I switched to that fluid on mine. Picked up a mpg or so, as well as much faster shifting. One gripe I have always had; the manual claims 5-6 quarts for a drain+fill, every 4eat i have done a simple drain+fill on took almost exactly 7.5 quarts.

It is always a good idea to put a wire brush or soft brush to all bolts and fittings you intend to undo, before you work on underneath of a vehicle. It helps to get sockets on bolts nicely and stops dirt etc from falling on your face and eyes. Also clear safety goggles are great.

I have fixed cvts on newer Subarus and they are still driving great for years. But just got my very first 2001 forester with 4eat... Trying to remove oil pan on the transmission and one bolt is inaccessible because it is blocked by the catalytic converter. Bolts on cat are jammed....oops. On the other hand , your outback seems to have all the room to remove the 10mil bolts on the pan. 👌👌

My father is a 40 year retired diesel mechanic. He always taught me that when using silicone gasket sealer to snug it up the bolts for the pan but not tight at first. let it sit overnight to cure then torque. This will create a small squeeze like you would get with an o-ring ensuring a better seal. The only reason not to do this would be time constraints like a shop, but if you're already waiting 24 hrs for the silicone to cure you might want to try it and see what you think. Ever since I started doing this, I've never had a even a drop leak.

Getting the pan off is a devil of a job because the factory RTF silicon seal really glues it on. I found a "seal separator" tool to be the answer. Lysle No.50210 to be the only way to do it in tight spaces. It is an angle blade with a hammer body. There is not enough clearance for straight tools and a risk of damaging the sealing surface by getting too rough out of frustration.

Hello, I'm having this puzzling issue that I don't understand; for the last couple of years my Subaru forester 2010 SH automatic has given a really rough jerk while coasting at 80+ km/h, typically ABS and ESP lighting up, cruises control disabled. The lights turn off after I restart the engine. This has happened so infrequently that it's been impossible to anticipate and difficult to diagnose. My local Subaru shop thought it might have something to do with the temperature gauge, but after inspection found that it was fine. Yesterday I had three rough jerks in a 15-minute drive. It's quite uncomfortable, and I'm pretty fresh out of ideas. Any tips would be most welcome!

I had a leak in the AT cooling line of my 2005 Outback, went to Advance Auto stating make/model/year and the clerk sold me 3 qts. of IDEMITSU Type J. Before getting the line repaired I bought another qt. Now that I have it fixed I looked up capacities and discovered Subaru spec fluid is: Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid, IDEMITSU ATF HP, Castrol Transmax J, Pennzoil ATF-J or Dexron III. So the fluid is probably now about 1/3 IDEMITSU Type J, which is for Nissan/Infiniti, not Subaru. I talked to a tech guy at Idemitsu and he said their Type J will damage the Subaru transmission. Do you have any informed insights into whether I need to get the Type J completely out of the tranny, whether the standard drain plug drain would be good enough, or if in its diluted amount it is OK as is ??? I'm looking for a newer Outback and would prefer not to spend money on the 2005 if I can avoid it, but want to keep it working well.

I have a 2006 Forester. I was just looking at the Amsoil website. They offer ATF oil and the external filter. Now I have to decide if I want to buy the OE series or the more expensive Signature series. I have used Amsoil products in many other vehicles for the past 15 years. I signed up for the Preferred Customer which gives you free shipping. I like that they generally offer 3 levels of protection with their oils. Signature Series is the highest and most expensive. Depending on my vehicle use is how I determine if I use OE, XL, or Signature. Mostly I use the XL series. On the website you can select Look up a Vehicle and it will show available products and amounts. Very helpful. Yes, they are not cheap products but I like that they are a company based out of Wisconsin.

I have a 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback. I bought the "filter" and gasket kit, thinking I'd go in and change the fluid and the screen/filter in the pan. I got the pan off and the filter only has 4 bolts holding it on, not 8 or whatever is in every video, and there's a transmission line in the way so you can't remove it. Should I just leave the old screen/filter and forget replacing it? Also the kit came with a rubber gasket that says in the instructions not to use any sealant or adhesives. Every video shows people using RTV or something on the gasket. Sealant or no?
@badcrcz Жыл бұрын
I figured it out. There's 2 small bolts holding on that tube blocking the filter. Once you get the bolts out you can pull the tube. As a reward your arm gets covered in another quart or two of fluid. Still not sure on the sealant for the new gasket, so I think I'm going to use a thin coating on each side of the rubber gasket. I have red RTV that says it works on oil pans, and there was red RTV on the pan when I removed it.
@badcrcz Жыл бұрын
Well I put a thin coat of red RTV then read how certain ATF can break down RTV unless it's the specific kind that states it's made for transmission pans. Looks like I'll have to remove the pan again and scrape all the RTV off again and install a new gasket.

kevin norman if you can feel it change like almost thump into gear, when cold they can tend to bang a bit but once warm it should change effortlessly. I wold get a service done on it, a fluid flush and have the heat exchanger flow tested as these are the first things to clog with crud and impede flow, causing poor clutch pressures. I had a Nissan patrol that for nearly 6 months never saw overdrive even on the highway as the heat exchanger was too clogged. If that doesn’t solve it I would start looking deeper into the tram Addison control and/or wear on components. I would also check that all your tyres have the same tread depth and pattern as this may cause what seem to be transmission issues.

I was snugging the bolts, and when I got to the back of the pan, a few drops of ATF got between the mating surfaces. I pushed on, torqued all the bolts to spec, and now am letting it cure for 24 hours. Would those few drops of ATF be an issue that the gasket wouldn't seal properly? Thanks!

You work at Subaru too? Sick. my trans pan has been leaking for a bit but I haven’t been able to find a gasket or the time to do it.

I heard this gets out only about half of the fluid, there is a lot of chambers in a Transmission. a dealership would flush the whole system. would it make sense do do the above, then a few weeks later, drain and fill again? just a way to get maybe 75% new fluid

You get about one third of the fluid out with draining the pan. I do three drain refills spaced out between oil changes.

MrSubaru I am very impressed by your videos and am glad I found your channel. One more question about this procedure: I have a 05 Outback so is it OK to put Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid in along with the Lucas no slip. Sometimes I think I detect a slight slip when automatic transmission goes from 1rst to 2nd.

I usually only recommend the Dexron version of the Max Life due to Dexron being what Subaru recommends.

is the Idemitsu fluid unnecessary here?

I cannot get my damn pan off it’s the original red gasket maker and it’s so tight I can’t get it to separate and don’t want to damage the pan

Great video! Quick question; what's the best way to top up ATF (not refill)? I've noticed a slow ATF leak by my torque converter, so it's not a refill but just to top up what has leaked so far. Is it best to have the engine running or top up when the engine and gearbox are cold/not running?

Pour it into the dipstick tube with a funnel.
