In a world on the brink of nuclear annihilation, one man's courage becomes humanity's last hope. "That Time ONE Russian Soldier Saved the World" tells the harrowing tale of Vasili Arkhipov, a Soviet Naval commander whose decisive actions aboard a Russian submarine during the Cuban Missile Crisis averted global catastrophe. Amidst the panic of lost communication with Moscow and under the looming threat of war, Arkhipov stood firm against the unanimous decision of his fellow officers to launch a nuclear torpedo at US forces. His insistence on diplomacy over destruction preserved peace and prevented the mutual assured destruction that seemed inevitable. This gripping story underscores the importance of individual courage in the face of overwhelming pressure and the thin line between peace and global conflict. Join us as we dive deep into the tense moments underwater, where the fate of the world rested in the hands of an unlikely hero.
Interesting fact: Another interesting fact about Vasili Arkhipov, not covered in the script you sent, is his involvement in a severe incident aboard the Soviet submarine K-19 in 1961. This submarine, the first of its kind to be armed with nuclear weapons, faced a critical reactor coolant leak. The malfunction endangered not only the crew but also posed a risk of a nuclear meltdown. Arkhipov and the crew were exposed to high levels of radiation while improvising a secondary cooling system to prevent the meltdown. This exposure had long-term health effects, contributing to Arkhipov's death from kidney cancer in 1998. The K-19 earned the nickname "Hiroshima" due to the severe radiation exposure and its lasting impact on the crew.

Fun fact: vasili arkhipov was supposed to be off duty that day, but he decided to work. If he wasn't there, another commander would take his place and probably also agreed to launch the torpedo.

@@Almina-nh7nu It is a well-known truth, but American propaganda promoted this concept that only USSR put the missiles in Cuba just for the sake of it, since the other counterpart of the story remained classified for more than 40 years. I also remember this story of a soviet officer in a base who was the person to launch the ICBM's in retaliation. They suddenly had a signal of a US nuke being launched against them. The guys were mad nervous on what to do and some wanted the officer to shoot back and some weren't sure. He decided to remain at stand by and wait to see if it's a real missile or not. They tried to find out in any way possible but they couldn't figure it out and so when they waited until the missile hit its target they checked to see if they got nuked, but there was no such report and they discovered it was just a fake signal, caused maybe by a comet or something.
@MrCoolguy425
@MrCoolguy425 2 ай бұрын
I am assuming you’re talking about the 1983 false alarm incident. At the time the Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov monitored the Russian satellite early warning system which detected a lone ICBM launch from the U.S. Figuring it was a computer error (his thinking being that the U.S. would perform a first strike using hundreds of missiles and not a single missile) he didn’t send an alarm to his superiors. After confirming this since the “missile” never activated the land based radars throughout russia, he continued to ignore the further 4 missiles that were “detected” by the satellite systems. Later on they discovered the satellites were actually being fooled by sunlight reflecting off of high altitude clouds making the illusion of ICBM launches, this was later corrected by using geostationary satellites alongside the current satellites

This is all very exciting of course. but what interests me is that no one in the video ever mentioned the fact that the supply of nuclear missiles to Cuba was a retaliatory reaction on the part of the USSR. This happened gradually due to the US stationing its missiles in Turkey. Why are the entire Soviet crew, except Arkhipov, portrayed as some kind of stupid idiots? All these people are heroes and no one will ever understand what it’s like to sit at the bottom of the sea and think that now your country is at war, your loved ones may be dying, and you can’t do anything. All crew members are heroes, I think so. And all these people were among the best. Why is the video not talking about a complete blockade of Cuba, because of which even merchant ships could not arrive there? Why are they not talking about American attempts to overthrow the government in Cuba? Perhaps this is the ultimate difficulty of translation. But I didn't hear any of that in this video. Only that the USSR is such a terrible dumbass and only one Arkhipov is great. Although it is far from only him who saved us all

In terms of animation quality, yes. In terms of content, not at all. In the previous video clip about the Second World War, which was the main reason for the Soviet and German invasion of Poland, there was no mention of the Danzig Corridor, not a single mention of the Soviet-Polish war of 1920. Even in this video, there is not a single mention of the deployment of nuclear missiles in Turkey. From this we get a black-and-white morality. And then guess, either the author himself is just pretending to be a historian, but in fact does not understand anything, or the author is just a good propagandist.
