaction time sport... i've never been there myself ofc but im sim racing at an intermidiate lvl and what matters the most is your car control, track knowledge, anticipation, etc. If you're feeling a driver is seeing things way faster than you it's not because of his reflexes but because it takes him less time to adjust and read what's going on kinda like when you felt 4 or 5 stars maps were godlike speed when you could only pass 2 stars maps. And most professional drivers relate to this that you don't actually rely that much on reaction time or reflexes, because at a certain level it's impossible to react fast enough to do just about anything, if a car in front of you is heavy braking if you're relying on your reflexes to hit the brakes when he does you're going to crash and that just at a speed of 100km/h
@ksweew74762 жыл бұрын
I think people overexaggerate any kind of advantage a certain condition can give like genetics, material, age, etc thing is for you to know if those things were relevant to you, you already need to be in the top 10 or 5% of that thing you're practicing. Because it's always personal and if you're not even in the top 50% and you're already telling yourself your condition is too bad for that thing you're doing, you're already shooting yourself in the foot not even knowing if this really applies to you or not.

What people usually think of with "age" matters in a game like CS:GO where you're competing against younger and younger talent and they're gonna kill you if they can hit a shot in 5ms that you can hit in 6, and even then you can still be incredibly sucessful by not being braindead. "Age" doesn't matter in osu! cause if you fail a map you can just do it again whenever. Like sure if you're 70 years old with arthritis or you've got short term memory loss or whatever you aren't getting to the top any time soon, but as long as you've got enough dedication and can put in enough hours, there's not much stopping you. There's a reason I'm shit at CS now but better at osu! than I've ever been, and it's not because I'm 21 now instead of 18 like when I started.

If you wanna push your limits, watch your water intake and stuff, go to gym, do exercises, pay attention to your friends/family. Idk man, neuroplasticity is just busted at such a young age, especially if you have absurd fast twitch muscles/inherent talent, etc. No one actually thinks playing at a young age alone automatically makes you good, but *assuming all factors equal*, starting at a younger age is objectively better and always will be, and it's been shown time and time again. The whole "mentality" thing is just semi-pointless, misleading rhetoric that doesn't actually tackle what is a much more nuanced and interesting topic to talk about, so idk what the point of 90% of this vid was just to say "it's all in your head, bro." Like yeah, all players probably aren't pushing themselves enough and shouldn't be discouraged to play rhythm games at a late(r) age (e.g. Mina, the best 4k player at one point started in his 20's), but it just comes off as a bit misleading imo.

My thoughts exactly whenever there is a new debate in this community. Its always like "its 100% hard work and mindset" that comes as a counter to "its 100% talent", when in reality there is probably a bunch of factors that come into play. Yet people keep believing whatever is more convenient for them while quickly dismissing any evidence that would suggest otherwise. Really appreciate you for being one of the few relevant people to call out the BS!
@EtienneYT2 жыл бұрын
@@strikercloud3682 Yeah, people don't think of these topics as remotely multifaceted. They just argue from a strawman and the point of discussion becomes nullified. It's like when top players bring up genetics and think it's not a pivotal reason why they're one of the best in the world, like fuck off LMAO. Like yeah, you played a lot and were motivated, but you also were playing 7*'s out of the womb. Some people are just hyper-responders to muscle memory, it's not rocket science.
@transposedmatrix2 жыл бұрын
I mean, saying that if everyone’s circumstances are equal, younger players will objectively end up the better players is really just a truism too. I think the question is whether you can become good, even if you start later, and that’s probably possible, though not as easily, as if you started younger. Also, there might be a survivorship bias at hand. Instead of looking at the absolute amount of young players who’ve made it vs. older players who’ve made it, it’s going to be more representative to look at the relative amount of players that are actually "good" (= some arbitrary threshold) vs. their age group. I’m not disagreeing with you, it’s true that age is an advantage, but I wouldn’t call it a prerequisite for success before your body really starts to give in. But calling this topic more nuanced than Spazza made it out to be, and then reiterating basically everything he, and others, said before doesn’t really do the discussion a lot of justice…
@EtienneYT2 жыл бұрын
@@transposedmatrix I see what you're saying. I guess what I meant was that rather than tackling any of the previous factors mentioned, he just simply mentions them by name and almost dismissed them entirely by the end of the video with his mentality rhetoric. While what I was stating may be a truism, I genuinely think most people don't understand the *degree* starting at a much young(er) age helps compared to 10/15+ years older, which is where the discrepancy arises. I'd argue there's quite a few truisms that should be deemed as such, but the osu! community wouldn't view them that way unfortunately 😅 I'm not here to bring anything new to the table necessarily, but imo, Spazza virtually didn't hone in on any counterarguments at all for more than a few seconds lol, and the conclusion felt a bit preachy/unrealistic. The video also hyperfocuses on top players at the end, so I was under the assumption he was using them as a baseline for optimal skill. It would be fun to aggregate the top 1k players by age and see what the results are, but overall, it still wouldn't change my perception, personally, on age in anything muscle memory related given a majority of worldwide stars in other sports/instruments started at a super young age, and would be nowhere near as successful if they started like 10+ years later. Is the opposite possible? Of course! But downplaying the former is just unrealistic. I def agree with you overall though, I guess I'm still a bit confused on what the vid's *exact* goal was haha

something interesting I noticed is that not all games favor younger players, eg. a lot of shooters. I'd say it's because your real-life experience can overcome younger people's neuroplasticity in these cases. in osu!, there isn't much real-life experience to use in clicking circles, I guess the only thing you have at your advantage is knowledge of how people learn and how muscles are built.

Actually i've started playing when i was 13 but really got into the game for sure in the end of 2022 , i have only 826 plays in july 2022 & 1,125 june 2023 + this month , near to the 1k. Just to tell you that my play count is only 5k/6k and already at rank 24k in my country (pretty good imo cause i didn't rlly play too much & i only play w a mouse )

but 20s is still young tho, reaching 25 is typically considered "the prime of your life", you used nascar, theres a reason why a lot of nascar drivers retire when theyre around their 40s, mental capacity also plays a role when it comes to speed and dexterity, which age definitely impacts, more so the older you get

"osu! is dominated by zoomers" -Spazza, who is definitionally a zoomer
@absurddive2 жыл бұрын
Well, the thing is that you have very little time + too much things on your plate when you reach your mid 20s Work, studies, everyday life get in the way of even the things you love doing, so you don't have a lot of time to play. As a result, you stop focusing on improving and instead enjoy the game for real (a true "casual enjoyer") plus the fact that the body starts to kinda wear out when you reach your 30s if you don't take care of yourself You get pains you never got before, so you pay extra attention to avoid serious injuries Source: I'm 31, I miss being able to go zoomer mode orz

For sure, the mentality is different between adults and teenagers, but I doubt it's enough to explain the difference in improvement speed overall. At the end of the day, you can see the exact hours you spent on the game on your profile and compare to others, and I think most people start wondering why age matters when they notice that they didn't get enough improvement relatively to the time and effort invested, meaning no adult is going to raise eyebrows when the permazoomer playing 8hrs a day is progressing faster than they are at 1hr a day but they will start asking questions when they keep seeing profiles getting to their current level (which took 800hrs) in a mere 300.

I did manage to hit top 40k after 1.5 yrs of playing at age 27, but now my tapping hand may be irreparably damaged, so I would not call it a success story. Could a tendency for older players to injure themselves be a part of why we don't see quite as many?
