I think Ida Lupino and I have the same old moto: "Work like a Dog, think like a Man, and act like a lady." Jackie Kennedy did, too. Both accepted that it would be a "man's world" for a long time, but they were too smart to waste energy bellyaching about it. Ida opened her own studio, IdaLou, rather than succumb to being owned by the studios. (Imagine having to get permission to marry, and if you didn't, you were finished). Wilde was so young and handsome, a fine actor and by all accounts, a good person. He has 'good Eyes'. TY for posting this gem!

My 2nd time enjoying this film. The multi-talented and lovely Ida Lupino was deeply in love with her first husband and Actor Louis Hayward! They were a right match for each other, but WW2 happened and he joined the Marine Corps and came back with 'Battle Fatigue' or 'Shell Shock' as it was referred to back then. Thus, causing their divorce after she tried hard to save it.

I thought of the couple when I saw the name of her production company, IdaLou. Both were excellent actors in any part large or small. Probably not considered great film but in Duke Of West Point there is a touching scene between Sara Algod(sorry misspelled her name) such small body and facial gestures and soft gentle voices that make it a great scene. Imagine what a powerhouse couple they might have been.

When Monty Woolley belches at the beginning when he is in Santa's chair, and says "what did you expect madam; chimes" has its roots in a true story. Woolley was attending a dinner party one night and belched rather loudly. One woman was so appalled she glared at him and he glared back and said that line. The other guests were so amused that he insisted the line be written into his next movie, which is this one!

Some top acting credentials here. Monty Woolley was a professorial fixture at the Yale Drama School for many years. Ida Lupino's family had been actors going back to Renaissance Italy. Primarily known today as a respected director of feature films ("The Hitch-Hiker," "The Trouble With Angels" ) and TV ("Twilight Zone" "Gilligan's Island," and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents") Ida Lupino was also a highly rated actress, lending her sultry beauty and clear diction to parts ranging from a femme fatale ("They Drive By Night") to broad comedy ("PIllow to Post"). Though it was not generally known, she had had polio in her late teens, and though recovered entirely, the experience must have lent a special dimension to her role as a lame woman in "Life Begins At Eight Thirty."

Both Cornell Wilde and Ida Lupino appeard on I Love Lucy episodes. That was the first time I'd ever seen them. I had no idea they, along with other actors that appeared on I.L.Lucy were in movies. So glad I can now see them in their glory days playing dramatic parts. So impressed with Lupino being both a very talented actress but also a director. Good for her, breaking through the glass ceiling so early in motion picture history!

Be. Wise Ida and her husband, Howard Duff, appeared on a Lucy Desi Comedy Hour special, which was after the run of the original show. It was set at a lakeside cabin. There were several specials, all filmed at the studio: Fred McMurray hunting for uranium in Vegas, Red Skelton in Alaska, Fernando Lamas at a ski resort, Edie Adams and Ernie Kovacs (the finale). The saddest one was when they ran into Robert Cummings in Japan. Sad because Lucy had filed for divorce during the filming.

Good. I, too, like his professor character in "The Bishop's Wife" but for my money, "The Man Who Came to Dinner" is his best role. ONe of those movies that we can watch many, many times and enjoy it just as much as the first time. I think that must be because of the pacing--the rapid pace at which the story progresses. It's almost frantic, but that's part of the hilarity. Anyway, glad you've seen it.

Thank you for upload. Wonderfully acted High Class cast with serious acting credits and a very good story line. Alcoholism or addiction was not understood well medically & sadly people didn't know a addiction. What's the time you heard exactly what she says oh Maddy you know that's just Maddie. Sadly that's kind of the way people still are today. and unfortunately the medical community has convinced people that they have no ability to cure themselves. Well the first thing you have to do is make a choice that you will no longer be an addict whatever it is Etc. You don't say I'm going to,, you say I won't. Life is a series of choices. We all make choices every single day some of them are harder than others. Until you make that choice you will never get over whatever it is you're trying to overcome. you are the controller not it controlling you. and it can be anything not just alcohol drugs or food. The strive for perfection watching too much TV playing video games when you should be doing other things possibly because you don't want to be where you really need to be Etc. We have to look at our own life and decide what are we willing to be responsible for and, If you're not willing to be responsible don't mess up other people's lives by sticking around in theirs.. I don't mean committing suicide, and never solves anything, and causes more harm. I mean you move away so that you don't make people feel obligated to care for you or stand on your own two feet dig footholds and climb out of that hole inch by inch. I know what it takes, you don't need the answer why to start working on getting well. You just gotta believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel even if that end of the tunnel is 30 years down the road Remember Inch by inch Life's a cinch Yard-by-yard Life is hard Ukn

when i was a kid, i thought it was so great that she and Howard Duff were together. i thought it was a great match - they just seemed right together. when i was older, i thought the same for Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin. well, so much for the thoughts of kids - i guess i was a real romantic - and still am. i enjoy looking up actor's lives, too. Yule Brynner had a son - 'Rock' Yul Brynner, who became a writer and many other such things. people who are artists often have kids who stay in the business one way or another. :}
