73 year old lady here; and joined the hippies in San Francisco after High school graduation. Out of all the phenomenal bands I heard during the next few years, Led Zeppelin was my favorite; and I was blessed to see them in concert more than once. I even knew during that time that this band, their music would transcend way beyond my generation to be enjoyed by my children, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren… and beyond.

I just love seeing a youngster hear this song for the first time. As a child of the 60s and 70s I grew up with this song, which was voted year after year the best rock song of all time. It was so nice to see someone hear this song with new ears. At 60 years of age this song still moves me like it did the first time. Timeless classic!

The flute sound is a Mellotron - a keyboard that triggered loops of real, pre-recorded flutes on actual 1/4” tape inside the keyboard. The tapes spun for like 30 seconds and then rewound to the beginning to play the loop over again. Crazy but true.

The difficulty for a western audience is that this is one of (if not the) most played rock songs of all time and so it is difficult to have a new perspective on it. But it encapsulates everything that the composers wanted from it. Robert Plant recalls writing the lyrics and practically 'leaping out of the chair' when he saw what he'd put down - whilst Jimmy Page's solo remains one of his crowning achievements on the guitar.

@@bishlap did you ever see zeppelin live? Well I did, I also saw 3 reunions and page and plant. When they did rain song it brought the roof down. It sounded like a jet was landing in Madison square garden. You're crazy if you think it's a girl song. Most bands that split up over 40 years ago would have most of their songs over played on classic rock radio. They've sold 100 million records so I'll leave it at that. If you haven't seen zeppelin live you've been deprived and the rain song is a vibe, it's not zep 1 or 2 but it's still a great song. I'll take it anyway over all the shit that's come out in the past 40 years, there still isn't a better band than Zep and I've seen them all. I was a ticket broker for years,so not only did I see all the best rock and soul and Motown acts but I saw them in the first 10 rows. Including Sabbath, Van Halen, GNR and frank Sinatra. Nothing can touch 60s and 70s music. There is no comparison. It's based on taste and musical knowledge and I'm an authority. I've seen hundreds of shows over 4 decades. Today's music is garbage and the rain song is epic, you're dead wrong!

If I'm not mistaken, you should be right. Pay attention to what he says after that. He speaks of the new day dawning for those standing long (not following the piper) and the forest basically laughing at the ones that followed the piper to the slaughter. Plant was an amazing lyricist.

@@janelson41 And the amazing thing that he offers so many levels for imagination that, although, you and I agree, other people may find something else. And Plant may have meant something totally different. That's the magic of literature. Same with the Beatles. People wrote thousands of pages trying to interpret what they meant by this or that, and John, Paul, George, and Ringo just smirk as if to say: Good luck, you'll never guess. Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes! By all means listen again and again. This masterpiece is an introspective examination of the meaning of life and the anthem of my generation. John Paul Jones played bass and 3 recorders. John Bonham played drums Jimmy Paige, who wrote and produced, played a 12 string acoustic guitar and a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. The tempo increases twice. The solo is considered among the greatest ever and if it doesn’t move you to tears there’s something wrong with you. It should be noted, prominently, that this is a collaborative effort by 4 geniuses. Even more worthy of note in this day and age is that it was all done by hand. There were no beats or samples or computers back then. Every single note is an original creation of the mind of the artists and performed manually. Think about that for a minute. Then listen again. It will take many times to take in all the subtlety and nuance. THIS is real music.

Jimmy had composed Stairway for a few months...when it was time to record the band played through a few times with still no lyrics...Robert sat and scribbled on a pad for 45 min...they then recorded and wrapped it in 2 hours only...Jimmy said he played the solo 3 times and the just picked the best take...this masterpiece will live on long after we are all gone.

Greetings from Canada. What you thought were flutes were- in fact- three different recorders played by John Paul Jones (called Jonesy within the band). In the Live version (which you really should view: LIVE MSG, NYC, 1973) he recreates the sounds on a Mellotron (an earlyish synthesizer). Peace, love and bellbottoms. btw NOT your first Zep... you did "Since I've Been Loving You" six days ago.

JPJ also starts playing a Fender Rhodes keyboard when those 12 string electrics come in. "Stairway to Heaven" features what can easily be considered one of the top five guitar solos ever recorded. As for the meaning of the lyrics, bear with me a bit here as I'm going to ramble a bit. They could just be another Led Zeppelin interpolation of the J. R. R. Tolkien trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." The lady may represent the character of Galadriel (played by Cate Blanchett in the movies). The pastoral lines about songbirds, looking to the west and crying for leaving, the smoke through the trees and the forests echoing with laughter, the May Queen with a choice of paths to take, all speak to that to a degree. Another heady take on the song concerns the lines about the piper who will lead us to reason and is calling you to join him. The notion of the piper evokes the fable of the Pied Piper. And perhaps that is meant to reflect an aspect of the conflict between generations during the cultural upheaval of the 1960's that extended into the early 1970's when this song was released. But rather than serving as a commentary about the anxieties of the older generation worried that rock and roll would lure the youth away from their moral guidance, the notion of the piper summons the pan-pipes of ancient Greece and with them the nexus between music, poetry, and the love of wisdom i.e. philosophy. And that takes us to perhaps the greatest lyric in the song, "When all are one and one is all, To be a rock and not to roll" -- a line that reaches back 2,500 years to a fragment from the pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus: "It is wise to hearken, not to me, but to my Reason, and to confess that all things are one." (c. 500 BC) A variation of that expression survives to this day in the rallying cry, "All for one and one for all," meant as an expression of unity which provides a sense of grounding and identity -- standing strong together like a rock, steadfast and unmoving. But perhaps the line is better understood less as an anthem of solidarity and more in line with the existential understanding which people often glean when under the influence of psychedelic drugs -- that feeling of oneness with the universe and the sense of belonging that feeling confers. Bad trips not withstanding! PS. Major props for keying on the emotional journey taken by the guitar solo! My eyes tear up during that part sometimes too!

They are using a Recorder 🙂 The song was recorded and released more than 50 years ago. The band was one of the biggest rock groups in the world during the 70s along side the likes of the Rolling Stones. They toured around the world, not just the US. The did all that with skill and talent. That's why you were stunned hearing it for the first time.

I first head this song while in the army, taking a cab from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv on a Friday night in the dark. The Mercedes taxi was speeding down unlit back roads, as the song played on. It totally blew me away! Every time I hear it, I can see in my minds eye the experience of experiencing it this way, the wind rushing by the taxi in the pitch black night, me being a 20 y.o. soldier heading from my desert base to a short weekend at home.

It has been over half a century since I got to watch a pretty young lady listen to this song for the first time with headphones on. This 81 year old hippie is more than happy to see that there are still things from that era that are worth a Wow. BTW the mystery instruments at the beginning are recorders. When performing live, they used a special keyboard device to create that sound.

I was a teenager when this song came out, and I've heard it for almost 50 years. I've never thought the lyrics had much meaning beyond trying to set up mental imagery of mysticism, magic, nature, unicorns, elves, wind chimes, silky dresses blowing in the wind, etc. In other words, the same mental imagery Stevie Nicks tries to paint in songs like Rhiannon.

Great reaction. If you're going to do a dive into the world of LZ, I recommend starting with album 1, track 1 and just keep going. Almost every song they did will eventually be recommended because everything they did was so unique, a journey, so might as well start from the beginning and hear their progression. ;) I recommend studio versions first then live if you can find a decent video of a live performance of any particular song you like. I say that for a few reasons. There isn't much great footage of their early live performances, they didn't perform all of their songs live and they loved to improvise (never played the same song the same way twice), so studio and live and be somewhat different. Also, Page was a genius as producer and what one hears on a studio version often couldn't be replicated live. So you'll get the best of both worlds. Remember that when LZ was recording, there was no such thing as auto tune so what you hear on a studio version is just how they sounded. Again, great reaction and thanks! Enjoyed it. Rock on! I've subbed hoping to hear regular reactions to LZ. I like your style. :)

Somebody else in the comments recommended "In My time of Dying", (live at Earls Court 1975), dont be put off by the title, I'm sure you as a singer will love it. P.s, I would love to see some more Jinjer reactions, perhaps some of their earlier songs such as Cloud Factory , Outlander, Who is Gonna Be The One, etc, etc. Turn it up and strap in, Its wild stuff..
