The clarity of this old movie is amazing....wish all these great old movies were well preserved as this one is - including the sound.

The Henry Squales character is a scream; especially, the courtroom scene, starting from eating the apple. What a tonally-rich mellifluous voice, he has.

Thanks for posting this. My wife and I just got through reading the novel and really enjoyed the film version (although it differs quite a bit from the book -- this has to happen with adaptations). The movie was just as droll and sweet as the book.

If I'd lost the prospect of a retirement cottage under such circumstances I would go ballistic! Those were the 'good old days' when a man could do such a thing without consulting his wife.

Interesting to see Percy starting out so soft and moral in the film. In the novel he's a deluded fantasist.

@Ludocrat I would have though AG used his character for further development in Brighton Rock?

Yes, it is obvious that Alec Guinness was familiar w Alastair Sim's refined con man here, but the former made his character much more grotesque, being a true criminal.

46:35 I was never so happy to see an irritating character killed off in a movie as this one.
