Great to see you're finally able to work on the Sambar👍 I was curious about when you did the valve adjustment and basically did it with the engine in only 2 positions. Is that specific to the clover 4 or is that a typical 4 cylinder engine procedure? The only valve adjustment I've done is on the 3 cylinder in my Hobio and set the engine to TDC and adjusted intake and exhaust for cylinder 1, then rotated the cam pulley 120 degrees for each of the other two cylinders(following the firing order) and adjusted intake and exhaust for each cylinder. I guess the thing that threw me off with the Sambar is the adjustments for cylinders 2 and 3 being partially done in conjunction with 1 and 4 with only 2 engine positions being used. Just curious if that is specific to that engine since I've never done a 4 cylinder.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 3 жыл бұрын
On the Subaru EJ boxer, N/A, SOHC, you have to turn the engine in 4 different positions to adjust all four cylinders. Guess the Clover 4 is just easier. I assume depending on firing order, other SOHC 4 cylinders could be similar.

Used Japanese vehicles are common in new Zealand and there used to be comments that the Japanese do not service their vehicles very often - perhaps never before getting a new vehicle. There is some regulation that requires major work needs to be done around 7 years which is often when the vehicle is shipped off shore - therefore not surprised at the engine sludge situation.

Looked a satisfying task. Just curious, is there a 'hot engine' setting for adjusting the valves as well? I know when I do my Ford Essex engine I prefer a cold engine, saves burning your fingers and by the time I get to the sixth cylinder it would have cooled enough to question whether it is still hot. Certainly a big difference between hot/cold engine valve settings on a Ford Essex engine.

The torque value for the jam nuts converts to 6.5 ft-lb for those who care. (or 8.8 Nm)
@cajunaggie9815
@cajunaggie9815 3 жыл бұрын
Torque is defined as force at a distance, therefore 0.9 kg-m * 2.28 ft per m * 2.2 lb per kg = 6.5 ft-lb To convert kg-m to N-m, multiply by 9.8
@SamCyanide
@SamCyanide Жыл бұрын
Is there a torque spec for the rocker bolts? Edit: 0.9 ±0.1kg/m aka 6.5ftlb Also in the manual it shows that it should be the first line of the four on the harmonic balancer, but you showed it to be in between two of them. I have the four lines and then a single line 180° away. I said it to the first line as the manual shows

Just noticed my sambar is leaking oil in the bottom right corner of the valve cover so I'll be replacing the gasket soon. I have never adjusted valves before, should I worry about adjusting them while I'm in there? Is there a sign that I should adjust the valves? Truck seems to run perfectly fine so I reckon not! It's a 94 Sambar with 58k kilometers
@jf4872
@jf4872 Жыл бұрын
You can really feel the adjustment better if your use your fingers to turn/loosen the adjuster screw vs using a screw driver. Then lock it down then re-check. Anyone ever consider installing swivel adjuster screws in these engines? Is there a service interval for valve lash on these engines? Don't see anything in the manual.

I've wanted to ask this for so long now, and I never brought myself to write out the comment - I see pretty much everyone uses a razor blade to clean out the mating surfaces before re-sealing engine parts together, and everyone points out how fragile the aluminum is and to be careful. Would a plastic scraper mitigate that risk and do the job as efficiently and more safely, or is there a specific reason I don't really see anyone using plastic instead of a razor blade? I was thinking of something along the lines of a flat-edged ice scraper for windows?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 3 жыл бұрын
Snap-on and others do now offer plastic scrapers for this reason, I just don't own one. A box of 100 razor blades from the hardware store lasts me years and years.

The torque is kilogram force - meters. The more correct term would be Newton - meter like you mentioned. It would be like us using units of pound force - yards. I had a Corolla in the 70's that I had to adjust the valves on. It seems like I had to rotate the crank to four positions. I like your approach better.
